View Full Version : Your thoughts on the Ultimate Warrior

I was wondering what TPWW's overall thoughts on this guy are. I probably shouldn't expect this to be taken seriously, but I'm still curious to hear peoples "reviews" about him as a performer

When I was a kid I was a huge Warrior fan. While everybody else was a hulkamaniac, I was a warrior...When he did his run in WCW I was so stoked...then I grew up. After watching The Destruction of the Ultimate Warrior I realized how much he really sucked as a professional wrestler. He had a bad ass look, bad ass music, and a bad ass ring entrance. When I was younger that's about all it took. But now being older and actually listening to his rambling all I can say is WTF? He wasn't the best in the ring either, but I think WWE went overboard on the DVD about how horrible he was in the ring.

I'm all about the Warrior being put into the HOF. But for the love of God when he makes his acceptance speech it needs to be Out Of Character!

I was a huge Warrior mark as a kid. Probably a bigger mark for him than for Hogan.

Even at WMXII, I remember marking out big time for his return.

By the time he got to WCW though... not so much.

As a very small child I loved him. His character made more sense to me than Hogan's. I mean he had Spirits and whatnots on his side. Hulk was just taking Vitamins. I saw no reason for Warrior ever to lose. His whole character was very cartoonish and I think that's another reason why I enjoyed watching. Plus I hated Hogan to no end and would cheer for any who faced him.

What ended my love for Warrior can simple be put down as PERFECTION. Who would've ever thought a 4-5 year old could realize and understand true in ring skill.

as a kid, liked him better than Hogan.

Nowadays, I realized that they both sucked.....

I grew up on The Undertaker but I remember my friend and I doing prematch interviews and when imitating Warrior the challenge was to somehow make less sense than he did. I remember thinking he was a crazy person...over the years my opinion has been reinforced.

I remember really getting into his comeback when he faced Triple H at Wrestlemania. I bought the comic book and everything. I was sure that he was going to return to the main event picture right away and take the title. Then he disappeared and I lost all faith in him. The tag match between him, Sting, Hogan, and Hart finally was the final straw where he barely wrestled and still wore his jacket during the entire match.

Liked him as a kid but watching him now is almost impossible. He was a flash in the pan & only relevant 80's style.

Funny YouTube shit though.

He came into the business in the era of the slightly cheesy gimmick, fit right in, and during his run was right up there with Hogan.

Does anyone think that type of character could get over today? I like the fact that he had a kind of psychotic, maniacal edge. Plus the face paint, snarling, and steroids made him intriguing.

Nowadays he's kind of like the crazy racist uncle that no one really likes to acknowledge, but he's rich so they can't ignore him. HA! The fact that Vince still tries to court him has to speak for something.

Would the exact ultimate warrior character get over today? No.

Would a more modernized version get over? Perhaps.

Fuck that Hulking Up shit cuz that just ruines good matches. *ahem* Abyss.

I see what you did there. And I initially LOL'd.

At least he doesn't take a guys finisher and immediately jump up and start running around shaking his head like a goddamn fool. Not a Cena mark, just stating there is a big difference between Super Cena struggling to power out at 2 after taking 10 finishers in a row as compared to the shite Hogan/Warrior song and dance.

I'm more talking about his five moves of doom. It seems that, once he fires up with the first shoulder block any damage he's taken just doesn't affect him whatsoever.

I agree to an extent. Sometimes it is nice to have the oober-face go deep and pull out the big win....but after a year long title reign like the Super Cena reign..I was dog tired of his shit & especially the 5 moves of doom.

Can't stand the guy.

I have heard him cut one good promo, and that was against ORLANDO JORDAN - of all people. Other than that, his psychobabble and him as a person are just ridiculous. He's also crap in the ring, and everyone I've spoken to that has ever worked with him has nothing positive to say about him in or out of the ring.

By kayfabe terms, he was the man. In real life though, he was/is a total asshole who went into business for himself, and I don't respect that.

His match at WM 6 was good, and his match at WM 8 was amazing, he certainly could work a good match with the right opponent.

Obviously his move set was limited but in kayfabe he was super strong so it worked.

His promo's today look ridiculous but back in the day they fit right in.

I was super excited for his 1996 return, and I felt that they handled it poorly. But then again, they probably couldn't trust him.

And his WCW run was just plain pathetic.

Overall the Warrior holds a huge place in WWE history, but his personal problems and relationships issues ruin his legacy for me.

I was always more of a Brutus Beefcake fan myself but the Ultimate Warrior was exciting to watch in the same way a watching a tornado is awesome until you realize that the house it just ripped apart was someones entire life.

The Ultimate Warrior is absolutely amazing. He's the reason I fell in love with wrestling at a young age. I didn't like Hogan nearly as much as I liked Warrior. I have nothing bad to say about him. He reminds me of a more simple time where I could just get sucked into the action as opposed to analyzing technical prowess and workrate. Warrior for life.

I liked him as a kid too but I can't go back and watch his matches with the same amazement and wonder I once did. The world has changed. The business has changed (like 1,000 times over).

I still get some chills when I watch Hogan vs Warrior from Wrestlemania especially the beginning stare down with the crowd going totally ape shit. That saying, the matches he had were sub par and easily forgettable in comparison to some of the action of todays wrestling climate.

He does hold his place in wrestling history & should be admired for his contributions....But his style & gimmick is just totally not passable by today's standards.

I did like Warrior more than Hogan. To me he was like Hogan/Goldberg of the early 90s. I loved the match where he won the Championship from Hogan and the feud with Papa Shango was awesome as well but after that there was nothing. He was definitely an oddity that only worked during the earlier eras of WWE.

Also, his feud with Randy Savage was epic. I'll never forget the interview segment with Sherri trying to convince the Warrior to give the Macho Man a title shot. She even went as far as to kiss him. He acted liked he liked it before screaming "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!" in her face. I was heartbroken when Savage busted that septor over his head and Sgt. Slaughter won the title.

Also, Warrior's feud with Rick Rude was amazing. I could watch any of that stuff over again today.

yea, pretty much. I could watch Warrior's stuff over and over today. He got put into really good programs. Macho, Andre, Dibiase, Jake, Rude, Hogan, Undertaker. All these programs worked. The writers really did a great job in understanding how to book him and who to put him with.

He was like the Goldberg of the early 90's.

I got pumped by him when I was a kid.

EDIT- Perhaps I should rephrase that. As a kid, I used to find his antics both entertaining and enjoyable. To this day when I see some big muscle bound guy who has some goofy gimmick I think "Man, he has got to Ultimate Warrior this thing up. If I thought he was legitimately insane, I could take him seriously."

Some people have said when Gagne created the Hogan character that it could have been anybody. I think this is more true of Warrior, and I wonder how things would have been different if it had been someone who was focused on the business.

That Warrior confession is hilarious!! All they need is a clock in the background jumping around to different times like the Homer Simpson "portrait of an ass grabber" interview.
