Trial could begin later this year

Alabama's Supreme Court has given the go-ahead to the lawsuit filed against Sony, Take-Two and US retailers by relatives of police officers murdered by a Grand Theft Auto fan.

A trial judge refused to dismiss the suit, and the defendants have been given no leave to appeal the decision. As a result, the trial could commence later this year or some time in early 2007.

However, the defendants do have the option to launch a challenge over whether the Alabama courts have the power to try the case - which could mean further delays.

The lawsuit was filed by the families of two police officers and a dispatcher who were murdered by 18 year old Devin Moore in June 2003. Moore pled not guilty by reason of mental defect, but was convicted of the crimes and sentenced to death. The plaintiffs claim that Moore trained to become a killer by playing Grand Theft Auto.

Their case was initially presented by anti-videogames campaigner and lawyer Jack Thompson - but he withdrew from the case last November following accusations that he had violated legal ethics.

Jack Thompson is one of the biggest douchebags I have ever read about. When I read he withdrew from the case, I was very happy.

Ok, so somebody here is gonna have to kill a bunch of people and claim that his fanhood of Jack Thompson forced him to do it. That'll take the heat off of videogames for a while and the rest of us will have slightly less inconviences when it comes to entertainment. Who volunteers?

....

....

..... Nobody?

Ok, we're gonna have to pick somebody then. Obviously I can't do it because without me we nobody will be able to pull off phase 2 of the operation, Codename: "Play more videogames while the goat's in prison". Hmm...Savior's pretty important. They'd blame Shadow's antics on drugs, so that'd backfire the plan. Well, it looks like the Indifferent whatever guy has to do it.

Get out there and save videogames. Don't worry. We'll fight for your amnesty afterwards or play more videogames in your memory or something...

Number of people who played GTA and didn't kill anyone: Thousands.

Number of people who played GTA and killed someone: Less than 10.

You don't have to be a mathematician to see that the game is not explicitly to blame here. There are other factors at work, and this is just another ridiculous witch hunt on the content of video games because people who do not have the mental maturity to differentiate between reality and fantasy manage to go to extremes and cause mayhem and/or death.

GTA "trained" this kid to be a killer? Come on. You fly planes in the game too, but that doesn't mean I'm anywhere near qualified to hop in the cockpit of a jet.

Lets blame a computer game rather than the 18 year old shall we?

It certainly taught me not to crash a plane mitch.

It taught me that if pilots had to control their planes with keyboards, nobody would want to be a pilot because it is too goddamned frustrating.

Anyone ever watch Boston Legal around here? Last week they had an episode where there was a suit because they alleged some sort of game was an addiction, and this kid died because of an addiction. I'm waiting for Thompson to try this case too. :D

I once went on a tour of an airplane, and I swear the pilot was using a PS2 control for take off and landing.

Yeah the next thing they'll say is the 9/11 terrorists practiced on planes by playing GTA.

The guy has a point. I mean, I played hours of Star Wars Battlefront, then I went out and toppled a Galactic Empire. The game trained me to work laser sniper rifles, so I was able to pick off stormtroopers with frightening accuracy.

Then, I stole a speeder bike and ran over an Ewok.

Here's a hilarious way to prank your friends.

YOU: Hey, friend, what's the name of that fireball that Ryu threw in Street Fighter?
FRIEND: Hadoken?
YOU: What? I didn't hear you.
FRIEND: HADOKEN!

And it makes a big fireball, 'cause yelling hadoken makes fireballs...

Wow, that was a long way to go for something that wasn't funny. I'm so very sorry.

What a gay. Its stupid, that Grand Theft Auto hasn't been blamed for carjacking, yet it has for murder.
