Has anybody else been following Kanye's GOOD Fridays?

He's been releasing a new song every Friday for free and is gonna keep going until Christmas. They've all been pretty ridiculous so far.

ANYWAY, I am pretty sure his upcoming album is going to be one of the best hip-hop/pop albums of all time. Apparently the stuff he's been releasing has been throwaway trash compared to the rest of it.

Not sure where this thread is going, but just wanna say that if you hate Kanye West you need to grow up

I loved Kanye West's first three albums, and a bunch of his early mixtapes. I was a big fan since he first broke out, but none of this impresses me. Nor does that single I've been hearing around.
I didn't think very much of the last album either. Last good thing I heard from him was a verse on the Jay Z album, and before that...Graduation.

This we can agree on.

I used to be the biggest Kanye hater ever until I started listening through his CDs and realized he only makes good songs

Jeritron

He is extremely talented, but he makes some bad songs here and there. Barry Bonds anyone?

I don't know. Pretty much have no interest in most of what he's done recently since I know he's capable of much better.
Hopefully he can come out with an album on par with those first 3

Buzzkill

OK yeah Barry Bonds is a pretty crappy song. That's pretty much it though :(

I don't know, but I can't stand Kanye. I think he's overrated.

I liked his first album, if anything. I never really saw what was so great about those songs from 808s' and Heartbreak

Funky Fly
10-09-2010, 01:47 AM
808 had its moments, but it was mostly just ricockulous autotuned warbling about how depressed he was at the time. I mean, I understand it was a bad time with his marriage falling apart before it happened and his mom dying and all, and I feel for him there, but he was not in the right frame of mind at all when he made that. Very lackluster.

I like his music, his lyrics are pretty cheesy but atleast they are honest and fun. I've always thought of him more of a pop artist than a rapper though, he is the master of a good hook. I think it's pretty cool that he can sample bands like Can and King Crimson and apply it to his style of music, looking forward to his new album.

All of the Lights is my shit.

Actually, Monster is amazing in my car on the highway,

So Appalled reminds me of a banging 1995 track (Notorious BIG would've smashed this track).

Devil in a New Dress, Kanye is basically talking about Amber Rose (which i think he's 200% on, but he should've seen this gold digger a mile away), still a good "smoke an L" track.

Man, i could go on but im hungry

Johnny Vegas
11-10-2010, 12:57 PM
Wait,

Runaway is my jam as well

Power is just a great war/sports/determination type of song. Great for video editing/promos

Lost in the World is on some other shit, in a great way. Like, i was high when i heard this song and i was like "lol this shit is wtf good"

Blame Game is good, Kanye gets 200% on this track as well

Gorgeous...is gorgeous lol

I love the whole album. if i could take one song out or if i had to say something negative, i wish it was longerrrr

Buzzkill

I honestly think that Kanye is going to be in the "cultural icon" talks with people like Ali, Lennon, Michael Jackson, Bono, etc. He is just too big, too talented, and too outspoken and controversial to not be. And i would vot "yay" to it

Buzzkill
11-15-2010, 04:05 PM
I think he deserves the spot, but unlike all of those artists there's a serious negative weight attached to his name. It's almost "taboo" to admit you like Kanye because he is such a jackass

Johnny Vegas
11-15-2010, 04:41 PM
Same with Pac, Ali, and many others. People are overly-sensitive to things because we always want a "clean, perfect, never any controversy" type of "hero".

He lost his mom, basically brought up a nobody stripper who probably never even owned Ray-Ban, and got played for another FEMALE, got shafted at award shows (even i'll admit that..because he is cocky, they didnt want to award him), etc. Of course he's done his share of stuff, but like i named the names earlier, these are cultural icons that CHANGED the way you look at whatever they were involved in.

Buzzkill
11-28-2010, 01:06 PM
Dunno what you are talking about here Triple A. One of the reasons I love this so much is because it doesn't sound like any rap album I have ever heard. Crazy interludes, interesting song structures, interesting sampling.

Totally "changes the rules" of hip hop. Lost in the World is experimental music by any definition

It's pretty good. I guess I can see why people would call it a "game changer" or whatever. It's definitely different than anything else out there. I admire the production and the innovative style...

