From PWInsider:

WWE has filed a trademark on the term "WWE All-Stars", which is said to be for a videogame series that THQ is working on which would feature both Legends and current WWE stars.

---

Let the speculation begin. I'm guessing it's along the lines of Legends of WrestleMania if it isn't just some mobile game.

WWE All Stars
John Cena is a big dude, but you've never seen him like this. He enters the top of the ramp leading down to the ring, gives his trademark salute, and you find yourself wondering where Cena's neck ends and the rest of his torso begins. His jaw is proportionate for placement on Mount Rushmore, and his trademark jean-shorts (I call them "jorts") cover legs that could double as tree trunks. Cena is followed by The Rock, who is decked out in black trunks and chin-length sideburns--and the Brahma Bull is looking just as rocked out as Cena.

Welcome to WWE All Stars, where over-the-top is just the beginning. The brand-new wrestling game is being developed by THQ San Diego, and the game is being led by veteran video game designer Sal DiVita. The team is no stranger to wrestling games; many of them worked on 2008's TNA Impact. Though the team has carried that experience and passion for wrestling forward with All Stars, there will be no confusing one game for the other--All Stars is pure, fast-paced wrestling from the get-go, and the difference is seen in every aspect of the game.
If you think of the SmackDown! vs. Raw series as the "sim" WWE game, then All Stars is pure arcade action top to bottom. From a combat standpoint, DiVita says that All Stars has as much in common with a fighting game as it does with a traditional wrestling game. Part of that similarity comes in the overall speed of the game. Punches and kicks fly quickly in the game, and the recovery time of struck wrestlers is quicker than you might expect. As a result, the action in the ring is a good clip quicker than what SVR veterans may be used to.
Another aspect of that fighting game mentality comes in the controls themselves. The face buttons are used for strong and light grapples and strikes, and you'll be able to charge your strikes by moving and holding the right stick away from your opponent. Combos will play a large role in wearing your opponent down. We watched as Cena laid out The Rock with multiple lefts and rights to the jaw--during one more-complicated sequence, Cena was able to throw a quick one-two punch, then do a scissor take-down on The People's Champ.
Combos aren't just for standing, however, thanks to a juggle system that will let you string together multiple midair slams and throws in a row. The timing is delicate, but with a bit of practice, you can get a two- or three-hit chained slam full of huge leaps in the air and devastating slams on the mat. The early build of the game we played used slo-mo frequently, especially during juggle combos, perhaps as a way to make stringing moves together easier, as well as to illustrate the destructive power of the moves. As for defense, you'll have a small window in which you can reverse both grapples and strikes using the respective shoulder buttons (and you'll be notified of that window thanks to icons that will briefly appear onscreen).

http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2010/158/997443_20100608_embed007.jpg (http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/wwesmackdownvsraw2011/images/6264944/4/?path=2010%2F158%2F997443_20100608_embed007.jpg&caption=Juggles%252C%2Bcombos%252C%2Band%2Bbig-air%2Bmoves%253A%2BAll%2BStars%2Bhas%2Bas%2Bmuch%2Bin%2Bcommon%2Bwith%2Bfighting%2Bgames%2Bas%2Bit%2 Bdoes%2Bwrestling.&cvr=oCV0)Juggles, combos, and big-air moves: All Stars has as much in common with fighting games as it does wrestling. (http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/wwesmackdownvsraw2011/images/6264944/4/?path=2010%2F158%2F997443_20100608_embed007.jpg&caption=Juggles%252C%2Bcombos%252C%2Band%2Bbig-air%2Bmoves%253A%2BAll%2BStars%2Bhas%2Bas%2Bmuch%2Bin%2Bcommon%2Bwith%2Bfighting%2Bgames%2Bas%2Bit%2 Bdoes%2Bwrestling.&cvr=oCV0)

