Let us begin our 7 month wait until the 2006/2007 season begins and do what every NFL fan likes to do: speculate. Well, there's not much going around at the moment so I'll just throw this out there.

<a href="http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/sub/mockdraft.html">Here</a> is a mock draft for 06, no idea how reliable this guy is or whatever but there's a nice amount of info on the guys beyond the obvious Bush/Leinart fanfare. It was written before the Senior Bowl tho.

-edit- nm they've updated now

As far as the Jets go, most talks are that they're going after Young, Leinart, Bush if available at 4 , and if not then D'Bricksaw Ferguson. Not to crazy about that, but 1st round OLs have a history of working out well, so I dunno I guess that'd be fine. The line was really hacked up this year avec no Mawae or Fabini ect.

THE ARIZONA CARDINALS might, possibly, that is, if they can stay healthy and avoid injuries and not play like extreme shit and maybe have an o-line or a decent running game and some quick corners WILL WIN THE NFC WEST

OssMan

Why?
What

The Giants biggest hole this year was by far the secondary. Tye Hill & Antonio Cromartie are two very good looking cornerbacks who are likely to fall to the number 25 spot. Brent Alexander was the most consistent guy in the secondary and he is like 36 and led the team with 4 INTs but is pretty much on the decline so Greg Blue would be a nice fill in. He doesn't have to start immediately but if it comes time when Alexander has to go then Blue would be a good replacement. There is no intimidating presence in our secondary right now but Blue could be the guy who scares the opponent cause he hits like a machine. Although he does seem to get lost in pass coverage and we can't really afford that.

Thomas Howard, Ernie Sims both fast OLB and Carlos Emmons probably won't be back next year and even if he is I think we proved that we don't have much depth at linebacker. Reggie Torbor, Nick Greisen, Chase Blackburn COULD take over an OLB spot but I don't think they are good enough to start for a saeson. Manny Lawson a 2nd-3rd round guy with same qualities as Sims and Howard but doesn't have great instincts or anything. I'd rather we focus on getting Blue/Moss in 2nd/3rd round.

Giants lack a solid #3 WR right now. We have Tim Carter who is really fast but drops everything and Jamaar Taylor who is not as fast. David Tyree is there and I hope he is resigned but he needs to be more of a special teams player than WR. Sinorice Moss gives the Giants a fast young receiver at #3 who would really "complete" the offense.

Any of these could change with a free agent signing though

I agree with pretty much everything that AssMan said. I doubt Emmons, W. Allen or Green will be back on defense. We need better play from our secondary without a doubt, but I don't know that additions are what we need. We have the secondary coach from Kansas City so we'll see. If we can get Corey Webster to step up, and Will Peterson to get through the season uninjured our starting secondary looks solid, with Peterson and Webster on the corners, Brent Alexander and Gibril the Thrill at the safeties I think we'll be okay.

At linebacker, I think Emmons is up there and the injuries are a sign of his soon to be departure, although I'm not quite sure he will get released this year. I think Barrett Green should be released because of injuries and falling out with Coughlin, too much money going to him to not play. Out of our other LB's, Pierce will return to anchor the middle, I can see Emmons and Torbor playing the outside, with Greisen and Blackburn providing depth (Blackburn looked promising in his short stint and Greisen is very solid). We should probably keep Kevin Lewis, who has been in the system for depth, if we have to get rid of someone here.

I agree with AssMan on what he said about the #3 WR, only thing I would add is that we could use a stud LT. Luke Petitgout is solid in terms of blocking but he is dumb as fuck with penalties and for that he should get the boot.

OssMan
02-06-2006, 11:43 PM
An LT would be nice but Ernie Accorsi has already announced that the offensive line will not be focused on this offseason. Yeah Petitgout is retarded with penalties but his blocking is fine. The line really meshed this season and if you look at the 04-05 season you will see how much of a huge upgrade it was. No need to change anything there.

Gonzo
02-06-2006, 11:50 PM
No there really isn't, but I honestly wouldn't mind them using a draft pick or using cap space to bring in a LT to scare Petitgout into not being a total moron all the time.