I can't say that I'm incredibly into it or anything yet though. Like I am listening to it, and I am enjoying it, and I can appreciate it for what it is as an artistic expression/experimentation, but it isn't grabbing me like a "classic" album should. Still think Das Racist has the best rap album out there this year though I know I'm in the vast minority now.

Kapoutman
11-29-2010, 03:26 PM
Listened to it. I like a couple of the songs, but I don't really see it as a "game changer" like some of you said. It's still good, but I don't find it to be as memorable as it is made out to be.

I feel left out. :(

Buzzkill
11-29-2010, 03:34 PM
It definitely grew on me a ton after a few listens, but then again I loved it when I first heard it so I dunno.

Lyrics are great, production is huge + over the top good, just a ton of emotion packed into every song. Each one could potentially be my favorite.

Also have to consider where it fits in to his musical career (which has been insanely good up to this point) and where it fits into the progression of the genre as a whole. It makes his old stuff look completely anemic and makes the rest of hip hop seem totally lifeless.

FakeLaser
11-29-2010, 03:52 PM
I definitely think the lyrics are great and the production is incredible, it just hasn't really resounded with me. And when I say I can appreciate it, I definitely am saying I appreciate where it fits in his career and alongside the rest of the genre. I can see its relative importance in said confines.

It's definitely one of those albums where you're looking at an artist who is at the top of their genre both commercially and from a creative standpoint, at their creative and/or experimental peak.

I can see it being compared to Radiohead with Kid A, in that sense, at least for its innovative content and perceived quality. And you see how much Radiohead changed music with Kid A.

No one can deny the influence Kanye has had on the rap game over the past decade, taking it out of the ghetto/gangsta rap and cookie-cutter bling bling era and into a more self-conscious, intelligent and... I almost want to say suburban party realm, at least in the mainstream. Underground rap/hip hop has always had experimental albums of this nature (not exactly like this, but you get my point), however not with the same grandiose production levels. He's not the first to do something like this. But he's been afforded the biggest stage to do so, and as an artist of his stature... this album will hold a great deal of significance.

Probably one of those albums that is "rewarding" if you spend some time with it. Which I haven't really done much of yet. I can see the impact this is going to have, but I haven't gotten that into it to be honest.

Funky Fly
11-29-2010, 03:55 PM
On first listen I was like "damn, me likey". 234572836578 listens later and I am like "one of my all time favourites"

-EDIT-

Otherwise what RZA said in the 3rd last sentence.

Buzzkill
11-29-2010, 05:12 PM
Also, listening to this on good speakers or headphones is really key. The production is so densely layered that a lot gets lost on regular speakers. The "OHHH OOOH OOOOHS" on Dark Fantasy sound great (you can hear Kid Cudi, Elton John, Alicia Keys, Beyonce, and Charlie Wilson all pretty distinctly) and the baseline on Runaway is way way better.

I just listened to as much of this as I could on Youtube. There are a few tracks missing.

For some reason Hell Of A Life was my favorite at first listen, but I haven't seen that mentioned here.
I need to listen to some more.

It's good. I don't know if I like it as much as I liked his first few albums when I was way into his music, but maybe I've just changed a bit. Back then was when I thought he was a genius.

Jeritron
12-03-2010, 12:25 AM
This is definitely the direction I thought Kanye was going, and it's already growing on me huge. I think 808s was a bit of a diversion from what I liked about his music. I just didn't really like it.

Though Lost In The World feels like a descendent of that 808s style, but hits with me. I think he's perfected mixing that style with his strengths. I'm also feeling a stronger and more poignant influx of the African drumming and musical style that he tried to implement in 808s. That's a really cool element.

But this album has the right feel. After "I Wonder", I sort of figured he was going to eventually experiment more with some of these sounds. I loved that song deeply.

For all of Kanye's supposed shortcomings as a person, he really seems to tap into something real and touching in his music. It's genuine. Music is definitely his catharsis and that's rare these days, unfortunately.

Gonna go buy this
