I was wondering, what's the story behind WCW/Turner buying the NWA? I've heard numerous times that the NWA world title became the WCW title and that Turner owned the NWA. Why didn't he actually buy the NWA name?

Also, did the WWE obtain the NWA footage through the WCW buyout, or did they buy that separately?

Basically Turner bought Jim Crockett Promotions in 1988 when Jim Crockett's company was broke. Although that promotion wasn't the entire NWA, it was the biggest part of it. Later, the promotion just became WCW because they didn't want to associate themselves with the NWA name. Kind of like TNA today.

I'm pretty sure the WWF owns all the Crockett Promotion NWA archives and the WCW stuff.

Back then there were so many different territories and most of them went under the NWA banner.

The NWA and WCW Titles are completely different by the way. Flair was the first WCW World Champion

Wasn't the future WCW World Title the WCW International Title (Big Gold Belt) when Flair was the NWA Champion in WCW?