We need secondary help, although I don't think it necessarily needs to come through addition or subtraction, but better coaching and scheming.

We really need better depth at WR, as you said, and probably some young LB's to mold into a starting core.

Yeah I am kind of surprised Bing came out. I figured he would have stuck around for his senior season and came out as a top 10 pick next season. He will be another steal in the draft IMO. I am curious to what the Patriots are gonna do, there is a lot of different directions to go.

Mandalay Bay early lines to win the superbowl next year.

Colts 4-1
Seahawks 5-2
Patriots 5-2

Then were the Steelers and either Cinci or Denver, I forget what the line was.

Who do you see the Pats taking? The only thing that comes to mind for me is maybe a safety. I know Rodney Harrison will probably be back, but a season ending injury at his age will probably slow him down quite a bit. I'm thinking someone on defense though that can provide some depth with the insane amount of injuries the Pats racked up this year.

1st round...

LB is my first thought, simply because even though he keeps getting better with age, McGinist isn't getting any younger and with the move of Vrabel to Inside, I could see them going for an OLB.

Saftey might also be a choice, however that depends on how Harrison looks, they still have Eugene Wilson at one safey, I could see them more likely to take a vetran saftey via free agency.

CB is also possible, although Ellis Hobbs really stepped up this year and there is talk of Ty Law wanting to come back to finish with the Pats, Law had like 10 picks last year, but from what I've seen/heard had a horrible year. That being said, he played about 20lbs over his playing weight because he didn't have a full off-season due to injury... I'd take an in shape Ty Law and the Jets will probably cut him, because I think he gets a 10mil bonus?

So yeah, LB (probably OLB) would be my best guess for round #1.

Dark horse, DE, why? If they think they're going to have problems resigning Richard Seymor, they could go for a DE "just in case".

Random bits and pieces

Surprised nobody has mentioned Martz taking the Lions OC job yet. Ok ok so it's the Lions, but still. You have to think he could get at least *some* improvement out of that group.

Bobby Petrino apparently turned down $18m over 5 years to coach the Raiders because his kid didn't want to move. Hire a nanny or something, jeez. Art Shell might be back in the job. Which would be kind of funky.

Houston have taken up the $8m option on Carr. Hellooooo Reggie Bush. Or tradedown, whatever works.

Mr. Monday Morning
02-16-2006, 02:17 PM
Yeah he supposedly asked for like a $10m raise or something ridiculous. Is he in denial about his knee being in pieces or something?

IMHO Warner > McCown btw. McCown reminds me of Plummer with less ability. Then again Ryan Leaf could have a good rating throwing to Boldin and Fitzgerald all day.

I dunno, if they can pick up like an Edge James, improve their O-line a bit, and keep their defence healthy, they might make a run at a wild card spot. Adrian Wilson was insane this year, should've gone to the pro bowl.

Jesus Shuttlesworth
02-20-2006, 07:17 PM
Reggie Bush is gonna need someone like Davis to be succesful. He isn't a 30 carry a game back. He split carries in college, he'll need to split carries in the NFL. Especially if he'll be returning punts, playing in the slot and stuff, would be a lot to ask of him.

Supreme Olajuwon
02-20-2006, 09:41 PM
I really doubt he'll do any kick returning since Jerome Mathis was a Pro Bowler as a rookie KR this year. Davis isn't a change of pace back like White was at USC. Do they really need to pay over $40 million for 2 part time players?

AlphaBean
02-21-2006, 02:03 AM
If they can run the ball, it's more than worth it. Two home-run threats running the ball, splitting carries so you can't wear either of them down? It would really open up the passing game. LOL.

The Chargers letting Brees test the market tells me either they are convinced that Rivers is going to be better or Bree's shoulder is seriously destroyed and rather then see him go all Pennington on them, they'll take there chances with Rivers.

There's some kind of technicality which means they can't apply one of the tags to him, I think. I've probably got this wrong but best as I can remember they can't transition him since they franchised him last year, and if they transitioned him this he would be making less money than he did last year, which there's some sort of clause to prevent.

