On this weeks Squared Circle Gazette podcast we decided to dive in to WWE.Com's Top 50 Talkers in Wrestling History list that they put out a while ago, since it caught my eye as an interesting topic of discussion. So for those interested in promo discussion, below is the link as we talk about the rankings, who should be higher or lower, who shouldn't be on at all, and some of the names that were inexplicably left off. A pretty fun show, check it out and let me know what you think~!

think Punk would comfortably be in the top ten if he would still have been with the company when it came out

Punk should be way higher. Heenan should be number 1. I love the Hulkster but he wasn't a top ten talker. And Macho is too low. That is my opinion and if you use it on your podcast it will cost you Five (5) American dollars!

nawww son, Hogan's promos were the shit "back in the day"/until like 1991, would def have him top ten. But yah Savage should have been higher

Shisen Kopf

True. I think I'm jaded by his, later stuff "Brother, dude, slamming Andre the Giant, etc" seems like that's all he says now.

Punk should be like 151.

warrior should have been top 10. No sting? No Scot Hall?

Gonna probably upset a few peeps here but I wouldn't have ranked Flair in the top five, and I've always thought Dusty Rhodes was super overrated as a talker.

Eddie Guerero was worthy of a mention as was Jim Ross the latter ok not a wrestler but neither was Bobby Heenan who should have ranked higher imo as should have Hogan. Missing out Sting was just criminal though.

Sting I can see the argument against - he wasn't a great promo for most of his career, he only really got great in TNA.

Punk is an awesome talker, but all time history of the business I don't know about Top 10.

As debated on the podcast, Savage is the hardest one for me to position - I love Savage as a personality, he's so much fun as a promo, but he's not as versatile as a guy like Lawler or Flair.

The Miz should not be above anyone on that list.

Nick Bockwinkel and Gary Hart should be much higher on that list.

I wouldn't have Cena in my top 20 either.

Sting had great charisma and was good, but he wouldnt be Top 50 all time based on his WCW career. Feel free to bring up a blowaway promo or two you feel should elevate him, its an interesting debate.

Agree with Seth wholeheartedly about Bockwinkel, he's utterly fantastic.

Ric Flair over the Rock?

Also Pillman could be a lot lower as Mic Skills go he was ahead of the game

What Would Kevin Do?
04-25-2015, 11:58 AM
10. Chris Jericho
9. CM Punk
8. Dusty Rhodes
7. Bobby Heenan
6. Mick Foley
5. Paul Heyman
4. Stone Cold Steve Austin
3. Roddy Piper
2. Ric Flair
1. The Rock

I would have changed things just a little bit. I honestly think Heyman is top 5, and easily the best non-wrestler on the mic the sport has ever seen.

As a pure orator Heyman is absolutely incredible. His post-Mania 30 Raw promo was an utter masterclass, and he's had so many good ones. They Heyman/Heenan debate is a fun one, I'd love to hear the argument for the Brain as I love him too.

Based on entertainment value i would go
1. Heyman
2. Heenan
3. The Rock
4. Cornette
5. Flair
6. Austin
7. Punk

Gets a little more difficult after that

How is JBL that low? How is Scott Steiner even on the list at all?

Heenan is definitely Top 5. Angle should be around top 20.

Rest looks about right.

As is Triple H. But it's a WWE.com list so I'm not too surprised.

Not sure about Scott Steiner on this list. Definitely think that Gino Hernandez deserves to be on it. He was great on the mic.

To say that Tazz is 5 spots ahead of JBL is laughable. JBL was way better than 43rd btw.

It's also laughable to say that Edge was a better talker than The Million Dollar Man.

Was thinking Ventura should be higher, but who knows

I'd agree with that, the WWF stuff is obvious, but his promos alongside Adrian Adonis in the AWA were just brilliant. Great voice and was always very topical.

His more recent promos about the government's involvement in 9/11 are enough to put him at #1.
