Cinematic Universe Timeline/References:

Captain America
- Steve Rogers becomes the titular super soldier who battles Red Skull. Super-Soldier Serum, Odin's Vault, Cosmic Cube, Stark Expo established. Cap defeats Red Skull and is lost in the frozen north. Howard Stark retrieves the Cosmic Cube. Decades later, Cap awakes in the present and meets Nick Fury. He missed a date. Nick Fury meets him later to discuss a mission to save the world.

Iron Man
- Tony Stark, talented son of Howard Stark, is taken hostage and forced to support his heart with a miniaturized Arc Reactor. He becomes Iron Man and defeats his former business partner gone mad. Captain America shield replica seen in Stark's workhouse, Agent Coulson introduced. Stark catches the attention of SHIELD. Nick Fury announces the Avengers Initiative.

Iron Man 2
- Tony Stark must confront both his failing heart, Whiplash, and rival Justin Hammer. After having a drunken meltdown, SHIELD intervenes and presents him with Howard Stark's unfinished concept for a new element (possible replication of the Cosmic Cube). Agent Coulson is reassigned to New Mexico. Stark defeats Whiplash with the help of War Machine, but loses the confidence of Nick Fury. He remains on the "Super Secret Boyband" as a (presumably technical/weapons) consultant. Incredible Hulk's college battle occurs during Stark and Fury's last meeting. In New Mexico, Agent Coulson finds a hammer in a crater.

The Incredible Hulk
- Bruce Banner lives on the run from General Ross and his unit. As the Hulk, he ignites a rivalry with aging soldier Blonsky. Banner meets with Betty Ross as he comes closer to discovering a cure for his condition. Blonsky uses what's left of the Super Soldier Serum to battle Hulk, but is defeated in the college battle. After the battle, Hulk roars toward a mountain region where a thunder storm has developed. Later Blonsky adds Gamma Radiation to his condition and becomes the Abomination, wrecking havoc. Hulk battles Abomination and defeats him. He returns on the run, losing his chance to be cured, but also appears to have controlled the transformations. Tony Stark meets Ross in a bar and reveals the Avengers Initiative, presumably in regard to the Hulk.

Thor
- In one of the Nine Realms of the universe, Asgard, Thor nearly becomes king before Frost Giants reignite an old conflict. Disobeying his father (and at the tacit behest of his brother Loki), Thor leads a botched operation that angers his father, Odin. He his banished to Midgard - Earth, where he meets Jane Foster and her colleagues. SHIELD has surrounded Mjonir and Thor is powerless, while Loki enacts his plan to rule Asgard and destroy the Frost Giants out of shame, jealousy, and general madness. Agent Coulson calls off Hawkeye and allows Thor to interact with Mjornir, to no effect. Thor begins to accept his new life. Sif and The Warrior's Three seek out Thor on Earth when they find Loki to be insane, and Loki sends the Destroyer. After nearly dying protecting his friends, Thor regains Mjonir and defeats the armor. He offers his allegiance to SHIELD before returning home to defeat Loki and destroy the Rainbow Bridge. Nick Fury meets with Jane's colleague and shows him the Cosmic Cube, but it seems Loki has possessed the scientist.

Mark Ruffalo as Hulk?

I'm not really a fan of comic books or comic book movies, but I'll see it just because.

Wow, got all excited because I thought there'd actually be one or two shots from the movie, either way that was still mad epic and 'I just filled the cup'.

This movie is gonna be so fucking awesome! Seriously, as a life-long Marvel fanatic (18 years and counting) if I die the day after I see this movie, I will die a happy man.

And awesome cast as well. Not a big fan of Mark Ruffalo, but I guess he's a big enough name to fill the role. :y:

The need Drew Struzan to do a classic poster for this too, instead of just slapping something together with all the characters like an internet photoshop.

- Captain America's suit is updated, Evans can move around easier this time (it was metioned that the suit in the upcoming movie is purpously cumbersome).

- Tom Hiddleson is very happy that Loki's plans are bigger, adding more fuel to the accepted idea that he is indeed the main villain... or at least one of the major players.

- Scarlette Johansson will sport shorter hair than her IM2 look, but it's just has hot red as before.

- Nick Fury will have an updated look as well.

- Kevin Feige gave a not-so-subtle tidbit that Avengers will the be the start of a 'team-up franchise'. Perhaps like the comic, the members will be rotated and times feature entirely different teams. This is a very good idea on Marvel's part.

It's the new trend. It was pouches and shoulder pads that did nothing. Not it's zippers.

Well it seems at least in Thor's case, he is indeed wearing his own movie's costume. Perhaps his Ultimates costume is either a SHIELD variant or his non-active garb.

Cap's new suit doesn't look so bad in action, and we can see how it allows Evans to move better than he did in First Avenger. Has a Power Rangers quality to it.

Looks like they're dealing with a lot of invaders.

