View Full Version : I Was Somewhat Bored So I Made A Wrestling List #2

Said I'd probably do another one of these SPECTACULARLY SUCCESSFUL threads at some point. The order of business for this one: Best Pairings. As in 2 guys that get put together in any circumstances and usually come up with excellence in the ring. I picked 7 because I wanted to pick 7.

Based off of personal preference and knocked it out in like 15/20 minutes so I'm bound to be missing some I like more etc so point them/your own out, tell me why I have great/awful taste, why I'm right/wrong/ordered incorrectly etc (just put any vids under spoiler tags so the thread doesn't make some people's computers explode) etc etc.

DISCLAIMER: Wasn't actually bored here, was going to make a thread about best pairings anyway so figured I'd do it this way

-------------------------------------------

7.John Cena vs. CM Punk

http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lnyb4bomFl1qblmnp.png

Always good but really kicked off from MITB onwards. The modern equivalent of any "classic pairing" from the past.

6.Rob Van Dam vs. Jerry Lynn

Yeah they were mostly spotfests. But I've never enjoyed watching spotfests that aren't based around ladders, cells or chambers more than what these two used to do.

5.Sting vs. Ric Flair

http://www.wwe.com/f/styles/ep_trending/public/video/thumb/2012/03/19950904_sting_flair.jpg

Almost went with the obligatory Flair/Steamboat series here but I always preferred Flair/Sting, Flair's cowardly, heelish ways in comparison to Sting's rah rah good guy babyface fire added more than simply "here's 2 great wrestlers, who's the best?". Flair throwing chops, babyface no-sell/fireup, Flair begs off was never done better or more effectively than with these 2. Not to mention pretty much everything they ever did was rather good. Except that last Nitro. We can just pretend that never happened. And that TNA never existed.

4.Undertaker vs. Recent WrestleMania opponents

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FFwI-jtA2H8/Tt6lhWLagAI/AAAAAAAAFxc/8iSiLhNd8vg/s640/the-undertaker-wrestlemania.jpg

It's no secret that a lot of Taker's early Mania matches ranged from "decent" to "awful" and this continued pretty consistently as the streak went on (I mean, from Triple H to Flair to...A-Train?) However, around the early 20's of WrestleMania, when real emphasis started to be placed on the streak, the matches continued to improve to the point where they should now almost be the guaranteed main event because simply put, no matter who else is booked elsewhere on the card, you simply can't follow The Undertaker at WrestleMania. "Follow THAT" almost seems like it was created for him now, to the point where he's almost saying that to himself since I don't think anything he ever does from now on will be able to top Triple H/HIAC/WM 28.

3.Steve Austin vs. Bret Hart

http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m9dk76NEdC1qzx70zo1_500.jpg

The brawler vs. the wrestler. Brash vs. professional. Trailblazer vs. tradition. The matches that bridged the transition from the "good old boys up in New York" to "Attitude". Consisted of some of the most iconic and original images, angles and matches ever and cemented the legacy of one man and kickstarted another. Hugely underrated in the history of professional wrestling.

2.Shawn Michaels vs. Anybody On Planet Earth

http://www.iolani.honolulu.hi.us/SummerSchool/surfnet/98/HULL/SM.JPG

It's Shawn Michaels. He's had great matches with Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Vince McMahon and a 93 year old Ric Flair as well as expected brilliance with pretty much everybody else (including my favourite match ever vs. Mankind at Mind Games 1996) He's the greatest professional wrestler of all time.

1.Chris Jericho vs. Rey Mysterio

http://www.wwe.com/f/styles/photo_large/public/photo/image/2009/05/10347318.jpg

Consistently brilliant everytime they came together for 15 years with their matches even getting better the more time went on. Some guys you absolutely never tire of seeing work together and these two probably top out for me. Jericho in my eyes is a bit overrated in the grand scheme of things but his versatility is at it's absolute most useful here and he's never ever looked better. I can watch Rey every day of the week against just about anybody given that he's the best in ring performer of the last 20 years not named Shawn Michaels but nobody brings the best out of him like Chris Jericho.

(INSERT JERICHO VS. REY FROM EXTREME RULES 2009 HERE BECAUSE IT'S THE BEST MATCH THEY'VE EVER HAD AND NATURALLY IT'S NOT ANYWHERE ONLINE)

Great list. Shawn vs. Anyone yes, but if I had to go with one person, I would go with Bret Hart. The real life heat made the jump to TV/Promos and just added to their already awesome in-ring chemistry.

I always thought Edge/Cena was a good/underrated pairing.

If we're going old school, Dusty Rhodes/Flair was the shit. (I was really young and most people here probably weren't alive, but go be a student of the game if you haven't already.)

almost went with Cena/Edge at #7 but the February RAW match with Cena/Punk basically "solidified" it for me

Could make a case for Austin/Rocky but Bret/Austin is probably the right choice for him. Overall I love the list, especially the inclusion of RVD/Jerry Lynn. Looked forward to everyone of their matches. Even the one in TNA 2 years or so ago, when RVD was flagging, showed what great chemistry they had.

Cena/Umaga and Orton/Mark Henry were "surprisingly" great pairings.

Also, despite it being yonks since i saw the matches (so I dunno it could just be the kid in me talking), Triple H/Foley for me is one of the best pairings.

Great list.
I'd be tempted to do bret/mr perfect over bret/austin though

I should have said "two picks" for Ric Flair pairings and neither is Steamboat.

If I had to go with one guy for HBK, I think I might go with Taker or Jericho.

Orton/Christian was pretty badass.

Angle/Mysterio were always great together.

no doubt his matches with Jericho were great and Undertaker even more so, going back as far as 1997 but if I had to go with just one guy, I'd probably say Angle.

Orton/Christian was pretty badass.

I always liked Orton and Triple H together until the Mania 25 main event. Before that, it seemed every match they had was really hot, I remember a random RAW match from around 2006ish and the crowd just ate up everything. Orton/Christian was something tho, especially given it was essentially all either guy did for 3-4 months and they kept it interesting, which is pretty much the ultimate challenge.

Great list, more things on the forum like this please!

Austin/Bret is a great choice, that Survivor Series 96 match never seems to get talked about but it's fucking brilliant.

Y2J/Rey is a great pick for number 1 just for the sheer volume of matches they had together, and it's good to see Rey get some props for his in ring work as well.
