View Full Version : Never heard Professional Wrestling defined this way...

an offshoot of "Theatre of the Absurd," in which characters engage in meaningless dialogue, repetitive actions, and incomprehensible behavior in order to demonstrate the absurdity of human existence.

Got that from Define:Professional Wrestling on Google.

Got to say, it's pretty spot on. Especially now. :shifty:

I don't know. It would have to be done with intent. Has Vince really become an intentional parody of his once "great" product, in which he seeks to display the futility of the human condition, rather than make his meaningless product seem meaningful?

Wrestling is pretty stupid if you think about it.

I think everyone with more than ten brain cells has come to that conclusion.

The trick is not to think about it, and watch it anyway. Who cares after all? Its a tv show, Vince can do wtf he wants with it.

I'd definitely qualify pro wrestling as theater, but absurdism? Absurdism is meant to promote the belief that human existence is pointless, and that searching for meaning in it is wrong. Somehow, I don't think that Hulk Hogan and Iron were taking a cue from Eugene Ionesco or the like.

If anything, pro wrestling is an offshoot of Italian commedia dell'arte, which uses stock characters, and relies on improvisation combined with pre-scripted spots.

(although it's funny to note that Samuel Beckett, the world's most prominent absurdist playwright, once lived next-door to Andre the Giant)

No Xero, unless he started this account a long time ago to "fool" us or summat.

Occasionally, there are legitimately stupid people on this board as well as the fake ones.
