So I'm in Best Buy recently and bought a wrestling DVD. The guy at the checkout line looks at the DVD and gives me the mother of all smirks like "you fucking loser, I can't believe you still watch this crap!" and slightly chuckles as he hands me the DVD in a bag.

Fuck that guy! Seriously, since I know a security camera somewhere would capture this, I feel like drinking a 5th of Old Crow and going in there again wearing a "It's Still Real To Me Damnit!!!!" T-shirt. I'll buy another wrestling DVD and go to his register. When he smirks at me again, I'll thumb him in the eye, pull him over the counter, give him a crotch shot followed by the figure four. "Whoooo, WWHHOOOOOOOO!!! Check that out fat boy! WWWHHHOOOOOOO!!!!!!!" Then I'll blade and Flair Flop onto a shopping cart.

This guy's attitude is why I don't have any actual 3 dimentional friends to talk wrestling with and never EVER mention that I watch wrestling to anyone. Christ, I feel like a freak. Are we freaks? Should we be out growing this? Do you get strange looks buying stuff or wearing wrestling merch or shirts?

I definatly get strange looks. I always have when it comes to getting wrestling stuff. I actually do feel like a loser for watching and even coming to this website, but I still do.

I used to work in a grocery story and some old lady told me to go fuck myself and then she wanted to talk to my manager. I guess I shouldn't have told her we don't sell that certain brand of olives. She was obsessed with this one brand of fucking olives.

It isn't a large grocery store and I spent 20 minutes looking for that fucking brand of olives, and we didn't have them. I asked her if she had any other brand of olives she would like instead and she was hell-bent on those olives. I told her I would take her to the manager and talk about placing a special order for them and she thought I was being sarcastic.

Yeah, this is true. Hell, sometimes I'm embarrassed at myself when I sit through stupid shit WWE dishes out and keep coming back. My roommate and I have lived in the same place for over two years and he comes home every Monday night after work and I'm on the couch usually watching Raw. Two years and not ONE word has ever been said. Usually uncomfortable silence mixed with avoiding as much eye contact as possible. I think the only time he ever attempted to look at the screen a while back was when Doink the Clown reappeared on Raw. That was the last time he's come near the TV on Monday nights.....ever.

No, mainly because I rarely buy wrestling DVDs at a store, I usually get them online. And when I DO buy them at a store, It'll usually be with at least one more thing. Once I slipped Forever Hardcore into a Walmart order.

Most times I buy anything wrestling related I get a look of indifference, as if the cashier couldn't give a fuck less. I got chatted up about ECW once when purchasing a DVD, but that's the occassion that was out of the norm.

As far as outgrowing wrestling goes, fuck that. I still like it to this day, regardless of how others view it. When I don't like it anymore is when I'll stop watching, and not a day sooner.

This thread reminds me of a few months ago. I had to go with my grandparents to St. Lawrence University because it was my Grandfather's 50th Reunion, and I went to a few of the meals.

At one of them, we started to get to talking about what I like, what I'm doing, etc, and my grandfather blurted out that I like wrestling. Now, to give your a perspective on what I was dealing with here, no one at the table was under 70 and they assumed it was sumo and/or amature. I then had to drop a few names (Hogan and Austin), and my grandfather, who has taken me to every event I've been to (including the Supershow this Monday, as I need a ride and he can sort of get into it) dropped The Undertaker (I swear to you I would think TakerLover is his other bastard grandson) but that was pretty uncomfortable. Not because I was a wrestling fan, but because I was a wrestling fan among a bunch of old people who think what the media thinks of it.

Xero, maybe it's just the Wal-Mart's in Southern CA then. That's where I usually go to buy toilet paper because I can check it out myself. Maybe it's just me (and probably is), but there's something uncomfortable about having a woman cashier hand me my asswipe. :shifty:

The great thing about being "the customer" is that you can look that guy in the eye and say "What the fuck are you smirking at, faggot?" And he can't do anything. I love talking about the fact that I'm a wrestling fan.

"Watching wrestling with my family, albeit my older brother and my little sister are no longer fans, really made a strong connection among us. I try to make it a point to watch it every Monday because it's with my best friend's younger brother. He's highly autistic and doesn't really get out. It also helped me to talk to my dad. His dad was a fan back in the days of Haystacks Cal- nevermind, you wouldn't know the name anyways."

At this point, the person asks if I know it's fake, and I have one of two things to say about it...

