View Full Version : DOR/DOR2 is awesome

A week or so ago we were talking in the SvR thread and DOR2 came up. I popped it in and have been playing it quite a bit lately. Never really played much DOR2 for some reason, I was a bigger fan of DOR1 back then. I think it was because I didn't feel like doing a CAW to unlock everything. Going to do that now, though.

It's probably the best wrestling engine I've ever played. It's pretty much the evolution of the No Mercy gameplay.

My favorite mechanic is easily being able to break up any move with pretty much any move. They completely got rid of that invisible barrier that's usually there and brings a whole new dimension to the game. For example, I hit a SCM on Cena while he had someone in a camel clutch and he sold it. I also love to hit an RKO and have the guy land on someone downed.

I would love it if they ported this engine to a modern console, gave it some shiny HD graphics (the graphics are amazing as-is, though, especially for Gamecube), update the roster and add more match types.

Discuss.

I prefer King of Colosseum and Firepro, but DOR is without a doubt my third choice.

The Wrestle Kingdom games in Japan also use the DOR engine btw.

I did like DOR 2. If they'd done a third game, I think they'd have really nailed it.

Didn't know Wrestle Kingdom used it.

Never played KOC, and Firepro is an awesome, awesome game but once you get the timing down you dominate with ease. I play on 10 with hardly any problems.

I'd put Fire Pro second, though.

DOR2 is a jewel of it's generation. Absurd they never attempted to evolve the engine toward the next generation. What really gets me is the lack of an attempt, like "Oh well the critics like it but let's make that Smackdown series multiplatform. They won't notice."

Does the 360 version of Wrestle Kingdom use the DOR engine? Because it looks amazing. Exactly what I'd expect from an updated DOR.

Back to DOR, this is the kind of stuff I'm talking about:

The table system wasn't PERFECT, but being able to do pretty much anything through a table is awesome.

Fatal 4-way last man standing matches are amazing. My CAW has a Sheamus style bicycle kick running special. Took out Christian right as he turned around for the unprettier, Fisherman DDT'd The Rock and finally took out Edge with the Breakdown. All within a minute.

Even if it doesn't play like DoR, that animation is ridiculous smooth compared to SD V Raw.

Yeah.

Also, the point of Firepro and KOC isn't necessarily to win. It's more about "working" a good match. That's why the GBA Firepros and KOC rated your match after it was over. It's actually a huge part of the main game modes, and I'm pretty pissed they took it out of FPR.

My and Inadequacy used to play the shit out of it, loved the customization and entrances.

Oh and the fact you could break up submissions was great.

Yeah, I kind of get that. I love working matches in FPR (and other games), but sometimes I like to be challenged, and that's where FPR gets knocked down a notch.

Will definitely agree with you there, as I can dominate on level 10 if I wanted to.

Although for a challenge, you can always try and beat a super legend like Baba or Tsuruta with an indy guy.

Or any wrestler against any MMA guy. Swear I'm probably 4-50 against guys like Sapp, Cro Cop, and Sakuraba.

I remember a couple of epic three man Hell in the Cell kmatches

I loved the specific body damage meter that worked very well during a match where it showed exactly where the person was hurt and how close they would be to submitting or TKO in a match if you put a finisher or submission on them. Also loved the mini-game dealing with choices of submission, resting, or countering. I believe DOR 2 is also the only game to include Muhammed Hassan.

Only thing I really hated the most was if the CPU or someone else kept hitting you on the ground, the amount of pressing the A button got ridiculous (might reset the amount needed after every hit) and how quickly it was to lose enough fatigue to tire out a wrestler in DOR 2.

There was an svr game with Hassan. I think it was '06

You are correct according to the Smackdown wiki : http://smackdown.neoseeker.com/wiki/Muhammad_Hassan

I used to be more of a Nintendo system wrestling fan before THQ decided to get rid of the console exclusive wrestling games in favor of Smackdown vs Raw series and stopped buying wrestling games after DOR 2 so I'm limited in knowledge of that series.

Oh, this game. Me and my friends of so many years talk about this game on end. The times we had with it were all good. One of my friends was Stone Cold and the Stunner was such a bitch move.

You hit one guy and if anyone else is around, they feel the recoil of it. Like one time CPU Flair was coming into the ring, me as Take took a Stunner and my head smacked Flair, throwing him out and KOing him. And my friend ended up winning, like usual. And everytime someone had their special and all that, you would have to run like you were a ghost running away from Pellet-crazy Pacman.

Good times, they definitely need a new DOR or DOR-style game. God, I hate SvR.

I loved having Fatal Four Way Hell In A Cell matches with my created guys

I use to own the first DOR and I really enjoyed it, its a shame that I sold it. I borrowed the second one from a friend years ago and it was great as well.