Something like that.

Jesus Shuttlesworth
02-21-2006, 12:39 PM
Well I think the Chargers are going to see what other teams are willing to offer for Brees then match it probably. Unless they know something we don't know about his shoulder. They could put the franchise tag on them if they wanted but I don't think they want to do it again because it would be around 10 million dollars for a guy with a bum shoulder.

Jesus Shuttlesworth
02-22-2006, 01:29 AM
I doubt they have really set their price, they are probably just saying that. I bet they just don't see anyone giving Brees 10 million a year, which is what he will get if they franchise him, so they'll wait for somebody else to offer him something then sign him if they think its worth it. Brees and his agent probably think they get more or a long term deal since hes has had 2 good years but nobody will do that because of what happened. Especially after this Chad Pennington stuff going on. Either way Chargers have a pretty good insurance plan in Rivers, he's never been a starter in the NFL but Carson Palmer wasn't a starter when he was named the starter either.

Gonzo
02-22-2006, 12:55 PM
Well if Brees can come back and be somewhat like he was before, he may be able to do something in Oakland.

Lamont Jordan isn't too shabby, Randy Moss isn't bad either when he feels like playing. I don't know about their offensive line but they have Joey Porter too, he is alright. Might be able to do something with that, because Kerry Collins is not a franchise QB at this point in his career.

I don't know though, all depends on how well he comes back from his injury.

I would love to see Brees go to Oakland and tear up the Chargers every year though, because I have a friend who is a diehard Chargers fan.

AlphaBean
02-22-2006, 05:41 PM
Moss plays as long as his teammates play. He will be amazing if he has a QB who can throw it deep. If Brees can't... Moss is going to be forced to play shallow, where he's not at his best.

And Collins made Moss look like he was past his prime. That's annoying... but it would be great if we could get Moss back. Moss/Nate/K-Rob... unstoppable.

Nah I like him. I'd really like to see him back and play for the Patriots. He didn't burn any bridges or anything when he left, so theres still a chance I guess. I just heard hes asking for 10 mil up front, then 7 mil a year. Or maybe the other way around but either way its a lot of money for a cornerback, especially in the NFL now. Cornerbacks arent as valueable because they don't shit to the WR without getting a flag.

AlphaBean
02-25-2006, 01:07 AM
My point is, he was a nickel back at best in 05, but got lots of picks despite being horrible in coverage. He'd be great in a cover 2 defense I would imagine, but if he's showing his age, it's time he stopped trying to "man up."

Getting 10 picks on a lottery team despite giving up lots of TDs means dick.

"In 2004, the Lions tied Rogers' playtime bonus to 2005 instead of the more conventional 2006 way just in case of the unlikely event that there was no extension to the collective bargaining agreement. Now there is no extension -- and no extension in sight -- but the Lions are in a position every team wishes it were."

<font color=goldenrod>Random Giants news:

-Brent Alexander retired, which kind of sucks considering he was the Giants' leader in pickoffs in 05...hopefully Shaun Williams can go back to old form in '06.

-Jeff Feagles is mulling retirement, but the Giants really want him to stay and they are considering letting Feagles skip practice to spend time with his family in Arizona during the week.

-Barrett Green and Jason Whittle were also released. Green was a waste of money...and Whittle isn't a huge loss, though his versatility made him a great backup option on the O-Line.

-I would not be shocked at all to see the Giants take a run at Ty Law. I'd gladly take him now that Clements was tagged.

-The team is working on a long term deal with WR/special teamer David Tyree. He's a very valuable asset.

-One last bit of news, apparently the Giants had a long talk with some guy named Ngata who is entering the draft. He is a DT and is like 335 pounds or something. Huge guy who can clog up the line...though I don't know much about him and picking a DT with the #1 pick doesn't seem like the best idea after William Joseph in 2003</font>

Don't need to say anything about DE, everyone knows the situation there, but I think William Joseph can "live up to the hype" I guess and Kendrick Clancy is a really good run stuffer at DT. Yeah Ben Watson ran a 4.4 with a max of like 565 or something ridiculous

Tight ends are some of the most athletic dudes on the planet, big ass motherfuckers that can run.