"Yes, I know it's fake. I don't want to watch people really get hurt. I know it happens but I'd rather see a really crappy fake punch than a real one landed. That's why I don't watch boxing or cage fighting. You think I get a kick out of two people seriously trying to hurt each other?"

or, and I did this one last week....

"WHAT!!!!!!! NO WAY!!!!! IT'S STILL REAL TO ME DAMNIT!!!!!!!" (and walk away)
No, I don't think I'll be getting in the girl's pants, but I really don't want to catch some nasty STD from her anyways.

When it comes to buying merch, I no longer care.
"So, is this action figure for a little brother or something?"
No, it's for me. I'm a fan of the company so I'll buy the merch if I want to, buy the CDs, buy the books, etc. I want to support the company.

In closing, fuck everyone.

That's very true. It's true with all trends and fads. Which pisses me off.

Other than sitcoms from the 60s/70s/80s (they get shown on UKTV Gold, a british channel showing really old shows.) TV absolutly sucks*. Big Brother, Lost, Survivor etc. I'd take RAW over any of the new crap we get now.

next time a guy smirks at you, ask him what his fav shows are. They'll no doubt be either Desperate Housewives, Will and Grace etc in which case he's the real loser or if he says Monday Night Football, Cage Fighting and all these "Macho" shows then he's probably compensating for his overly small penis. Either way you get to laugh at him.

* with a few exceptions.

Secret Drakul Trivia: I prefer TV shows from the 70's/80's to newer stuff, specificaly sitcoms and more specificaly Ronnie Barker.

If you hate pro wrestling so damn much, then why do you watch it and post on a forum about it?

Okay I know you can't properly understand the English language so this will be lost on you but I'll say it for anyone else that cares.

WWE isn't pro wrestling. Aside from the God awful PPV's, there is no wrestling on the shows. This is a company that has banned the word "wrestling" from it's own TV shows. It's bad entertainment.

Wrestling marks are the fucking most stupid people I have ever seen. If you don't agree with them, you are a tool. There is this famous saying about "drinking the kool aid" and the wrestling marks (and I'm stressing the mongs that follow WWE and ROH like it's a family member) think if you don't believe what they do then you are "drinking the kool aid". If they had half a brain, they'd look at the numbers and see that they don't lie and the majority of people aren't the ones drinking anything.

I don't hate pro wrestling (although JamesSteele might be able to see into the future or something). When it's good, I enjoy it and when it's bad, I don't. Simple as that really. I am not "loyal" or a "supporter" of any promotion. I shouldn't be either. It's their job to entertain me to the point I want to pay money to see their shows and buy their products. They are doing a shitty job of it.

All the guys I like are either gone, injured or being so misused that I don't want to see them now. All the matches are the exact same thing over and over. How many times have Shelton Benjamin and Carlito wrestled each other on TV in the last 2 months? I'm bored. Right now I watch maybe 45 minutes of WWE TV a week and I caught about half of Impact last week.

I don't post bitchy comments to be bitchy. I do it because the product is so shit right now. And also to amuse myself when certain friggin marks have no concept of the real world that I feel like I'm cheating myself if I don't make light of it. Half of you can't even read. Okay you can read the actual words but half of you can't take it in. I'm sure someone like Kane Knight could explain that better than I could though.

This brings me to UFC. How come you don't see guys like CyNick here anymore? Because he is just like me. His love for wrestling has been fucking beaten down beyond belief and we found a new love - MMA. This is a sport that practically books perfect pro wrestling with next to no regular TV and yet they are pissing over WWE. How can a shoot company book better angles and characters than the biggest worked company of all time? WWE pay people to write TV and they fucking suck. UFC for example build a story about one man wanting to beat up another man and it draws  What a concept~!

I look at pro wrestling right now and I swear on my daughter that I could book both WWE and TNA so much better in a heartbeat and that's without bringing in one single piece of new talent or totally changing anybody's gimmick/character.

You don't like what I'm saying? That's fine. Don't read it or don't respond to it. You want to actually read the words I say, take it all it (and not think you are smart and try that "reading between the lines" bullshit) and challenge anything I've said? Cool. I'll debate anything I've said. I'll still post what I like and when I like.

Hooooooo fucking rah!

Did they start raping Eddie Guerrero's legacy and taking advantage of his family before I bought these?

