What are some good manga to pick up?

Looking to get into something new and since I like anime, I was curious if anyone here reads manga and has any recommendations. Looked at the manga section in my local bookstore and its enormous. Going to pick up some Death Note books and see if its as good (or better as some claim) as the Anime.

Great series, but I don't think they've released any volumes here in america.

Soul Eater is another great one, though I've only seen the anime.

Elfen Lied is good as long as you can handle some pretty fucked up shit.

I would recommend my most favorite manga of all-time, Battle Angel.
(Or GUNNM, as it's known in Japan.)

Just be sure to start with the original series, which is in collected editions now. If you start with the 'Last Order' stuff you're going to be seriously confused.

Battle Royale,Genshiken and Love Hina are the only 3 i've ever read fully,not a big Manga fan but enjoyed them all.