The thing about Carpenter is, there is 8 linebackers that could go first or second round. Its just gonna be perference over who wants who. Patriots will definetely be picking up a high quality linebacker in the 2nd round eitherway. I'd like to see Carpenter, but anyone from that list of 8 would be fine with me.

There's Thomas Howard (he's ranked ahead of Carpenter on CBSSportsline) too, he wasn't that popular during the season but he had a strong week during the Senior Bowl and he ran a 4.4 at the combine.

1998: Charlie Batch 15
1999: Donovan McNabb 16, Anthony Wright 16, Aaron Brooks 17, Daunte Culpepper 15
2000: Tee Martin 11, Jarious Jackson 18
2001: Mike Vick 20
2002: David Garrard 14, Woodrow Dantzler 17, Antwaan Randle El 17, Rohan Davey 17
2003: Seneca Wallace 12, Brad Banks 13

This year Reggie McNeal, Brad Smith, and DJ Shockley all below 20 too.

Yeah, the Vikings have been the highest on Edgerin all along, even before Shawn Alexander was signed. I'm interested to see how the Vikings turn out, because if we do end up trading Duante we are going to need to make some other drastic moves as well.

On another note, Corey Chavous said he would like to stay in Minnesota now, but isn't sure if it will work out, because of age and all. Last season he wanted out when we got Sharper, so that's a good sign I guess.

I did see this on ESPN.com in an article about Arrington.

"The Redskins could very well see Arrington again. He said he wants to sign with an NFC East team.
"I want to come back and walk in FedEx Field once a year," he said."

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2355921

Don't know if he has a particular team in mind or what, or if this means that other teams in the NFC East are showing interest so who knows. Barret Green is gone from the Giants and Dat Nguyen is gone from the Cowboys so who knows. Trotter and Arrington again in Philly I don't see happening, didn't seem like it went well in D.C. because of the types of players they are. I don't know, I'm not sure what Arrington's deal was in Washington. I never followed it too close but I will say that if he comes to New York with a reputation for being tough to coach one of two things could happen: 1.) Coughlin reigns him in because he is a hardass or 2.) Arrington makes the papers with more drama because he resists Coughlin's methods, which is more likely to me.

I don't really know if I want Arrington, although our defense would probably be better off for it. I don't want him staying in the NFC East if he isn't coming to New York, who knows. NFL.com wire reports

GRAPEVINE, Texas (March 8, 2006) -- Labor peace was restored to the NFL when the owners agreed to the players' union proposal, extending the collective bargaining agreement for six years.

There were no further details on the agreement, including whether it includes expanded revenue sharing.

The vote was 30-2, with Buffalo and Cincinnati, two low-revenue teams, voting against it.

Free agency, put off twice by the protracted negotiations between the owners and players, now will start at 12:01 a.m. ET on March 10.

"It was a good compromise," said Jim Irsay, owner of low-revenue Indianapolis. "We're happy with it -- 30-2 is a good vote."

As a player he isn't bad at all. I've heard various things such as he doesn't play to the scheme as he should, likes to run around making tackles putting himself out of position (where he shouldn't be, in the scheme). Seems to me like there was a lot of bitterness from both Arrington and the whole Redskins organization, so its tough to say if Arrington is one of those hard coaching cases.

If we did pick him up, and he just didn't fit well in D.C. and would be cooperative in NY it would be awesome. Arrington and Pierce would be ridiculous (they played together in D.C. I believe), plus Carlos Emmons would be sick too if he could stay healthy. Even if Emmons went down as much as he did last year, Greisen is a very solid backup who can play all the positions. We have Reggie Torbor who is fast and showed flashes last year. Chase Blackburn who was a rookie last year had 11 tackles in his first start when we had injuries to the starters. We brought in Kevin Lewis (who is solid, can play all the LB positions) who played in NY before, knows the system but I don't know if he would be retained.

lol Stima now you have me salivating at the possibility of that LB combo. My dad thinks Arrington is a stud, I can only imagine him going nuts if we signed him.

