So, when I first saw this I started thinking "how old is martin sheen" then I quickly thought, if it was him, it would have his name in the headline, not a teaser to get you to click read.

anyway, RIP John Spencer.

Yep.

I wonder how the show will handle it, if the season was finished or not also how this may effect plans to do another 4 year run using either Smits or Alda as president.

RIP.

I believe this or next season were going to be the final seasons of the show anyway. I stopped watching a while back but I am curious how they will handle it.

Sad and tragic and shocking news. John Spencer’s “West Wing” character, Leo McGarry, had a major role in the new episode that ran against the “Survivor” finale Sunday night.

I’ve been a fan of Spencer since his Tommy Mullany days on “L.A. Law,” but his Emmy-winning work as Leo during Aaron Sorkin’s run on the series made for some of the best television I’ve ever seen. His jousting with Jed Bartlet and Josh Lyman and Sam Seaborn – oh, and British ambassador Sir John Malbury! – made me laugh so much harder than any of the sitcoms airing at the time.

One wonders how Spencer’s passing will affect the show’s scripting. McGarry is currently the running mate of presidential candidate Matt Santos (fellow “L.A. Law” alum Jimmy Smits), and we saw in the season-opening flash-forward – set three years hence – that Leo will be very much alive well after Bartlet exits office.

He was, by far, my favorite character on the show. I was flipping through channels on the tube today and I stopped to watch "Forget Paris" (Which John Spencer was in) for a second while I checked my email when I read that he had passed away.

RIP

:'( John Spencer was a terrific actor and he will be sorely missed. The first thing that came to mind was how horrible a case of life imitating art this was. Just last season, Leo had a massive heart attack and nearly dies, and now this year, he's apparently felled by the same affliction.

Rest in peace, John. Thoughts and prayers go to your family.

Now, I could be wrong, I remember that first episode and I was pretty sure Leo wasn't in it, because if he was, it would have given away weather or not he was VP.

I remember (charecter names) Toby, Josh, CJ & Will... I remember him refering to Will as a Senator or Congressman...

Maybe Leo was there, but I'm drawing a blank.

Leo was indeed in the "flash forward".

umm, wanna make a bet?

(of course, I only offer this bet after doing a search and finding a breakdown of the episode, which talkes about CJ. Danny, Charlie, Toby, Will, Kate & Josh being there and no mention of Leo, which would make sense because when Josh says "the president is here" it pans to a limo and shows feet).

I honestly couldn't remember, but did a few googles and found breakdowns with no mentions of him in that scene.

Kinda freaky how he has a heart attack on the show and now has on in real life.

Hero's been dead for 5 years. Now his spirit wanders the interweb, Modstigating freely.

Anyway, I don't think I've seen the guy in anythingelse, but he was a good actor and it was a good character.

The Rock & The Negotiator are the only two movies that come to mind, and TV shows West Wing & LA Law.

I'm sure he's done plenty of other stuff, that's all that comes to mind.

Leo was indeed in the "flash forward".

I stand corrected, article on cnn.com talked about him being in that scene and how they don't really know how to deal with it, but since it's a 3yr flash fwd they doubt the show will even be renewed for next season.

Also, there are 5 more episodes filmed with him in it, and they're trying to decide how to finish the season, they refrenced the Sopranos who used some CGI and standins when Tony's mother died (the actress).
