Former WWE performer Jorge González (a/k/a Giant González) passed away Wednesday in San Martin, Argentina, reports Argentinian news outlet Impulso Baires. He was 44 years old.

Sources of González' hometown, El Colorado, confirm that he was taken to San Martin after "suffering a decompensation."

González had been suffering from poor health for years as he was confined to a wheelchair and used a dialysis machine to treat kidney failure. It was announced last October that González would return to the United States in May 2010 to appear at The Legends of the Ring wrestling convention in Monroe, New Jersey. Ultimately, he was forced to cancel the appearance due to lingering health problems.

González' is the fourth former WWE talent to pass away in the past six weeks, following Lance Cade, Luna Vachon and Mike Shaw (a/k/a Bastion Booger).

He was great, compared to Khali. I remember his very last match ever against The Great Muta. It's a shame.

RIP El Gigante

I'm sorry to hear the guy passed, and I always loved watching him as a kid, but let's not kid ourselves and say they guy had a nominal bit of in-ring talent.

I remember on an episode of WCW Saturday Night's Main Event ( I believe) he choked Ric Flair with one hand and Flair did an awesome job of selling that choke he turned purple and everything. Since my grandfather hated Ric Flair (he always bought into the show) he instantly loved El Gigante. For years after he'd ask me about him every so often.

Was he a great wrestler? No. But he was a good performer and no one deserves to die so young. The shame of it is he probably had a rough life for the very thing that made him (quasi)famous.

It's always a shame to see one of the guys from the fraternity of wrestling go.

Rest in peace.

Loved the full bushy chin beard/pencil mustache combo. RIP one of the all time great Baywatch guest stars.

I'd hate to be a pallbearer for that huge ass casket.

Actually, the show was called World Championship Wrestling, which would changed its name to WCW Saturday Night in April 1992.

RIP. I liked him a lot in WCW when he would play the best friend to Brian Pillman and when he went to WWF I couldn't believe it when he came in as a heel of course I was like 7 or 8 at the time. He seemed like a legit nice guy though.

While yes it is a shame to see anyone pass away, at least in GG's case it was all natural health related.

No substance abuse issues, well not that has been said but at least it wasnt alcohol, pain killers, or any other of the more common death issues we've seen as of late.

Giant Gonzalez, WCW and WWE Wrestler, Dead at 44

Jorge Gonzalez, who was known as Giant Gonzalez and El Gigante as a pro wrestler and was a one-time draftee of the Atlanta Hawks, died this week at the age of 44, according to reports.

The cause of death for the 7-7 Argentinian was complications of diabetes and other issues that stemmed from his size.

Gonzalez began his career as a basketball player, a selection of the Atlanta Hawks in the NBA Draft. However, despite his massive size, he was unable to make the team. At that point, Turner Broadcasting also owned World Championship Wrestling, and Gonzalez' future shifted to pro wrestling.

He wrestled in WCW from 1990 through early 1993 when he signed with WWE (then WWF). He was best known for his airbrushed body suit, as opposed to being a great worker in the ring.

Gonzales had a short run in WWF as a heel. He lost to the Undertaker in a match at Summerslam in 1993 and soon after left the company.

After Gonzales' wrestling career he acted a bit, including one appearance in "Baywatch." He then returned to Argentina, where he reportedly owned a farm.
