All of my DVD's don't work on my PS2. All the games work fine but every single one of my DVD's just show up as 'Disc read error'. It's not the DVD's because they work fine on the PC. Have any of you had similar problems?

When did you get your system? When they first came out or like within the last few months?

I got it in November 2001 which is about a year after they were released here in the UK.

Typical disc read error problem with the ps2. To fix it you have to open up the ps2, open the top of the disc drive and move a little white wheel. It usually takes a couple of tries to get it to play both your games and dvds again, but it works.

Full instructions on how to do this can be found here

Me and several of my friends have had this problem a lot. They always get me to fix it for them. It's a fairly easy fix, the hardest part is finding a screwdriver small enough for the little screws that hold in the top of the disc drive.

Do you know how long the guarantee lasts for?

Or if you're not good at repairing things, you can send it in to Sony and get it fixed for free.

I did this a few weeks ago. If your PS2 is unfixable, they just send you a new one.

I appreciate the help AareDub, but I don't think I have the courage in myself to open up my PS2 and tinker with everything. I like Joey RoXer's idea but I think it only covers the US. Is there a UK number for that?

I've had problems with this as well. Mine was pretty bad though and I couldn't fix it. Other things to try: Once you've opened it up, use a q-tip with some rubbing alcohol and clean off the laser lens. If that doesn't work, you'll have to do some more digging. Underneath the laser is a very small circuitboard with two tiny screws in it. You'll be able to identify them b/c they're the smallest screws down there. Turning them clockwise will increase the voltage to the laser. A quarter turn should do it...half turn if that doesn't work.

I've had that problem as well. I'm glad I'm not the only one.

It's probably the most common problem with Playstations...that and the fan going out. Hopefully PS3 won't have these problems.
