Windows Live messenger

My computer won't let me open windows live messenger anymore. It keeps giving me an error message that says:

Windows Live Messenger has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvience.

Here is the error signature:

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling messenger but that hasn't helped. Any ideas?

This happened to me once and this is the only way I could find to fix it. You're about to edit the registry so make sure you get the right file.

1. Press the Windows key and the R button together

2. In the run box, type regedit and press enter

3. If there are folders open, click the arrow to the left of each folder so you get something like this:

4. Click the left-hand arrow on the following folders in this order:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Software
Microsoft
MSNMessenger
PerPassportSettings

You should now be looking at something like this:

5. Click on the name of each of those folders that are just numbers (I have 2, circled below in red, but you could have more or less, depends how many profiles have signed into Windows Live Messenger) and in the right part of the window you should see a list of files.

6. Delete the one named UTL (circled above in blue) in every one of those numbered folders

7. Windows Live should now start, connect. Change your profile picture as soon as it starts or the problem could come back again. Change it to anything.

8. Close Windows Live down and start it back up again. Once connected, you can re-use your old profile picture if you wish and it will still work.

Holy fuck that was the dumbest problem I have ever had. It works now, you get a rep.
