An update on April 6 make USB drives (1 to 16gigs) compatible for 360 memory (including profiles, game saves, themes, etc). USB HDDs "may work", but even so it'll still have the 16gig limit (:wtf:). Two USBs can be recognized at once.

This rules.

I wonder if they've changed the files system compared to memory units/the hard drive.

If not it may just make game hacking more prominent. Either way, for legitamate users, this does rule.

I'm guessing it was always compatible and Microsoft locked it to sell Memory Units. I have a USB flashdrive I use for school and 360 playlists (beats hours of ripping music). Knowing I can use it to ferry my profile around makes it a damn good 5$. [Possibly] saving games on my external HDD will also save some gripes.

Hmm, I like this.

I wonder if this will allow us to download saved files, rosters etc for games.

Would make it so easy to download user made NCAA rosters and shit of the sort.

Xbox 360-branded 16GB drives from SanDisk coming in May (http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/26/xbox-360-branded-16gb-drives-from-sandisk-coming-in-may/)

This morning at the PAX East Microsoft breakfast, Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb revealed the 16GB Xbox 360-branded Flash drive from SanDisk. Available in May, the not-yet-priced device comes pre-installed with the April 6 Dashboard update (http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/26/xbox-360-usb-support-announced-coming-april-6/) for those who shun the connectivity of Xbox Live.

In a conversation with Joystiq, Hryb informed us that all data will be transferable to the USB device, except for installed games -- users will need to re-install those directly to the USB device once more. He assured us, however, that, "If you've got a 16GB and you only want to use 8, you can use the UI and throttle it back." Further, he reiterated to Joystiq that while this branded device is certainly one option, other Flash drives (including those larger than 16GB) will work in the same capacity.

$50 says these will cost a lot more than the same fucking thing without the 360 logo.

Elaborate for me. Because it was super easy to hop onto Gamefaqs and read the thread which recommended the most realistic rosters, search the name of the rosters in the EA File Share and boom.

10 min? Maybe?

I must have missed this EA share....they publish home made rosters now?

Thanks for making me look silly.

How about this....Updated rosters from games like Fifa where it is a paid service!!!!!

Yeah they've had since I think 08. Definitely in 09. Upload the roster with real names, maybe even tweaked attributes and all someone has to do is search for the name of the roster, download it, and it's there.

You do know you can play Dynastys online too now, right?

I'm not sure how FIFA would work as I've never played it. I know the NBA 2K series has had a file share system for a while. So does Madden.

From what I've read, the USB update will include a tool allowing you to select how much space on the drive will be used for the 360, meaning it'll still be a different file structure. Since people already have methods to read HDDs with the 360 format, I imagine this will make hacking more prominent. I'd also imagine Microsoft will spend more time trying to crack down on the fuckers.

I'm just gl;ad I'll be able to partition off a portion of my Flash Drive to include my profile so I don't have to carry around that stupid Memory Unit anymore.

Got it and messed around with it. LOVE how the new update gets rid of the hard drive install crippling on banned consoles.

It formats the stick as FAT32 with a hidden folder called XBOX360. It uses just over 500mb as a system cache (Data0000) (ie, unusable for content) and then a 1mb file for a partition table (Data0001) and the rest is the actual data broken down to 1gb chunks.

It is essentially a virtual drive imaged to a FAT32 USB device and it appears to use an XTAF (same file system as the 360 HD/MUs) file system on the virtual drive.

Give it a week and it will be hacked to hell. Actually hope I'm wrong due to the implications for online cheating being made easier.

Should actually point out that other than Data0000, I didn't find any of the rest of it out, just read the rest a second ago.

You still can't copy music from the flash directly to the HDD. You still have to rip cd's.

Fail

Just play it from the flash or compuer if it's on a network.

So with this done now it leads me to one question...

I have a crappy 20gb hd for my xbox and its pretty much full except for like 2 gigs. Can I take a flash drive and take files off of it and store on my computer now? I hate to delete all my Guitar Hero and Rock Band Files but if I can move them somewhere till I ever decide to go back and play them that would be great.

To further what Shaggy said, can you just use it as another hard drive? I too have the 20 gig and it's pretty fucking full, despite not even installing anything or having any GH/RB shit.

Yes, but you'd have to copy all the files from the hidden Xbox360 folder on the root, meaning that it would be the size of the whole partition, not just the size of the files (ie if you had 1gb full of a 16gb drive, you'd have to copy the whole 16gb over)

To further what Shaggy said, can you just use it as another hard drive? I too have the 20 gig and it's pretty fucking full, despite not even installing anything or having any GH/RB shit.

Yeah you can. A lot of stuff can't be copied, but it can be moved, be wary of that.

Hell, you can even install games to the USB sticks.

There's already a program out to extract and inject files to a 360 format USB stick.

I was gonna buy a memory unit the other day when one of the dudes at Game said not to bother and told me about this update. Suffice to say as soon as the update went live, I tested out my USB stick by trying to watch some porn on the 360. The experiment was a complete success.

Now if only it worked with my external WD 500GB hard drive with all my old school WWF PPVs on it :(

You've always been able to watch <s>porn</s> movie files on the 360 through USB, now you're just able to use gamesaves and stuff on it.

In fact, the first thing I may or may not have done when I got my HDTV was try out that HD Pirates porn off a USB stick.

Not really the most "in dept" but Rooster Teeth tested a few to see how long games took to install on them and how they played.

Yeah, and you aren't capped at 16 GB for that.

That means I could theoretically hook my 1 TB external to my 360 and watch all my <s>porn</s> movies on it.

Amazon's deal of the day is a 16 GB Kingston for 25 bucks. It's not the greatest discount ever, but since it's available and is the max you can get use per slot, thought I'd mention it.
