28-year-old Billy Madison (Adam Sandler (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Sandler)) has spent his entire life reaping the benefits of his father's hotel chain. He spends his days drinking with friends Jack (Mark Beltzman (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Mark_Beltzman&action=edit&redlink=1)) and Frank (Norm MacDonald), and creating disturbances across his father's estate.
One day, Billy ruins a dinner meeting between his father, Brian (Darren McGavin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darren_McGavin)), and his associates by acting obnoxiously. This prompts Brian to lose any remaining faith in Billy, as he chooses the conniving Eric Gordon (Bradley Whitford (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bradley_Whitford)) to become the next chief of the hotel. When Billy protests that he can be responsible, Brian reveals that he secretly bribed all of Billy's school teachers in order for him to pass. Billy, who despises Eric, begs his father to reconsider his decision. The two finally come to a compromise; Billy must pass elementary (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elementary_school), junior high (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junior_high), and high school (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_school) on his own within the course of twenty-four weeks (two weeks per grade), in order to prove his competence.
Shortly after enrolling into school, Billy becomes attracted to a third grade teacher named Veronica Vaughn (Bridgette Wilson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridgette_Wilson)), who initially is disgusted with Billy and finds his enrollment to be a distraction for the other students. He eventually finds himself as one of Vaughn's students and earns her respect by defending Ernie (Jared Cook), his friend and classmate. Billy becomes popular among the third graders, and begins to miss them as he advances through school.
Billy's development and progression alarms Eric, leading him to take the offensive while Billy struggles in high school. He visits Billy's grade school principal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principal_%28school%29), Max Anderson (Josh Mostel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josh_Mostel)), and threatens to reveal his past as a professional wrestler (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Professional_wrestler) in which he accidentally caused the death of another man while performing a stunt. Coerced (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extortion), Max publicly states he took bribes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bribery) from Billy in return for passing him.
The announcement angers Brian, who chooses to give the hotel chain to Eric. Billy becomes distraught, and reverts to his original care-free lifestyle. Veronica and others come to Billy's aid, convincing him to keep fighting Eric. He returns to school and begins to study again, however, Billy realizes that he must reclaim the hotel chain. His grade school friends visit Max at his home and convince him to retract his accusations.
With Billy's named cleared, Brian argues to Eric that Billy deserves another chance, but Eric disagrees and threatens to file a lawsuit. Billy challenges Eric to an academic decathlon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decathlon) that will determine his father's successor. Although both men excel in different activities, Billy manages to take a single-point lead before the contest's final event, a Jeopardy! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeopardy%21)-style academic test.
The game progresses and Eric is given the chance to answer, and potentially win. However, he is asked to answer a question about business ethics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business_ethics), which he has no concept of, and begins to break down. Refusing to admit defeat, he brandishes a gun (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun) at Billy. Max, clad in his wrestling outfit, subdues Eric. The attack fails to keep Eric down, and he makes a final attempt to get back at Billy by turning his gun on Veronica. Suddenly, a rifle-wielding madman, Danny McGrath (Steve Buscemi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Buscemi)), whom Billy apologized to earlier in the film for bullying (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bullying) in school, disables Eric by firing a single shot into his buttocks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buttocks).
Later, at Billy's graduation, he announces that he will pass the hotel business on to Carl Alphonse (Larry Hankin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larry_Hankin)), his father's loyal, longtime employee, and will attend college with hopes of becoming a teacher.

Yeah, one of my favorite comedies of all time. Call me an idiot for liking Adam Sandler if you want, but his movies always make me laugh and this is among the funniest he starred in.

I love this movie and it's amazing for a lot of reasons, but it's not really a good movie by most means. It's a funny/nostalgic one for certain members of a small generation.
Dunno what to give it.

Yeah I agree, I rated it an 8 purely for the fact that I love this movie. It probably isnt deserving of an 8, but I am rating it on how much I liked it instead of the movie itself.

Dont really like Adam Sandler, I think most of his films are 'samey' and the only role he ever plays is a retard who thinks he is a toddler.

I lol'd at a few parts of this though, so 5

06-23-2010, 08:40 PM
Hard to rate nostalgia comedies. 7 for nostalgia, probably a 5 or 6 if I saw it today for the first time. I would give Happy Gilmore a nostalgia 7 but I think that rating would hold up if I saw it for the first time today.

and yes damndest said it best it is hard to rate nostalgic comedies. It should NOT be a 7-10 but it's impossible to rate it less.

El Fangel

Yeah, its kind of like the better wrestler thing, you rate it based on your own criteria.

Disagree with the title in that vid, but just a (hopefully) helpful hint for you ORANGE-LOCKE, since you're new here...YouTube embedding doesn't require the use of and tag codes at the beginning and end, just the embed code from the vid, and if you use the advanced HTML editor, be sure you de-link the links in the video's embed code or else it won't display properly.
