I was watching a video on Youtube today that dropped a bomb on me

in Final Fantasy 8

Laguna and Raine had a son, Squall who went with Ellone to an orphanage and grew up without their parents. Squall grew up and fell in love with the daughter of Lagunas first love Julia.

I must have missed those when I played through no less than 5 times between 1999 and 2008.

Blew my fucking mind. It all fits and makes so much sense. Not sure how all the hints were missed when I played through. This is why Squall is always Laguna in flashbacks. Also makes a very sad tale.

this thread is for us all to post things we missed, or revelations we never knew at the time.

Kinda obvious, no offense.

Also I miss FF8. That was my Final Fantasy.

Been a looong time since I played through FF8, don't really remember it too much. I think I did start to play it again a few years back and the first time it flashed back to Laguna I was like "Ohhhh yeahhh.... this is a thing". Didn't even remember Laguna. I think I probably forgot about him again until now.

Ff8 is the best. But yeah knew the Laguna and Squall connection. Kinda want to play it again but don't think I have time for games these days.

I would find time if they rereleased with voice acting. Ain't got time to read or bleed

In the past it seemed like everyone chirped about FF9 being so good and they would put the order as FF7 then FF9 or FF9 then 7 but I always favored FF8 above FF7. I love Tactics.

I'm still hazy about the Cloud/Zack/Tifa/Aeris thing.

That would ruin it for me. Hate voice acting in "rpg" games. Basing solely off of my experience with FFX, because I don't think I've played one with voice actingbsince.

Dunno, just prefer the audible medium in this stage of my life. Loved ffx. The fact that it was voice acted wasn't a problem is was just badly acted.

Still I prefer a cutscenes with voice over text and video only cut scenes,

There's, like, one quick exchange in FF8 where it's *kinda* explicitly stated that Laguna is Squall's father. It's in Esthar, after you meet with the President (spoiler) and Kiros and Ward have a short convo w/ Squall. Something like "You look like your mom, it's lucky that you didn't come out goofy looking like your dad." It's very plausible to miss if you breeze thru those couple of text boxes.

VIII = Favorite game, period. Enough that I have a damn tattoo from it

I want to make this thread go to 100 pages, so: anybody heard anything about Squall being dead the whole game? :shifty:

What's your tattoo of? Pic? I really wanted a griever tat when I was like 17 but never got it. I'm not a gamer at all but I love ff8 despite not playing it for like ever.

Will def check out that squall's dead shit when I get home. More than happy to talk about ff8 for 100 pages, although I might be pretty rusty on a fair few details.

Yeah I've read that squalls dead theory before and it does make a lot of sense, very much a Jacobs ladder situation.

Look up the theory about rinoa being ultimecia it's pretty good as well

Jura

Back then I really wanted an actual Gunblade even though I knew it wouldn't really be practical and a Griever necklace.

A friend bought me that necklace as a birthday present years ago. No idea where it is. Would never wear it but good to have I guess

Rinoa being of the Witch line was fairly clear wasn't it?

Hanso Amore
05-18-2014, 05:05 PM
It was clear she was a sorceress not that she would become ultimecia which never hinted at but the theory pans out

Hanso Amore

This is why ultimecia uses griever as a gf

Kalyx triaD

I figured Ultimecia was a force like Phoenix that uses vessels throughout time (like their nanny), so I imagined Rinoa was just the next in line.

Major spoilers, kids, it all makes sense in context.

Spoil away. Some of us (and by that, I mean just me) just could never get into it. I bought the damn thing on launch day, and I've still yet to make it out into the world. Partly because its... boring. 7 drops you off in the story. 9 drops you off in the story. 8 begins with you milling around a school. I hear nothing but good things about the game, but just never clicked with me to want to keep playing.

However, Triple Triad is superior to Tetra Master. And I love 9, but the card game there is too damn "random". Triple Triad not only requires more placement strategy than blind luck, but actually keeps track of the decks so that you, in turn, can have an idea of what you may be up against and plug in a deck from what you possess to win. In Tetra Master, the decks you go up against are randomly generated, and most of the time, they seem to "spawn" just the right valued cards in the right places to have a high probability of beating, or at least tying you.

Loved the school bit in FF8

Kalyx triaD
05-20-2014, 01:07 AM
Yeah I also dug the school bits. I really did those little exams and monster hunting things. I wish they expanded on that.

The 'season finale' of disc 2 is still one of my favorite moments in gaming.

Lock Jaw

Can't remember what it was. Was it the parade bit? Loved the parade bit. Think that was probably earlier, though. Probably first disc end, I think.

The finale for disc 1 was the parade. Disc 2 ended with the cluster fuck involving the other school.

You need the game or you need the spare time for playing the game?

Griever Tat just seemed too much of a thing some sort of "poser" would have. Garden Insignia was a perfect fit

Need the game.

Plus something to play it on, I suppose.

Well besides the obvious PS1/PS2 + hard copy option there's a few other ones I can think of:

ePSXe program for PC + FF8 iso
ePSXe android app + smartphone/tablet + FF8 iso
FF8 for Windows (torrents)
FF8 on PSN
FF8 on Steam for $11.99

There's actually a standalone FF8 PC game and then one that was released on Steam in December. I don't know the differences but the one on Steam is probably better. They also have FF3 and FF7.

If only I had a PC. That is how I played it back in the day. Don't know if I could play it on a console. Hate the drawing magic bit.

First time I played, I'd actually stand around drawing 99 of everything... Then finally I was just like "nuts to this" and would just edit my save file to have the max so I didn't waste my time.

On my second play through I drew the shit out of everything so I had more freedom to Junction my core team. And I only did that because a certain battle in disc 3 was virtually unbeatable with my party's set-up, and I couldn't go back into the explorable world to beef them up.

Before I stopped playing RPGs, that experience had me grinding the shit out of games the moment the open-world portion started, because I knew their would be bullshit somewhere sometime down the line that would make the work pay off.

I just bought this on steam....goddamn it Ill never have time to play it
