Whoops! Looks like a loose-mouthed developer at Warner Bros. has let a certain cat out of a certain bag, with Mortal Kombat*Executive Producer Shaun Himmerick stating that his team has the next generation PlayStation Portable.*

"We have a PSP2 in the house and we’re looking at the engine, like what can it support," says Himmerick. "Always a big thing for us is the performance. We’re running at 60 fps, what can we do and do we have to build all the art assets over. We’re definitely looking at them. PSP2 looks like it’s a pretty powerful machine. We don’t have a 3DS system in house yet, but we’re looking to get one, and we’ll certainly look at what its power is."

Like all good Sony projects, this is looking like one of the worst kept secrets in town. Just like the PSPgo, inFAMOUS 2, Resistance 3 and Killzone 3. Sony is this industry's perpetual leaky faucet.*

Obviously never heard of an NDA, unless Sony forgot to make them sign one.

Now it's out in the open, hoping we hear some specs. If they get the support out of the gate, 3DS V. PSP2 might be less of a massacre this time around... Although I doubt it, what with the 3DS's gimmick and all.

Hoping for stick(s) not nub(s), physical media and not a deluge of inferior ports of current gen console games like the PSP suffered early in it's life.

that's a lot to ask from a company thatthinks they could box a steaming pile of shit and sell 5 million at launch.

Sony is likely to announce the first details of this Jan 27th, hoping to take the steam out of Nintendo's 3DS presentation today.

Also:

Well, this is interesting. VG247 has published what it says are pics from an early Sony PSP2 development kit. There isn't much to go by in terms of back story, and in many ways it looks more like a KIRF (http://www.engadget.com/tag/KIRF/) from Mr. Blurrycam's vintage collection than something for software testing, but let's hear what the site has to say: HD screen, two cameras (front and rear), microphone, two thumbsticks, and a rear "trackpad" of sorts, presumably akin to what we've seen on the PS Phone leak (http://www.engadget.com/tag/psphone). VG247 later updated to say that a source claims it's an earlier version of the kit and that a revision has since been developed without a sliding screen -- a move to perhaps deal with (also rumored (http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/25/more-details-emerge-of-supposed-psp2-with-backside-touch-control/)) overheating concerns. We know a PSP2 (http://www.engadget.com/tag/PSP2/) exists in some form, so this can go one of two ways -- either cleaner shots will be found, or an entirely different leak will surface later. Given the suspect Fall 2011 debut, we have plenty of time to wait around and see.

I dunno. I have a hard time giving a fuck about the PSP2. I don't give a fuck about the PSP and there are still like 10 games I'm looking to get for it (in addition to the 20 or so odd titles I have now). Pretty bad.

I'm a bit the same. I don't really want a home console experience "on the go" and Nintendo knows this. Games like Picross and Prefessor Layton are what I want handheld with a quick blast of Mario or something here or there. Not deep and long shooters.

Still, if the other rumors I've gleaned from the internet are true (still on UMD and PS3 powered), then I might take a second look.

I'll also put money on some type of 3D screen to hold off the 3DS, even if it's a glasses-based one.

Boom. Code-named NGP (Next Gen Portable) it has an OLED screen, front and back touch panels and 3 axis motion sensing. Also has 3G and Wi-Fi for internet.

And thank the fucking lord, the games are on memory stick and not download only. It'll be out before Christmas.

Considering who we're talking about I didn't take any screen shots seriously. These are guys who made 'target video trailers' a notorious term a few years ago. Even the just released PSP2 trailer is nothing but concepts and such, just like Microsoft's project natal debut trailer way back.

I guess we'll get some hard stuff next E3. Maybe some hands on at that point.

I mean, I feel bad that we bukkake'd any news from 3DS and here we are all skeptical about PSP-2 - but anybody who released PSPGo with serious prospects in mind needs to be in the hot seat.

Just read that they were playing Uncharted at the event, so it is legit. Fuck me.

Also reading what Kalyx just posted reminded me of the Killzone original trailers. Good times.

Probably more likely to get a "PSP2" than a 3DS, just off the basis that the games will probably be more in line with what I want to play. I have played my PSP and my DS equally, but enjoy my PSP more for the games it can power.

Boomer

That said, I won't get either during launch. The NGP or whatever will have to come down in price for me to want it, probably.

The fact that their plans are for it to eventually be a portable PS3 has almost got me sold on it. Play your game at home on your PS3, save it to the cloud and then pick up on the NGP. Sounds pretty good to me.

No way 250. No way it can be that low. Not sure how 3G would make it to the US either. 300 at bare minimum I think; doubt it would go higher than 400.

NGP Battery Life Will Be Comparable To The PSP's

Also, if that Uncharted shot is real and not pre-rendered, I'm betting one hour battery life.

http://kotaku.com/5744900/ngp-battery-life-will-be-comparable-to-the-psps

The sight of Sony's new NGP gaming handheld running demos of PlayStation 3 games is both exciting and terrifying for those concerned about the so-called PSP2's battery life. Sony tells Kotaku that we can expect a decent amount of charge.

The battery life target is the same as that of the current PSP 3000 model, Sony exec Shuhei Yoshida told Kotaku in Tokyo after the NGP was revealed. That PSP model gets between four and six hours.

If Sony achieves its target, the NGP would have a battery life that's also comparable to the less powerful 3DS, the next handheld gaming machine from Nintendo. The makers of Mario estimate that their machine will last 3-5 hours with its 3D functionality activated and up to eight hours with it turned off.

A game creator familiar with the NGP development kit told Kotaku that Sony's powerhouse portable is proving to have better battery life than the PSP 3000 on current kits, though readers should note that finished gaming hardware doesn't always run at the exact same specs as development kits. Our source credits the NGP's efficient chips and the fact that its games run off of flash media, as opposed to the discs that spun in most models of the PSP.

The NGP is expected later this year.

I like that it uses flash drives but honestly I bought the PSP and I rarely play it. So I dunno if there's a point in getting this anytime soon.

What Would Kevin Do?
01-27-2011, 01:50 PM
I'm curious to see if it'll run apps or not. Probably not, but it would be cool. It has 3G, so put Skype on there, and it could double as a phone.

Emperor Smeat
01-27-2011, 03:49 PM
The fact Sony hasn't revealed the price could be a potentially big issue since one of the last things Nintendo waited to announce was the battery life seeing as it is a bit low compared to their previous models.

If the device was going to be $200 - $300, then Sony wouldn't have wasted any time to reveal the price to give a quick counter hit at the 3DS but the rumor price might be between $350-$399 with Sony loosing a lot of money production cost-wise.

It looks cool..but I am just not excited. Like others have said, it would need to have a pretty cool line-up to impress me. I am leaning more towards the Nintendo camp for my next handheld. I eventually got a PSP and I enjoyed it..but not as much as my DS.

Also, I know that;'s just demoing the various functions, but I dislike the whole "tapping" on the touch screen deal.

Plus friend codes suck, where as the NGP has friends list and so and so.