I hated Vince since the Melanie Pillman interview on Raw. I can't forgive that.

Having said that, I wanted to have memories of Eddie Guerrero and Chris Benoit winning their world titles and Bret is just Bret. I'd still very grudgingly give him money if they had something I desperately wanted to see because they is no other way about it.

The thing that draws me to UFC wouldn't be the stories or the angles they've built up, but the contests themselves. I haven't watched UFC for long but I hope they don't go down the road of 'booking' matches.

That was exactly what they did. They knew they wanted to fight so they told them to coach the teams in series 3 and then they'd fight after it. And it turned into the biggest MMA PPV of all time. Not bad eh. But if you'd rather watch wrestling then crack on.

I would say it's sad how much some of you buy wrestling merch, the last thing I bought was either Ultimate Flair or Rise & Fall, and before those two it was WrestleMania X-Seven...but I have an old box in storage with so much ECW and old (pre-nWo) WCW stuff. But that was from before my freshman in in high school, so take that for what it's worth.

I guess my point is if they saw a 12 year old kid buying a wrestling thing they would think that was about right, if you are a 16-24 year old buying something it's kind of sad and give you the smirk, if you are over 25 and still buying wrestling stuff then I hope the fucker behind the desk gets on the loud speaker and laughs at your ass. Seriously, a 6 year old with Poke'E'Mon cards is kind of cute, and 16 year old with them has mittens buttoned on his jacket year round. See what I mean?

Just like this reality TV stuff, we expect smaller kids to shell pout money for stupid shit...hell it's their parents money. A 13-17 year old girl will think it's cool to wear some Paris Hilton shit, an 18 year old would only wear it if her other hoe outfit didn't show enough skin to please Suga Da D.

As for WWE merch, I'll buy a shirt if I like it and have the cash. Otherwise, all I've got are the following DVDs:

Mick Foley

ECW ONS '05

All I need is Guerrero and I'm set... unless an Owen Hart DVD is in the works.

Shit no one gives me weird looks when I buy wrestling DVDs, But that's all I buy. I only have the WM anthology, Jake Roberts dvd, ECW ONS 1&2, Rise and Fall of ECW, Forever Hardcore, Tombstone: History of Undertaker, Undertaker this is my yard, TNA Best of the X-Division, and TNA Best of AJ Style, Oh and WM 21 and 22. But I only have 3 wrestling shirts, Two I got at the house show I went to last year and one I just got offline from Shopzone.

But this one time this chick at best buy started talking to me and shit when I was buying the Childs Play dvd, Saying how it scared her and shit when she was a kid... That was the only time I got anything from a cashier. And besides at the Wal-mart by my house everyone that works in the electronics are huge nerds anyway.

Just backing up what ABT and others said before. I dont know why you would be ashamed of liking wrestling. Yeah it might be a bit embrassing but if you have friends that wouldnt like you because what you watch then you need to be around new people.

One time me and a beautiful attractive girl from work about what we are going to call our kids when we have them. I told her I was going to call him Christain after my favorite wrestler. She laughed and gave me a werid look but you know what i had sex with her like a month later. She didnt give a crap i liked wrestling but some people dont tell people they like wrestling because they are scared but I just dont understand it.

Hell me and my mate did Chris Jericho entrances when we entered the classroom when we where at School. Did we get beat up? No. Did we get paid out? A little but it was all in good fun. Did it affect out popularity? No not at all.

So people that are ashamed to say that they like wrestling should really get some confindence in themselfs and get back to reality.

If you think someone know writes one episode of Weird Science or Family Guy knows and reads comics religiously knows more about pro wrestling than me then that's your opinion.

Here's an idea - maybe I don't want to be a wrestling booker or writer. Maybe I'm happy working 8-5 every day with a steady pay cheque. Maybe I prefer living in London and being with my family.

Every single person I heard speak about the WCW invasion would have booked it better than they actually did. Every single idea I heard about booking Orton vs. Hogan is better than what they are actualy doing. Maybe these WWE writers aren't the creative minds you think they are.

Maybe you think to start thinking before you talk.

Oh and back to this DVD thing, you are mental if you think non wrestling fans have any respect for pro wrestling. And they are probably right considering the way Vince McMahon treats his own audience. You should know this before you have any pro wrestling dealings with them. The great thing about being "the customer" is that you can look that guy in the eye and say "What the fuck are you smirking at, faggot?" And he can't do anything. If you escalate him to the point of cussing back at you or even swinging on you, that bitch is fired, and you go home to satisfactorily watch your wrestling DVD.

