ie.

so yeah, last night, we were pre-drinking in my buddies' room, realized it was Friday so I turned the channel to SD!

*during the Randy Orton vs. Benoit match*

Buddy: I can't believe you watch this shit? It's so fucking boring

*during the Randy Orton/Booker T segment

Buddy: oh

Cousin: It's scripted right?

Me: Yeah

Cousin: So hy do you watch it?

Me: It's like any other show on TV. You like Law & Order, right? You think they just film that shit on the fly?

Cousin: Shut the fuck up, dude. Give yourself some respect.

Me: You like boxing, don't you? That's usually scripted too.

Cousin: OKAY! Give yourself some respect.

BTW, my cosin says 'Give yourself some repect' when he's losing an argument.

Yeah, I've always wondered why the scripted thing seems to cut people so deep. Movies and TV shows aren't real, but people still retreat into them without problems. I think that's something MTV will do to set themselves apart from the WWE. I can easily see them removing kayfabe from their show.

Me: Do you watch wrestling?
Friend: No (embarrased), It's so fake and the storylines are dumb. Why?
Me: Just wondering. Guess what PPV's on this weekend?
Friend: What?
Me: Royal Rumble
Friend: Really? (Getting all happy) Is Batista still the champion?
Me: (In my head: How the hell does he know?) Umm, no. You remember Edge? He's champion on Raw and Kurt Angle is champion on SD!
Friend: Really? How did Edge get so big...

...you know the rest.

It's funny though how he suddenly knew what was going on and was getting into it very quickly.

Just the standard "That's so fake/boring" stuff from my friends.

I remember 04 August I was at my friends pre-party and I put on Smackdown. He's getting ready...comes in, sees me watching wrestling..says, "you watch this gay shit?! who the fuck is that wannabe thug guy (john cena)? man this shit is gay, turn this shit off and let's go."

He used to watch wrestling back during the Attitude Era/nWo era.

The majority of my friends are wrestling fans, but for the few that aren't, I sometimes get "lol, wrestling" comments.

"Not real."
"Retarded."
"This isn't a sport."

I get lot of "you know it's fake, right?"
At which point they either get a "Oh realy? Wow, I thought it was real. Thank you so much for that. Piss off."
Or, if I'm in a good mood...
"O RLY!!!!!"

O RLY! LOL

I get the usual "Man, it's so fake. I watch UFC! It's REAL!"

And then I slap them. Hard.

But serously, I too have never understood why it being scripted bothers so many people. Never once has anybody in WWE claimed that what they were doing was real. As a matter of fact, they had that "fragmented into my spinal column" PSA where they kinda hinted at it being scripted, but still risky to try at home. I usually compare wrestling to Law & Order or Everybody Love Raymond. You know that Ray Barone is really Ray Romano and that those really aren't his brother, wife, and parents, but you watch anyway, because of the scripted hilarity.

It usually shuts them up. Better than the slapping, I say.

It's one of those things that people are almost afraid to get into. When I first went out with my g/f I told her to give wrestling a chance. She grudgingly did...and now she's a John Cena mark.

So yeah, maybe that wasn't such a smart move. I say leave non-fans be. :p

Most of my mates kind of just accpet it and move on as most of them were fans during the attitude era (or more specificaly nWo/Goldberg era as we got WCW down here in NZ).

Some diss me a little bit but you just put on a good match and they kind of get into it. My one for blooding newbies is usualy Styles vs. Joe vs. Daniels or if its someone with a short attention span a Goldberg match, his match with Raven for the U.S. belt is a favourite of mine.

Friends to me: Harri, it's fake!!

Me: How do you define fake?

Friends: Something that's not real.

Me: So how is wrestling not real?

Friends: Because they know what's going to happen.

Me: So...? I don't see how that doesn't make it real. Tell me, how do you do a fake chokeslam, or a fake tombstone?

Friends: ... :?:

Me: Thank you very much. ;)
