I think I'd be too distracted by the over stylized way it's been filmed. I didn't really like Sin City for that same reason. It was a good story, but the fanboy moving comic book look just bugged the hell out of me. A Scanner Darkly just flat out pissed me off just looking at it.

If the story doesn't require it to be over-stylized, it shouldn't be.

I love taking USC's CTCS 466 class, taught by Professor Leonard Maltin. We get to see movies before they come out!

Anyway, this movie was AWESOME. I highly recommend every WC male to watch it, because it's a total guy movie. Lots of violence, blood, gore, incredible visuals (director Zach Snyder did an amazing job matching the graphic novel feel of the story, which is based off the Frank Miller comic). And even random nudity in the form of a love scene which came out of nowhere, even to me (and I hardly ever analyze films) and a sensuous dance by a beautiful "oracle" before she predicts the future.

Oh, and for the guys who want to convince the ladies to watch, just tell them they to see 300 really buff, muscular, totally ripped Spartans wearing little more than a cape and short shorts. :p For the guys who want to get the guys to watch... the Oracle girl is hot.

Anyway, this movie is absolutely gorgeous and everything I expected it to be. It's Gladiator meets The Matrix meets Sin City, and after watching it, I'd even throw in a little bit of Lord of the Rings.

Now, I will say that is EXTREMELY violent. Lots of graphic gore and blood and decapitation and impalement, so I wouldn't take the kids.

But for the guys... WATCH THIS FILM. :D

Oh yeah, and we had the director in class, and he pointed out something that I noticed as well. The film is aware of what it is. It doesn't take itself super seriously. It doesn't try to be historically accurate or anything. It operates as the cinematic form of a graphic novel. So there are some things that are intentionally absurd, but done so because it's fun.

Like Leonidas casually eating an apple after the Spartans destroyed the first horde of Persians. :D

The story itself is historically accurate, as is some of the dialogue even. I went to Wikipedia out of curiousity to find out certain thigns about it. Here's an interesting tidbit.. Before its release, critics and previewers hated it.

"At a press screening hours before the premiere, Erik Davis says that the movie was received poorly by critics. "It started shortly after the opening credits; small groups of folks began heading for the door. It got worse when the main villain appeared on screen and all the audience could do was laugh. And, yes, it ended when whatever was left of a packed house booed Zack Snyder's 300 as the end credits scrolled up the screen."

"Erik Davis heavily criticised the film, calling it "one of the most overly hyped films in history... a boring, fast-food version of better films, with better scripts, better acting and better battles. 300 men fought to defend their freedom but, in the end, 300 people (including me) wanted their two hours back. Good movie if you dont mind movies with little depth or character development, not to mention story. It's a great pre-game prep rally though for a script.
Also, a third of the film was done in slow motion.

And there was no point at all to the slutty, weak wife, and her vapid sex scenes.

But when you just wanna see action, then it delivers. So I didnt mind it, thought it was good enough, and it entertained me.

Do they know that 300 is a hollywood movie, and not a documentary. There are things expected to not be accurate, hell ever things that are accurate (Written) may not be accurate as you can't be sure of the authenticity of storys and history that was written and picked apart over several hundred years.

It amazes me how people can take this stuff to heart so much. I didn;t see a petition like this when Medal of Honor was released. Or when The Last Samurai was screened, both of which were historically inaccurate.

Have you even seen this Chris? Did you read the Iliad and then go on a rant about historical accuracy? I mean come on. It has NO political message. It's a fictional action movie. Nothing more. I'd say Medal of Honor should fall under more scrutiny than this movie should. With it's attempts to present itself as historically accurate and their villinazation of the Germans.

Again, this movie wasn't meant to be taken as a serious account of events. This was supposed to a bad ass action flick. And everyone who went to the theater should've seen that coming when they saw the Trolls, Giant, Gods, 20 story Elephants, and the plethora of other MYTHICAL creatures.

"6927. Maryam Atighechi- The movie was total propaganda... shame on you WB, to create a movie for the sole purpose of creating hate and racism on Super Gigantic Elephants. I don't see why people are complaining.. Sure it was a fantasy, non stop action movie with little to no storyline and/or charater development, but it never presented itself as anything but what it is.. I though it was outstanding.. As I Funky mentioned, Frank Miller's stuff is completly revolutionizing filmmaking.. The cg and green (or blue) screen work is amazing..

I loved it and want to see it again..

If they were going for a non-stop action movie with little to no storyline and character development then why was there so much time devoted to crappy storytelling and character development

This wasn't a non-stop action movie. half of it was devoted to the wife's shitty story. The action was good, but it was the same fucking battle shown 4 or 5 different times with increasingly difficult opponents. BORING

10,000 slow motion kills in one movie is fucking gaytarded.

If I wanted to watch a movie in slow motion, I'd buy a movie on DVD and hit the button to slow down the action sequences. Most of the visuals in the movie were signs of a lazy, uncreative mind, reused ad nauseum.

Yeah, I can't see how anyone would take the constant "freedom isn't free" line through the movie would be taken as a message.

Out of curiosity to anyone who's read the original Miller comic, did he actually laud this stuff?

On the other hand, anyone bitching about a war movie being propaganda needs to shut up. 90% of the genre is propaganda. Watch it or don't, but it's as stupid as complaining about blood in an action movie.

What? I was saying if you took the message of the movie seriously then you're a pretentious douchebag.

Jesus, it's based (loosely) on history from over thousands of years ago lol. Of course the ideals in it aren't going to be something we can fully agree on. Greeks were all about the faux democracy and being "free" people. It doesn't change the fact that the Spartans were inherently badass motherfuckers, which was the entire point of the movie. If you were looking for anyting else, you're a fuckwit.

OK, so I've now seen it. TIoE hits my thoughts on pretty much. I'm glad I saw it, and I'd even say it was worth the price of admission, I'd not watch it again however. Gladiator was a far better movie, for example. I didn't care for the characters in this thing. like the father/son thing. I didn't tear up when the son died or when the wife gave herself to the Senator dude. None of that was done in a manner that gave any impact whatsoever. Good enough movie for an visual action movie.

Think; 'inbred druids'.

The Spartans went to them for mystical advice. The advice he got was corrupted by the Persians. That's why only 300 went to battle. These elders said no war until after the August full moon... or whatever.

I dont think the movie was trying to touch anyone as much as it was just wanting to show a bunch of baddasses kill a motherfucker as brutaly as possible.