Have some balls, man.
I can tell you from experience that the store employee isn't always fired in that case, and in some cases, doesn't even get as much as a verbal warning. (well, in the case of cursing back - I'd HOPE that someone working a job like that would have it together enough not to take the first swing, and if you swing first, guess what. Self defense.)

Anyway, I don't purchase very much wrestling merchandise, but when I do, I don't seem to have that problem.

Corkscrewed made the point in his thread that wrestling has always been full of shit, and it really HAS been. Nothing is different now. If anything, it's going back to the days of shitty ripped off gimmicks and angles that ran through the territories decades ago, only it's being televised globally.

What got you into wrestling? What promotion? If you say WWF, you weren't watching wrestling back then either, you were watching Sports Entertainment. You were watching gimmick vs gimmick, not wrestler vs wrestler. Same if you go with WCW, NWA, and really any other wrestling promotion I can think of.

What's your definition of "Professional Wrestling" Rob, because, since the 50's or so, it was always just another form of entertainment, not an athletic competition.

Cmon guys, WWE isn't pro wrestling. They don't even call themselves a professional wrestling company, they "make movies". I was listening to Cornette's SpikeTV conference call, during which he told a story about sitting in on a WWE agent meeting, and they debated what to call their wrestlers.

Again, define "Pro Wrestling" for me. It ain't gonna be anything without promos, blown-out-of-proportion gimmicks and gimmick matches.

I'll admit the WWE overly uses the entertainment and gimmick aspect of the whole thing in excess, that's not the issue. The issue is that you're saying that the thing in between the "entertainment" isn't professional wrestling? What is it then? They're using *gasp* professional wrestling moves and *gasp* professional wrestling holds. Must be something I'm missing here, but it looks like a wrestling match to me.

I don't remember saying it was an athletic competition.

For me, pro wrestling TV should be a combination of matches, storylines and gimmicks that make you want to pay to see the final porduct - the blow off match. WWE's matches are all the same and so if you have seen it for free, why pay for PPV's? The storylines are fucking beyond stupid. They have done nothing to build a real feud. The only one that comes close is Foley and Flair and I just don't have any interest in watching a 76 year old man wrestle now.

First, I just threw that in there as I was seeing you as the "no gimmick, all wrestling" type.

I completely agree that wrestling should be a combination of matches, storylines and gimmicks. And I agree that the WWE storylines are currently pretty horrible for the most part. However, the way I interpret what you're saying, the wrestlers should not touch each other and/or have a match (bar tag perhaps) with each other until a PPV. Which would result in a series of squash/run-in/promo matches. You can build feuds up without the wrestlers wrestling until the "first meeting", but you can't do that for every wrestler.

Some, like Carlito/Shelton for example, is a series of matches, and is being built up as such. Lashley/Finlay is an on-again off-again thing (although it may be gone by now).

All I'm saying is that you can't book everything "perfectly", it's not possible. At this point, yes, the WWE is struggling to stay afloat when it comes to their storylines, and God knows it's getting old, but to say there aren't any proper feuds happening right now is wrong.

Rob
07-31-2006, 12:21 PM
It helps when you have people booking who actually know about wrestling and not trying to make everything a comedy act or doing whatever they can to make Vince McMahon happy.

And Carlito and Shelton is one of the most boring things I've seen in ages. This feud has totally killed any momentum that Shelton had.

Eddie vs. Rey was shaping up to be a great pro wrestling feud. It was simple, Eddie couldn't beat Rey. It started out friendly then Eddie snapped on Rey, bloodying him and tearing his mask. OMG a feud that doesn't insult or intelligence, tell me it's too good to be true....

Well it was too good to be true, since they bastardized the feud by adding Dominic into it. We all know how that turned out.

Actually, the emphasis on entertainment is the point, and it's not particularly something that is common with pro wrestling as a whole. WWE strikes me more as being closer to WMAC Masters (Anyone remember that show) than Pro Wrestling.

Wrestling has always been part sport and part sideshow, but with Vince especially, it seems to have become part sideshow, part Hollywood. The sport element seems so underemphasised between the carnie elements and the TV elements as to be lost in the shuffle entirely. In fact, it almost seems like any wrestling that happens in World Wrestling Entertainment is accidental.