So what happened to hugh jackmans wolverine being confirmed for the movie. Now I know he isn't an Avanger but I think he's "a new avanger"... I read he was confirmed for the movie, is this just going to be a comeo then or is it bullshit.

It would be fucked up connecting the X-men universe and Avengers one but I'm sure they have before.

With the new spiderman franchise maybe he can have a lawyer and set up a new daredevil movie and have The amazing spiderman be in the same movieverse as the avengers and a new daredevil.

It does make sense to be honest. Why would you have him running around in a uniform from the 1940's when you have guys in hi-tech armour on your team.

The Cap movie one still looked better imo though. But I'll wait to see the final product on screen.

The EW picture looks a million times better than the production stills do. I know they'll color correct and light it to make sure the suit looks great on film. But like Lock Jaw said, I'm not sure those things are going to change the fact that the helmet looks a bit stupid.

They keep saying Cap's in a dark mood because he's marooned in a future time and all that. So they should have added some black to his suit similar to Bucky Cap to give him some visual edge.

Thor looks epic as always. He has a presence that, in my opinion, matches costumed Christopher Reeves in terms of nobility and power.

Yeah, he definitely owned that role as Thor.

You know, after watching Thor again, I really can't find much fault with it at all, at least in terms of my tastes. I've very sad that the director isn't staying for the sequel, because you can really tell he respects the source material. I was ecstatic when the first screens showed up, and revealed that they were going for the Medieval-alien looking aesthetic that was prevailant in so much of the book's history. I thought they would go straight medieval, since that's what the current book's look is.

And then I saw the Destroyer pic, and nearly creamed myself.

I'm not saying the movie was The Dark Knight, but it really didn't do anything wrong. Probably my biggest criticism is that I thought Volstagg should have been fatter. Too bad Orson Welles is no longer with us. He would have been a great Volstagg.

People said Thor really got slow in between the costumed bits but that only made the Hammer's return more epic. I don't think it's so much that it got slow, but that it went on too long. Even then, it was forgiveable. I mean, I don't know what others were saying, but they really could have trimmed a lot of the SHIELD stuff and still kept the second act powerless, but have a much tighter movie.

Actually, that time could have been spent building up his relationship with the other members of Asgard, or giving more scene time to Loki's scheming. But still, I loved the movie and can't wait to see him in the Avengers.

I liked Thor. Just can't see how he can't beat everything himself now that he has his powers.

That's always been the problems with Super Teams. Especially compilations. Cap is a hero, but he should be out of his league when Thor, Hulk, and even Iron Man are on the scene.

But I'm sure everyone will have plenty to do, mostly because Thor won't act tooo Godly and shit.

One of the worries I've seen the most is that this is gonna be the "Tony Stark Show." I'm not sure that's the case. Stark's character is the one most suited to sound bytes for the trailer, and so I'm pretty sure it won't happen. But still. Downey's been awesome, so I might just be able to live with it if it is.

Loki mentioned in the first movie that there's ways to travel around without the Bifrost, I guess Thor found one and used it to head to Earth for his Avengers adventure. I wonder if the love angle will get a mention in Avengers (not sure how much cross-pollination script work was done, but the connections between Thor, Cap, and Iron Man were well done).

Entertainment Weekly interviewed the cast a few weeks ago, Downey said that at first he wanted it to be "Iron Man's show", and they tried it that way but it didn't work. Story will give all the characters ample time to shine, and there will be a big focus on all these completely different personalities overcoming their differences with eachother. Thor, working with mortals he considers inferior to himself, Tony for once in his life not being the center of the universe, Cap struggling as a man out of his time, and Hawkeye and Widow having been military all these years, now having to adjust to being "superheroes" and getting along with a bunch of people who just walked into a position they spent their whole lives working to attain.

And they can complain and lose their place on the team. I'll be Thor's waterboy anytime. Fucking AVENGERS.

They do find ways to explain their roles. Hawkeye has tranq-tipped arrows to calm Hulk down if he gets out of line. Widow is probably the go-to stealth member since everybody else blows shit up.

Surely Banner himself put something together to keep Hulk in check, the arrowhead could be Vibranium, and Hawkeye's the man to take the shot (before he starts to "root for the guy").

And since that's a plot detail, I better see Hulk toss the team around for a bit. That will be fun.

Nah, I think Tony and Cap will share leadership like they do in the book. Like the article said, they tried making Tony the main guy, and it didn't feel right to them.

I understand that Iron Man was the most successful of the films, but it's not as if Captain America bombed. Further more, just because Iron Man is currently enjoying some mainstream popularity, is no reason to go against decades of source material, and have Cap play second fiddle to tony. Especially since they seem to have such great respect for that material when it comes to everything else. Before Iron Man came out Cap was an cultural icon, bigger than the industry he was created, and non-comic fans didn't know Iron Man from Steel. 50 years from now Iron Man could very well fade back into cultural obscurity, but everyone will still know who Captain America is.