You'll get access to your signature moves and finishers in All Stars by building up an onscreen energy meter. In the case of The Rock, we got to see amped-up versions of signature moves like The People's Elbow, which had The Rock jumping high into the air to deliver his patented elbow finisher, as well as a Rock Bottom move that looked like a cross between the aerial maneuvers found in a Cirque du Soleil performance and the Incredible Hulk slamming to earth, complete with the requisite shock waves emanating from the bodies crashing to the mat.
Only Rock and Cena are being shown at E3, but if those two are anything to go by, the lineup for WWE All Stars looks to be a mix of current WWE Superstars and famous faces from the WWE's past. According to DiVita, the various characters in the game will handle differently from one another, not just in terms of the moves available to them, but also in the timing required to successfully pull off juggles and combos.
So, one part WWE wrestling game, one part fighting game, featuring a compelling mixture of old and new talent--that seems to be the formula for WWE All Stars. As with SmackDown! vs. Raw 2011, there's much more to be revealed about All Stars in the months leading up to its 2011 release, so stay tuned. If you've got questions about either game, you won't want to miss our live stage show from E3 2010 in Los Angeles. Both SmackDown! vs. Raw 2011 and WWE All Stars will be shown onstage along with the game's producers, and we'll be taking your questions live.

Sal DiVita has worked for Midway (http://www.giantbomb.com/midway/65-185/) since the early 1990's on various projects performing multiple jobs including motion capture, voice work, art direction, programming, and design.

DiVita's first in-game appearance was as a NON Native in Revolution X (http://www.giantbomb.com/revolution-x/61-12829/). He then took on the role of a lifetime as the infamous Beefcake Boy in Cruis'n USA (http://www.giantbomb.com/cruisn-usa/61-9890/).

Sal first appeared in the Mortal Kombat (http://www.giantbomb.com/mortal-kombat/62-7/) series in MK3 (http://www.giantbomb.com/mortal-kombat-3/61-1434/), where he portrayed four different characters including Nightwolf (http://www.giantbomb.com/nightwolf/94-399/) and the cyborg ninjas Cyrax (http://www.giantbomb.com/cyrax/94-310/), Sektor (http://www.giantbomb.com/sektor/94-94/), and Smoke (http://www.giantbomb.com/smoke/94-78/). His work as these four characters would also appear in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (http://www.giantbomb.com/ultimate-mortal-kombat-3/61-2178/), Mortal Kombat Trilogy (http://www.giantbomb.com/mortal-kombat-trilogy/61-8279/), Mortal Kombat Advance (http://www.giantbomb.com/mortal-kombat-advance/61-8325/), and Ultimate Mortal Kombat (http://www.giantbomb.com/ultimate-mortal-kombat/61-21277/). He would go on to play Scorpion (http://www.giantbomb.com/scorpion/94-1/) in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero (http://www.giantbomb.com/mortal-kombat-mythologies-sub-zero/61-17295/). His name is listed in the "Special Thanks" section of the credits for Mortal Kombat 4 (http://www.giantbomb.com/mortal-kombat-4/61-6421/) (for motion capture work he provided), Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance (http://www.giantbomb.com/mortal-kombat-deadly-alliance/61-6588/), and Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks (http://www.giantbomb.com/mortal-kombat-shaolin-monks/61-7649/).

DiVita's first programming job at Midway came in the way of WWF WrestleMania: The Arcade Game (http://www.giantbomb.com/wwf-wrestlemania-the-arcade-game/61-8027/). His arcade work continued as he joined the original design team for NFL Blitz (http://www.giantbomb.com/nfl-blitz/62-477/). He used his arcade sports experience as an art director for MLB Slugfest 2003 (http://www.giantbomb.com/mlb-slugfest-20-03/61-18355/) and Red Card 2003 (http://www.giantbomb.com/redcard-20-03/61-19644/). He also lent his hand to the design of the NBA Jam (http://www.giantbomb.com/nba-jam/61-16928/) remake in 2003. In 2005, DiVita lent his voice to The Warrior character in Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows (http://www.giantbomb.com/gauntlet-seven-sorrows/61-16449/) and again in 2006 for Rampage: Total Destruction (http://www.giantbomb.com/rampage-total-destruction/61-5390/).

Sal is an unlockable character in both NBA Jam (original) and NBA Jam T.E. (http://www.giantbomb.com/nba-jam-tournament-edition/61-14792/)

Oh dear.

To be fair, I did enjoy NFL Blitz and WWF Arcade Game though.

OK, the chain grappling mechanic looks interesting.

In the vid, Cena hits a powerbomb, catches him as he bounces back into the powerbomb position, forward flips him and then hits a kind of mid-air DDT.

Then the finisher, suplex position into 20 ft jump, into Attitude Adjuster.

