Is it just me, or was there something a lot more interesting going on with Regal and Eugene last night than what JR & The King were selling?

Let me explain: When Eric came over to tell Regal how a loss by Eugene would free up a roste spot, Regal didn't give the typical vilainous cackle. he looked over, but there was some doubt in his expression. A look of guilt, almost.

Then, right before the match, Eugene hugs Regal, and the camera goes to his face, and Regal again looks guilty, but then gives one of those "OK..I hate this, but I gotta do it" looks to the camera.

Then, during the match, his interference was just a weak attempt at a leg trip, and he even looked away while he did it..like he felt bad.

Now, the entire time JR is yelling and screaming about how dishonest Regal is and how hes pretending to be concerned blablabla...but I think that there is something else going on: A) Regal is a fantastic actor as wrestlers go and B) Down the road, Eric Bischoff is goin to make Regal choose between Eugene and his own career, and Regal is going to go all Darth Vader in Return of the Jedi and choose Eugene and throw EB into the heart of the DeathStar.

(and this great moment will have lost some of its impact because the announcers are too stupid to pickup on "subtle.")

Anyway...do you agree? Am I crazy?

A month ago it looked like the dumbest thing ever. Right now, the Eugene character is still a little iffy, but as he's being played, and with his interaction with Regal (Great chemistry, as mentioned), he's actually got a lot going for him.

That doesn't make me thrilled with having a Superstar that's essentially a pisstake on the mentally challenged, but it's a lot better than I expected...Then again, I expected the Necro Gimmick, part Deux...

I agree. I actually expected him to help Eugene and defy Bischoff, but I actually was disappointed in Regal when he went for the trip! I'm sure we'll see a lot more about this next week.

The crowd loved Eugene! Amazing. Just a month ago people were saying this is the worst thing WWE has ever done. I think the chemistry with Eugene and Regal is really great.

Its not the worst thing they've ever done, but it still sucks for Dinsmore

And I agree with the thought that Regal will eventually come to love Eugene and stick up for him against Eric.

The whole point is that its supposed to be subtle, thus JR and King aren't going to be screaming about it. If they did then it wouldn't be subtle anymore.

They are letting the angle play out naturally and not forcing anything to happen quickly, which is very good. Announcers shouldn't be pointing out the small parts of angles that aren't obvious (ie King talking about how Evolution is going to break up every week)

It's odd, I suddenly find myself waiting to mark out for a Regal face turn and ready to be all pissed off if he does end up turning his back on Eugene - the hell? I haven't felt like that since the Bulldog almost turned face in 97.

William Regal is an awesome heel. I think that week after week he should try to cost Eugene his match but fail everytime. I just can't see Regal being a face

Regal is just an awesome actor period. It's subtleties like that that makes all of this great and makes this angle at least slightly pleasant.

Palpatine: If Luke loses the match tonight, he'll go home, and the Empire would have an open spot on its active roster again....

Vader: Luke, are you nervous?
Luke: A little bit...
Vader: You shouldn't be nervous. YOu're going to be living your dream. Besides, I'll be right there by your side.

Luke hugs Vader

Luke: Thank you!!!

You know, I kinda picked up on something like this watching the training session with the two. By the end of it Regal seemed genuinely impressed with Eugene's ability.

Personally though, knowing Regal's passion for playing the heel, it seems to me that chances are more likely that Regal will realize Eugene's potential, and try to explain to Bischoff that he could be useful to them if they could utilize his ability. Example:

Face X is feuding with Heel Y. Heel Y appeals to Bischoff for aid, and Bischoff and Regal convince Eugene that Face X is a "bad guy" and Eugene proceeds to aid Heel Y against Face X. Face X refuses to open up against Eugene and loses matches because of it. In the end Eugene realizes what is going on and proceeds to go up against Heel Y, and/or Regal.