Honestly, I don't think they need to have Tony lead just to "boost sales" or whatever. People aren't going to see the trailer for this and say "hmm if Iron Man isn't in charge I'm not going to see this." I've talked to over a dozen people about this movie who I know for a fact don't read comics, and they are excited as I am about it.

Point is, the concept alone will sell this movie. You don't need to pull any crap that defies the comics and will upset the comic readers, just to attract the mainstream crowd. Everyone is going to go see this.

I could see hawkeye being the one to bring down Hulk as a way of proving he's fit to hang with all these super types. He and widow are definitely going to have to have a badass moment or two so they don't come off as tag-alongs.

Yes, but the Marvel movies have kind of avoided doing that since they moved away from Sony and Fox.

They're not gonna knock Schindler's List off the scene, but they're far less silly and cheesey. This kind of borders on Wonder Twins territory.

Captain of Fun
10-28-2011, 11:56 AM
I agree to a point, but it's not as if they have gone for Dark Knight level realism.

I'm not saying Hawkeye grabs a standard tranquilizer dart and puts down the hulk. Yes that would be Wonder Twins silly. But I could see Banner working with Sheild's infinite resources to create some sort of serum that can maybe not tranquilize, but calm hulk enough where he reverts back to banner. Fury then adapts that into an arrow for Hawkeye, so he can take hulk down from a distance.

Arrow could be made from vibranium to explain how it could penetrate hulk's skin. Since vibranium has already been introduced in the Cap movie, it wouldn't feel "out of nowhere".

I don't think that's any sillier than what we've seen from the movies thus far. Especially considering that we know the shield helicarrier is in.

It's very rare that Hulk get's taken down in a physical confrontation. Even the combined might of Thor, Iron Man, and Cap shouldn't be enough to take him down. It almost always comes down to calming hulk down in some way.

That's a good answer, but she didn't come off as Earth's Mightiest Hero in Iron Man 2...not even top 100.

She's not meant to be an in your face, heavy hitter. In the Marvel Universe, she is one of, if not the most deadly espionage agents on the planet. She's the recon/intelligence member of the team.

Also, there was an interview with Whedon a while back, where he said that a big part of the movie is how these characters get along and come to trust one another. A part of that story is how Widow and Hawkeye are soldiers put in a position out of their comfort zone, where they have to work with these heroes who basically just walked into a position that they themselves strived there whole life to achieve.

It adds an interesting dynamic that I'd much rather see, than just adding another powered female, simply for the sake of flash and style.

From what I've seen of the film I'm not very excited. I enjoyed Iron Man and I felt that I'd had my fill by the end of 2. I also enjoyed Captain America but by the end of the film he's lost everything that makes him interesting and now he's just a beefy man. Scarlett is good at playing disaffected characters and is a terminally uninteresting choice as she's someone who can look attractive and yet completely boring at the same time. I actually was looking thru a copy of Previews a few months ago and saw the Hawkeye movie statue coming out for this and had to order it because how badass it looked. Plus I've been told I look like Jeremy Renner. *shrugs*

Except black, right?

What mach armor is it Kalyx?

Mark 7. M6 is in the movie (with the triangle chest light), and I guess we'll see why he'll need to upgrade by the final battle. I like it, it removes some grey portions and the panels seem more rounded - perhaps to coincide with his current comic look.

Totally! Bizzaro Jeremy Renner!

I'm not really a huge Iron Man fan, with him contributing to Cap's death in Civil War and all, but it sounds cool.

I guess?

I'm too much of an Avengers mark. A fucking video saying 'Avengers Spoilers' fuck me how could I not click it?

Anywhos, as I said it doesn't really reveal anything really groundbreaking, so I'm still pretty much as much in the dark as I was five minutes ago.

Except that I now know that Ultron is the main villain.

Can't imagine Atlantis being involved in the movie without Namor in it in some way.

Unless it is to set up an appearance by Namor in the sequel.

Also, thought Fin Fang Foom was a giant dragon/dinosaur thing in stretchy purple Hulk pants.

This is how I know he looks.

Other pic looked more like some kinda robot. I don't doubt you that it is him, though. I guess he got some sort of character revamp recently.

huh i never remember him in the purple pants... usually always as above but he has undergone a restyling as late

I originally thought it could probably be Fin Fang Foom without the 'Fin Fang Foom' part. Wouldn't be very 'realistic' having a huge dragon turn up and calling it/himself 'Fin Fang Foom'.

Captain of Fun

Considering Loki is the villain, the Midgard Serpent is much more likely.

The purple "pants" thing was in Nextwave, which wasn't really a true in continuity version of Fin Fang Foom. Awesome comic though.

Lock Jaw

Pretty sure he wore purple pants in the normal continuity as well. (I figured the panel I posted was an out of continuity thing, though)