Won't pay full price for it, though.

I presume they're just going to be reskinned SF4 sticks/pads since they made those as well. Like the standard stick which is good enough for most, doubt they'll do a TE stick for it.

Before we get another Smackdown vs Raw, THQ is going to be delivering an over-the-top, arcade-style wrestling game in the way of WWE All Stars. This WWE game is about getting into the action fast with twitch-like controls and overly stylized moves.
You'll likely recognize a lot of the moves, but expect a very cartoon-y result. Imagine The Big Show power bombing someone which then results in the opponent getting launched 12 feet into the air from the impact. You can even juggle others like in traditional fighting games (e.g., Street Fighter).
http://bulk2.destructoid.com/ul/191975-/MorrisonMachoManStandoff-620x.jpg
WWE All Stars (http://www.wweallstars.com/) (Xbox 360 [Previewed] / PlayStation 3 / Wii / PlayStation Portable / PlayStation 2
Developer: THQ San Diego
Publisher: THQ
To be released: March 29, 2011
There are around 31 wrestlers that will be in WWE All Stars, and so far, THQ has shown off Ricky Steamboat, Brett Hart, The Rock, Triple H, John Cena, Andre the Giant, The Big Show, Kofi Kingston, Rey Mysterio, John Morrison, Shamus and Randy "The Macho Man" Savage. Two additional characters -- Million-Dollar Man and Ted Dibiase -- will be available exclusively through GameStop pre-orders.
All of the fighters are split up into four categories: acrobat, big man, brawler and grappler. Don't expect the wrestlers to have the same moves just because they're in the same category, either. Someone like Shamus will have a completely different play style in comparison to someone like Brett Hart.
Only one game mode was shown off -- a simple one-vs-one gametype. There will be up to four-player support that we'll hear more about at a later date. We were at least told to expect a wrestler creator system, downloadable content and multiple modes including one called "Fantasy Warfare" where players pick between WWE Legends or WWE Superstars to see who the greatest (virtual) fighter of all time is.
http://bulk2.destructoid.com/ul/191975-/RockBellyMove1-620x.jpg
Controls were pretty simple from what I tried out on the Xbox 360. Y is assigned to your strong strike, X is for a quick strike, B is a strong grapple and A is for a quick grapple. Combos can be performed and a different move will happen depending on which direction the joystick is pushed with the button presses.
Players have an energy meter that allows them to use four different signature moves for each wrestler (The Rock's "Rock Bottom," for example.) These meters fill up faster the more a player uses different techniques. Performing these signature moves is done with a combo of either the X + A or Y + B buttons. These special moves also cause all of the action to go into very cheesy slow-motion.
Along with the energy meter is the Finishing Meter which is activated by pressing the left and right bumper together at the same time. A player can activate the Finishing Meter once it's filled up and if they connect, it's over; the opponent is knocked out.
On the defense side, players will be able to counter grapples/reversals with the left bumper and block/counter strikes with the right trigger. It's kind of a guessing game as you're not sure if the player is going for a strike or attempting to grapple. Everything can be reversed, so it's up to you to be quick enough to prevent an attack.
http://bulk2.destructoid.com/ul/191975-/SheamusMove2-620x.jpg
You'll of course be able to do things like climbing the turnbuckle, whipping players into the ropes -- you can even use objects like steal chairs, although you have a limit to how many times you can use a weapon before getting disqualified.
The other meter you'll be worrying about is your health meter, naturally. You're in trouble when it's flashing red and it'll be harder to get out of pins. One thing I liked about All Stars is that even a pinned player will have a second chance as a meter pop-ups for both players. The player that's pinning the opponent will need to try and fill the meter while the pinned player will be trying to increase the capacity of the meter, making it harder to get filled up.
Overall, I felt that the controls were very easy to pick up and play. I managed to win a couple of matches; granted, I used Andre The Giant against an AI-controlled Rey Mysterio. It'll be interesting to see if players use the Mad Catz Fight Sticks or Fight Pad for All Stars. I think the regular controller is a better fit, but I can see why THQ would want pro controllers.
The one thing I couldn't stomach with All Stars is the over-the-top look for the wrestlers. I mean, I get why they did it, I just think caricature designs of ANYTHING are always gross looking.
http://bulk2.destructoid.com/ul/191975-/hhh_hart_06-620x.jpg
After the WWE All Stars presentation, THQ had The Big Show, Ricky Steamboat, Kofi and Shamus talk about the game. It was kind of cool hearing how the current wrestlers are honored they are able to go up against old-school wrestlers like Brett Hart, Macho Man and more. It's just as much of a dream match for the wrestlers as it will be for wrestling fans that get WWE All Stars.

