View Full Version : How would Earl Hebner have played into the Bret storyline?

If he was still with WWE.

Do you think they would have made him a big part of the storyline? Maybe have him ref the Mania match on behalf of Vince?

If he was still an active member in WWE of course he would be involved and of course he would be referee.

Easily I could see this:

Vince forces Hebner to referee the match. Much like last time, threatening to fire him if he doesn't do the screwjob, close to the conclusion of the match when the screwjob is supposed to happen Hebner turns the tables on Vince and sides with Bret leading to him tapping in the sharp shooter. This way Hebner gets his name cleared after all these years and Bret has his screwjob on Vince and his moment in the sun.

Poor Earl... I like how Hogan drags his ass out for every half assed TNA finish now (Angle, Abyss, etc...)

I could see Vince "stacking the deck" against Bret by making Earl the ref. Then, since the match is about redemption, Bret's revenge, happy endings..., have Vince go to use a chair on a defenseless Bret at some point in the match and have Earl jump in and take the chair shot for Bret.

Earl gets to come off as a face and clean up his name and the match can have some cray finish culminating with Bret putting Vince in the sharp shooter and Earl coming to just in time to catch Vince tapping.

I don't think he would have been a big part of the storyline. The central focus is Vince/Bret b/c that is the rivalry. I think if Hebner was involved it would be more of the HBK/Bret thing where Bret made peace with him.

They aren't even allowed to say the referee's names on TV these days in the WWE. Earl Hebner would be reffing NXT.

No, only TNA is stupid enough to use lame refs in angles.

Remember that time McMahon/Helmsly Faction feuded with Hebner. And the main event of a Smackdown episode was like DX vs. The Rock and Earl Hebner. That was one of the few refs being involved angles I can think of in the WWE in the last 15 years that starred an actual referee and not like special referee Shane McMahon.

Let's not forget about Earl Hebner vs. Nick Patrick at InVasion.

Actually, let's go ahead and forget about that.

You guys are forgetting the best ref match ever, Charles Robinson vs. The Great Khali

By selling Brets cast to a fan after Raw.

By selling Brets cast to a fan after Raw.

I would hope that if he was there they'd leave him out of it entirely, as I feel a shady ref would add nothing of value to the program at this point. That said, we all know that's not the way WWE works. They'd definitely ruin the finish.

His main value to the storyline would only have occurred during the Wrestlemania match for any signs of a possible 2nd "screwjob" moment such as Vince putting Bret in a submission move or a post-match hug to end any bad feelings between the two.
