Subtitles that have key words in unusual colours are just the best.

I do, because not often do the cutscences have a replay button if you didn't hear clearly enough what was said.

Perhaps I am missing something, but why?

Also, people ALWAYS have a tendency to talk to me during them.

Some voice acting is pretty terrible aswell, or the sound is mixed badly so you can barely hear anything. Assassin's Creed was guilty of both counts and had no subtitle option.

Depends on the game but majority of the time no subtitles.

A game like Muramasa has the subtitles on automatically because it only uses Japanese for speech while a few others times I'd put it on to figure out what was said if the voice acting or quality is bad.

My problem is that if subtitles are on I tend to read them automatically and miss what's actually going on in the game.

Same reason why I can't watch subtitled movies. I get caught up in reading the dialog than paying attention to the action.

Though for some reason I don't have this problem with closed captioning.

I think I have played exactly two games with voiceovers, and so have only faced this decision twice.

Both times I think I opted for subtitles.

did you just start playing games last week?

They're on for the most part because I tend to have people in the room who don't have the decency to shut the f*ck up and me turning the volume up tends to piss them off.

Only if they don't put English voice overs in the game to I have them on, otherwise no use for them.

Off because I have an awesome Surround Sound system and can hear everything perfectly.

It depends on if it is a foreign game.

On, because of this.

On, to make sure I can catch the little details that I might miss if they were off.....