Gotta say I'm looking forward to this a bit more now.

Kalyx triaD

@ Hasney:

Doubtful. More likely the fighting game aspect is found in the combos and health system, we will not be talking about punishing HHH's overhead punch recovery with Rey's chest slap start-up. Returning to two different counter holds does open up a welcome meta-game and probably fits better here than SvR, which abandoned two-button counters last I heard(?).

The stick/fightpad shows that the left stick may have no use as well.

Per wrestler from the Q&A Destructoid did

I later asked Mike how many moves per wrestler we would see: we can expect the average of 500 each. There's overlap, of course, but some fighters like Bret Hart have done so many moves in their career that they'll be doing more in comparison to someone like Triple H.

500 is a lot of moves for one character in any game.

I'm betting they're counting different "versions" of each move. A weak powerslam, a medium powerslam and a strong powerslam adds up to 3 "versions" of one move.

That means, if they have "500 moves each" and they are counting W/M/S versions of each move, they would have 166 moves each which differ from situation to situation.

Then they'll include punches and kicks in that count, which would each have W/M/S versions of one punch or kick with a total of 5 or 6 punches or kicks, meaning a little under 160 moves each (punches and kicks aren't moves, they're strikes, afterall).

So, they'll have a lot of moves but saying it's 500 is likely artificailly inflating it.

160 or so moves would be broken up into situational moves. We have...
Both men standing
CPU on the ground and player standing
CPU lying in the turnbuckle
Player standing on the turnbuckle with a standing CPU
Player standing on the turnbuckle with a lying CPU.

Each situation could have the same inputs with different results. Inputing a certain input while both men are standing could result in a piledriver but the same input when your on the turnbuckle with the CPU lying on the mat could cause a frog splash.

If it works like that, it would be pretty easy to map all the different buttons and combos and inputs to the pad.

Not sure if its been mentioned but Nintendo Power is saying The Fink will be the ring announcer and JR with Lawler as commentators.

The developers also cited WWF No Mercy, Saturday Night Slam Masters, Def Jam Fight for New York, and Street Fighter IV as inspirations for the game and fighting style.

I'm still mixed bout this game. The design is terrible and I don't care for slow motion type wrestling moves. If THQ can get the following wrestlers in the game:

Shawn Michaels
The Undertaker
Kane
Wade Barrett
Jack Swagger
Steve Blackman
Bis Boss Man
Edge
Christian

Then I might buy the game

Tommy Gunn

Looking over the roster on the website - most of the unannounced legends seem pretty easy to figure out. I'm wondering who will fill the rest of the Current WWE slots. So far there's Cena, HHH, Rey, JoMo, Show, Kofi, Sheamus, and Orton. 7 slots left after that.

I'd guess Undertaker, Kane, Edge, Christian, The Miz, Evan Bourne, and R-Truth.

They're definitely holding a lot back from us with a bit over a month before release. We really only know about the gameplay, art style and half the roster. Aside from Singles, no other modes have been officially announced. CAW was just casually tossed out in an interview I think.

This could be a bad thing.

6 could also be a young Shawn Michaels.

4 could also be Austin, but he looks bald and 8 makes more sense considering the placement for Austin. At first he looked like Lashley to me but obviously it isn't him.

12 is really throwing me with that hat. He also has gloves, so it COULD be old school Taker with weird hat positioning. Could also be old school Cena, because it's clearly a baseball hat with the little nub. Yet another possibility is Brawler.

To the right of #5 is a portion of SOMEONE's leg. It doesn't look right for positioning for anyone, and it doesn't match anyone revealed. It's clearly yellow boots with purple and black striped pants. Beefcake?

Lock Jaw
02-17-2011, 12:44 AM
I think 10 could be Taker too. With the big shirt and the scraggly hair early on in his career. Though #5 does have the gloves.

I think #2 is Snuka (Who in All-Stars world is as massive as Hillbilly Jim). #11 is Mr Perfect
