Okada probably gonna win, but they may throw everyone a curveball and give it to Styles.

Would be a shock if AJ won considering its been a long time since their main champion and/or an American won.

Think Bad Luck Fale might be a bigger curveball to win. They've been slowly pushing him as a new star.

That German from Okada onto Styles is a thing of beauty. I need that played in slow-motion with "Ave Maria" playing.

Way too early for him to win the whole thing, but I certainly expect a big win or two from him. Maybe against Kojima or Tenzan.

I liked the transition into the tombstone piledriver too. Fucking Okada man. So smooth.

ACtually think the Shibata/Nakamura match was even better. Just a great, hard hitting slugfest.

Shibata is tremendous. I predicted a Nakamura/Shibata final last year and was totally wrong, so glad to see they did it this year.

But yeh, Nakamura/Styles final, Shinsuke wins, AJ loses the title back to Okada, Nakamura Vs. Okada at WrestleKingdom is the way to go.

I would love a Shibata or Ishii surprise victory too...

Wait so the last American to win this was Vader in 1989? No way styles wins.

Never followed this because I hate jap shit wrestling but I might give it a go, reading about it sounds interesting.

Round Robin Style with two blocks. Two points for a win, one point for draw, none for a loss. After they wrestle their block, the winners of the two blocks face each other. Two man sack race held on consecutive Sundays in case of a draw.

XL
07-23-2014, 06:58 PM
How long does it go for? Does each guy face every guy in the block once or twice?

Emperor Smeat
07-23-2014, 07:05 PM
Recent ones have been around 2 weeks. This year's is around 3 weeks probably because of the injuries from last year and more wrestlers being involved.

I'm somehow a mark for Nakamura and I haven't even seen too many of his matches. I hear that he is likely the favorite to win this whole thing. The idea of Nakamura defeating Styles in the finals, Okada defeating Styles for the IWGP Title and then Nakamura facing Okada for it seems like a fairly logical way to go.

I liked the idea they went with at Wrestle Kingdom earlier this year when they put their IC Title on Hiroshi Tanahashi. It'd kind of be like if the WWE gave John Cena an IC Title run. Would love to see the WWE do this and have a guy like Cesaro win it off him.

Honma Vs. Shibata may be my favourite match of the tournament so far. I love Shibata, but I so badly wanted to see Honma win that match, it was just a work of art.

Stayed away from this thread over the weekend because I didn't want to spoil any results for myself. Nakamura/Ishii, Honma/Shibata, Styles/Suzuki and Tanahashi/Ishii is all must see stuff. This tournament is fucking incredible. I like that there is less parity in this years G1, last year they went a little overboard keeping everybody even and I didn't like that - the World Champion shouldn't have the same number of points as Yujiro Fucking Takahashi.

So it basically comes down to Tanahashi and Nakamura (for the love of God please not Fale) in Block A then Okada and AJ in Block B.

I think Nakamura/Okada might be too big of a match for the Finals and not at the Tokyo Dome, so I can see Tanahashi vs. Okada in the Finals and AJ/Nakamura for 3rd place.

Shibata still has a tiny, tiny chance, but unlikely. Guessing they made the final four clear this year to try and sell tickets to the Dome as opposed to the anybody can win aspect of last years. Prefer this years by far booking wise.

At the start of the tournament I figured Nakamura/AJ final, with Nakamura pinning AJ, Okada winning the belt back by year's end, and the battle of Chaos at WrestleKingdom. Am starting to question that, because Tanahashi is still the biggest star and draw, and him winning is just as feasible as anything else (Tanahashi Vs. Styles at WK for the title is quite appetising).

Ishii looked severely hampered in the match with Shibata, understandably so. Staying away from all results until I see the show from this point. Exciting stuff.

10. G1 Climax – Final: Kazuchika Okada beat Shinsuke Nakamura (23:18) with the Rainmaker.

* The golden boy of New Japan, Kazuchika Okada, won his second G1 Climax in three years today before the biggest crowd to ever attend a G1 Climax final, 18,000 fans turned up at the Seibu Dome to watch the ‘forbidden’ confrontation between CHAOS top two Shinsuke Nakamura and Kazuchika Okada in the G1 Climax final. It was an epic match that showed the world class standard of New Japan and saw Okada have to used an unprecedented three Rainmakers to finish off Shinsuke. Okada told AJ Styles he’s “next” but plans to wait until the 1/4/15 Tokyo Dome show (announced today) to cash in his title shot for AJ’s IWGP Heavyweight Title. He (and Gedo) also praised Shinsuke for a good fight and suggested they do it again in future.

* Hiroshi Tanahashi showed he is still a major player in the G1 3rd place match, pinning IWGP Heavyweight Champion, AJ Styles. AJ lost to Okada, Naito and Tanahashi in the tournament to show he isn’t unbeatable, but remains champion.

* New Japan signed a formal agreement to work with Jeff Jarrett’s new GFW promotion during the show. Then later on Jarrett revealed himself as a Bullet Club member after hitting Tanahashi with a guitar. Scott D’Amore also joined the Bullet Club, which continues to expand.

I think I'm going to watch that finals match between Nakamura and Okada. Do you think Styles vs. Okada will be the Wrestle Kingdom main event, or will Tanahashi/Nakamura/Naito win the title before then?

Nakamura vs. Okada with the title on the line seems like a perfectly fine premise. Bullet Club being challenged by Tanahashi and allies also makes sense. But do you want to run so many rematches your biggest show of the year?

I hate the Bullet Club anyway, they stopped being a good act when AJ came in (not AJ's fault, but the unit just took a drastic turn for the worse with all the lame crotch chopping and doing 90s catchphrases like backyard geeks), so the Jarrett and D'Amore additions don't do any more to hurt things.

I was PISSED watching the show last night that Nakamura lost, but what a thrill ride of a match, just excellent stuff near the end.

Honma should have gotten at least ONE victory. I do love that his intro video is him missing the top rope headbutt again and again.

Superb tournament all around.

Just wanna throw this out there - this week I'm going to take a gamble on the podcast and talk exclusively about the G-1 Climax and New Japan, since there are a good few people talking about it in here, and I don't want to start a new thread to clutter shit up. So three questions to you all:

1) Who do you think was the star of the G-1 Climax?

2) What was your favourite match of the G-1?

3) What do you think New Japan's direction will be between now and Wrestle Kingdom?

Elaborate as much as you like, I'll be reading your thoughts on the show and crediting you (leave a real name if you'd like), but this one will be a lot of fun to do as a massive New Japan fan.

If you wish to post any other thoughts on the New Japan product to talk about on the podcast, feel free.

1)

-AJ Styles. He had tremendous matches throughout the tournament and definitely rose his stock in the company.
-Tomohiro Ishii. Cmon. He had 2 match of the days AFTER SEPARATING HIS SHOULDER

2)

-Toss up. Nakamura vs, Ishii, Styles vs. Suzuki or Okada/Nakamura. Honorable mention to Nagata/Ishii.

3) It kinda has to be all of the top NJPW stars against the Bullet Club right?

Seeing as how I go in and out of follow puro every few years, besides how amazing New Japan has been the last couple years, is anything of note going on with All Japan and NOAH? I haven't followed either of them probably since Misawa's death and I haven't seen anything significant of note come from them on social media, etc. in a long time.
