View Full Version : WWE Rates 25 Masters of the Mic

Fox

WWE.com has rated the top 25 talkers of all time. Take a look:

25. Captain Lou Albano
24. Rick Rude
23. Santino Marella
22. Ted DiBiase Sr.
21. The Miz
20. Jesse Ventura
19. Triple H
18. Paul Heyman
17. Edge
16. Vince McMahon
15. Billy Graham
14. Mick Foley
13. Hulk Hogan
12. CM Punk
11. Randy Savage
10. JBL
9. Bobby Heenan
8. Dusty Rhodes
7. John Cena
6. Jake Roberts
5. Chris Jericho
4. Ric Flair
3. The Rock
2. Roddy Piper
1. Steve Austin

JBL over Punk kind of bothers me. Layfield was always fantastic on the mic, but he's never entertained me or kept me glued to the TV the way that Punk has been able to do.

The inclusion of Paul Heyman definitely makes me happy. The inclusion of The Miz is confusing. I think they should have put Raven in there as well. His work in ECW and WCW as the psychotic, dark, twisted leader of the Flock was incredible.

The most glaring missing person IMO is Kurt Angle. Angle has always been an awesome talker, and he had that charismatic factor right out of the gate with his "My 3 I's" gimmick. Very few rookies are that comfortable, entertaining, funny, and intense on the mic - HELL, very few veterans are as good on the mic as Angle either.

Your thoughts?

Raven sued them so i get why he isn't there, can argue Angle should be there if fellow TNA guys Flair & Hogan are but again i get why. At the end of the day its a WWE list so its always going to be skewed, look how high Cena is compared to Heenan or Heyman.

I bet this is a work.

Everythings a work, except Jerichos suspension of course.

No HBK?

HBK was never a 'great' talker.

I can only remember one good HBK promo, and that is Bret Screwed Bret. And that was hashing out a 10 year old angle.

Cena has never been good on the MIC IMHO.

Edge? Not sure why he is on there. Im a fan but dont think he was ever amazing.

SANTINO?

Hanso Amore

But thinking about it, I cant think of many others to put on the list. At least that fans would know. and are on good terms with the WWE.

santino there and not jim cornett, an piper is pissed he is not number 1

Keith

I'm gonna have to go look at some Captain Lou Albano videos to see why he's in this list. I only remember him as The Headshrinkers' Manager.

Fox

HBK may not have ever been a charismatic talker on the same plain as Austin or Rock, but he's consistently strong. You never have to worry about an HBK promo getting awkwardly silent or him stumbling or even him being boring. His work with Jericho during their World Heavyweight Championship feud showed how strong he is on the mic.

I'm more surprised about the inclusion of Triple H. Anyone who survived the Triple H reign of terror on RAW during 2002-2004 knows exactly what I'm talking about. How do you make a master of the mic list when you open RAW with horribly long, boring, tedious, pointless 30 minute promos, every week for 3 years?

Keith
05-27-2012, 12:42 PM
I believe HBK is worthy of being in this Top 25 list. Anytime he was a heel, he was gold on the mic. Go back and watch some of his promos back in 1997, and he was getting a lot of heat.

Also, when he had "The Heartbreak Hotel" he was very good.

I'm not saying he should be #1, but to include Edge and not Shawn?

#BROKEN Hasney
05-27-2012, 12:46 PM
Edge being up there was a bit of a headscratcher. Not bad by any means, but shocked he's on the list.

List is invalidated by the lack of "Above Average" Mike Sanders anyway.

Bill Regal always gets snubbed on these things and he has always been pretty incredible on the stick. Surely better than a guy like The Miz, who just took Jerichos character when he wasn't around.

CSL

pretty good list, no real contentious points. Pleasantly surprised to see Billy Graham, JBL and Jake where they are

He's just praising the perfect beaner gimmick. Lying, cheating and stealing out of laziness.

If they thought they could get away with it, they'd have them on lawnmowers or something!!

CSL

Keith
05-27-2012, 05:31 PM
Also, Jerry Lawler was always pretty good on the mic as a heel. So I thinki he should've been in the Top 25.

And Ric Flair should've been #1.

Neither should Cena and Miz.

CSL
05-27-2012, 05:42 PM
don't see a problem with Cena and Miz being on there. Cena's probably a bit high but he's the top guy of this "era", not surprising

and dronepool, JBL is on there because he's fucking excellent with a microphone, check out anything of his from after he became JBL

cool, I'll youtube some promos of his.

Yeah, I don't get The Rock being on there either.

Emperor Smeat
05-27-2012, 08:57 PM
Hogan is a bit of a shocker at #13 and not even in the Top 10 or Top 5.

Cena and The Rock are probably the closest to Hogan in terms of the style and yet Cena is a lot higher than Hogan even though he's weaker with promos than Hogan.

Even Macho Man is higher than Hogan and while he was amazing on the mic, he didn't have the same kind of consistent power Hogan could generate with the crowd.

No Bobby Lashley?

Puzzled at people being surprised by JBL's position on the list. Loved JBL and really miss him even to this day...and let's be honest, his wrestling wasn't what made me a fan.

He was gold on the mic, be it being a comedy figure for the face or selling a match. He used his intelligence and made you want to see him getting beat.

The only reason he made his surprising and shocking transition from Bradshaw to JBL work was because he was SO good on the mic. Doubt many others could have sold the character as well as he did, especially considering how fans remembered his character from before.

Dunno what is wrong with JBL. His promos were amazing, and his commentary after retiring made Cole enjoyable for the time being. And I still believe Austin is the absolute best talker ever so pretty good list imo.

Terry Funk should get some cred as well.

Mick Foley's "Anti-Hardcore" promos in ECW were probably some of the best mic work in the history of wrestling. It's too bad it didn't happen in a bigger company with a bigger audience.

JBL "talked" his way to a 9 month title reign.

Amazing feat. He was the goods. He went from Career Midcarder to big time name on his verbal skills alone.

His talking is what made him a main eventer. His wresting ability never changed, it was when he was given a "stick" that he made it big.

Hogan should be ALOT higher.