A league source tells us that the salary cap under the extended CBA is expected to move to $102 million in 2006, and $109 million in 2007.

It's an increase of less than $8 million in 2006 over the cap under the prior CBA, which provides far less of an additional bump than previously anticipated.

1996: 9-7 (no playoffs)
1997: 8-7-1 (no playoffs)

2000: 8-8
2001: 8-8
2002: 7-9

Ravens signed Mike Anderson and re-signed Jamal Lewis

-edit-

Eagles signed Darren Howard

Redskins signed Archuleta

Apparently the Vikings' tender to Steve Hutchinson contains the proviso that he must be the highest paid member of the team, so if Seattle wants to match it and retain him, they are going to have to spend a *lot* - possibly more than they can afford. If he does go we'll see how much of a difference there is in both Seattle's and Minny's running games respectively.

Bengals signed Dexter Jackson. I like it. It was apparently either going to be him or Lawyer Milloy and well, fuck Lawyer Milloy.

So where are the supposedly cap-poor Redskins coming up with the cap space to get these deals done?

They freed up $4.4 million a week ago as part of the deal that made linebacker LaVar Arrington a free agent, and they shed several veterans on the eve of free agency to create more room. Likewise, it was reported that they planned to convert $13.5 million in roster bonus payments into guarantees, which would then be spread over five years.

And don't forget about the extra $7.5 million in cap room that popped onto the books as part of the new CBA.

Our guess is that these new deals will leave the 'Skins close to the $102 million ceiling for 2006, and that there will be more tinkering with contracts in order to free up more money for more signings. Eventually, they'll need cap space to sign their incoming rookies.

Also, Snyder is richer than God, and not all of the money they get is against the cap.

And as per Randle El: The 'skins know he's an amazing slot WR, but probably an average at best #2, so now they have a sick 3-WR set. And Patten couldn't finish last season, and wasn't a slot then, either. But then Patten catches the reverse, stops, screen to Randle El, bomb to Moss... it's possible!

And I'm holding out hope that Culpepper will be a Viking next year. :) It would be stupid to trade him, even if he wants to be traded... for fuck's sake, at least talk to him. He's not trying to pull a T.O., he got burned and doesn't feel wanted. It's a bridge that can be repaired. It can. :wavesad:

I hate the Redskins with a passion, but they're going all out.

Drew Brees was signed to a 7 year contract worth $90 million.

They've also worked out a deal to aquire TO, exchanging with Philadelphia all of their draft picks.

The Redskins are also reportedly closing in on a deal to sign David Givens for a 5 year deal worth $20 million.

Finally, LaVar Arrington has reportedly been paid $5 million dollars by the Redskins to man up, and is closing in on a deal with Washington for a 6 year deal worth over $50 million.

Also rumored is that the Redskins have come to a word agreement with Bill Gates to aquire Microsoft for $40 billion. With all of these signings, the Redskins have still yet to exceed the cap limit, and it is reported that they will next pursue kicker Vinateri with a contract offer of over $40 million.

...Bastards. :shifty:

I like the move to get depth at the CB position, especially since Will Allen is more than likely going to get released. The signing of McQuarters makes me wonder if we will even keep Will Peterson with all the injuries he has had.

Taylor is a piece of garbage, last time I heard anything about that guy he was facing the possibility of lots of jail time. Dunno where that went.

<font color=goldenrod>Giants also signed some safety named Quentin Harris....who was Arizona's special teams gunner the past 2 years....this better not mean anything about Tyree

Chad Morton also got a 4-year deal to pad out the special teams for the long term. Tim Hasselbeck got a 3-year deal....which isn't bad but I was hoping they'd get a more proven backup like Fiedler in case Eli has a terrible game

Eric Moulds has also officially asked the Bills for his release.......I'd like to see the Giants take a run at him if they still have the cap room. If necessary get rid of Petitgout.</font>
