View Full Version : YOUR Favorite World Champion - WWF/WWE

KayfabeMan
03-20-2007, 11:57 PM
Well, the voting is in YET AGAIN.

YOUR Favorite TNA / NWA World Champion was Ric Flair.

Ric Flair was also YOUR Favorite WCW World Champion.

AND Tazz / Taz, was YOUR Favorite ECW Champion.

Anyhow, on to our next bit of business.

YOUR Favorite WWF / WWE World Heavyweight Champion.

Same as before; you can vote based on whatever you'd like. Personal favoritism, the wrestler overall, the wrestler's title run, credibility, fan popularity / drawing power; whatever reason you'd like to vote for him. If you'd like to, elaborate on who you voted for and why.

I will make the list one that covers WWWF through today's WWE, including both WWE World Champion and WWE Champion as well. That will make voting tougher for some, but very cool overall and will make it interesting as well. This covers the Undisputed Title, etc. - so everyone's obviously included.

RIGHT NOW THERE IS ALSO A POLL UP FOR YOUR FAVORITE AWA CHAMPION - SO BE SURE TO GO OVER TO THAT THREAD AND PLACE A VOTE OVER THERE AS WELL

Jericho's pretty much my favorite wrestling performer all time and I wouldn't even consider voting him in this poll. But the criteria is entirely up to you he says, so whatever.

I still haven't voted yet, having a hard time making a choice myself.

Jeritron

Probably the hardest choice for me in any of the polls thus far, but for many reasons I made up my mind earlier and I can with complete confidence and pride say Austin is my vote.

Jeritron
03-21-2007, 12:15 AM
The one thing you can say about Jericho, is that ON PAPER his reign looks good. Beats Stone Cold and The Rock back to back, unifies 2 world titles, successfully defends against Rock and Austin at seperate ppvs, and loses to HHH in the main event of Wrestlemania....

too bad it was all executed and delivered terribly.

If Austin Rock or Michaels doesn't win this poll I'll be a tad upset.

Bret Hart.

I definitely had to go with the Hitman on this one. He just had fantastic bout after fantastic bout, and gave such credibility to the Championship. The gold eagle just looked like it belonged to him, and he really made you feel that it did.

Honorable mention to Bruno Sammartino, who was FANTASTIC in every single sense of the word. Definitely an overlooked superstar by today's generation of fans, and did a ton for the business.

I also was tempted to go with Austin, Hogan or Mankind.

HeartBreakMan2k

However, Billy Graham and Bruno Sammartino do get honorable mention from me.

Jeritron
03-21-2007, 12:23 AM
To me Rock eventually was on the level of Austin, but never as a champ. Rock certainly became his equal but I still think Austin was a better champion, had better runs and lent more credibility to that belt at a time when it needed it.

The Rock always seemed better not being champion. Something about Stone Cold made him look so much cooler when he came out stomping like BMF with the belt over his shoulder, be it the smoking skull or the normal winged eagle. It just fit, and he made that belt matter.

Who else voted for the Rock?

The Show Off
03-21-2007, 02:34 AM
Bruno Sammartino

He held the championship for 4040 days, that's a long ass time. Actually I would have voted for Austin because he was my favorite champion but for the sake of my grandfather who always gushes over Bruno, I'm going to put my vote for Bruno in honor of him.

My grandfather always tells me about how he was at MSG when Bruno lost to Koloff for the title and how you could hear a pin drop. I'm also voting for Bruno because lets face it he's the guy that the company was built around back when, if it weren't for Bruno Vince McMahon Sr. wouldn't have a business to had to his son which means no Hulkamania or Austin 3:16.

Sadly that's because he gets little to no mention on WWE programming, and even more sadly that's due to his refusal to associate with the McMahons. Definitely a class act though. :(

I voted Kane. An inepic title reign, but that reign has a lot of sacrifice and dedication behind it. Kane has been the best big consistent man performer the WWE has had in modern times, in my opinion. Hell, he could go down as the best ever. Of course, I'm also just a mark for the guy.

When I try to decide who is the greatest champion of anything I always ask who brought the most honor to that title. When looking at the NWA and WCW title I can say hands down that Flair was the man that holds that honor. Likewise when I think about the AWA title Bockwinkle is easily the man who brought the most honor to that title. Same could be said for Taz in ECW. So when I think who brought the most honor to the WWWF championship there is really only one option, and that's Bruno Samartino.

If Rock was the special guest referee for the match and had been appearing occasionally over the years, and Austin was off in hollywood for 4 years and cut a promo via satelite, people would view things differently.

Austin's legacy is certainly always gonna be there, but sometimes I feel it's being forgotten or being dumbed down.

I mean, Rock was never Austin, as much as I love The Rock. And after Austins neck injury he came back and some people seemed to forget. Rock getting the match against Hogan at WMX8 always angered me a little.
Especially looking at what they had Austin doing with his career before he quit, which I would have done too at that point.

Now it's like the man who saved the WWF and was the biggest draw of all time, at least over a 2 year period, is forgotten for a guy who he was instrumental in getting over.

The One
03-21-2007, 02:33 PM
Whoever voted or Edge and RVD did it out of sheer markishness with nothing to back up their opinion other than fanboyism. Not that that's wrong. This is YOUR favorite I suppose, but I doubt they have anything that resembles proof as to how they could be in any world considered the best champion...

The man put over Sid, and then he was the one who dropped the belt to Steve Austin, with Mike Tyson as ref, in one of the most historically hyped matches, at WrestleMania, with a broken back. Granted he didn't want to put over Bret, but who the hell would want to lay down for a whinning little punk bitch Canadian in bright pink clothes? I understand what you're saying, but when it came to the big title, HBK did the right thing...3 out of 4 times. :shifty: Plus in my eyes, he was the only man to elevate the championionship in between the years of 1992 and 1998.

Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha! Bret Hart didn't make Austin. Hart happened to be in the match that was considered the break out performance for him, but truthfully, Austin would have been Austin with or without the I Quit match at 13.

Jeritron
03-21-2007, 02:43 PM
He never would have dropped the title to Steve unless he was leaving with an injury, that was fishy.

And even still he didn't want to job to him. Undertaker had to threaten taking him into a janitors closet and beating the shit out of him to get him to drop the belt to Steve that night. It was a very nerve racking situation to see how Shawn would handle things and if he would do the job. Thankfully he did.
He also sabotaged WM13 by not jobbing in a Bret/Shawn rematch, instead causing it to be HBK free and a crappy title match in Sid/Taker.
Luckily, we got the Austin/Bret match and all the great thigns that came out of that.

Now, I love Shawn as a champion. I think his first reign was one of the best ever, and I'd consider him a top 5 wwf champion. Slightly behind Austin The Rock Hogan and Bret.
I certainly love HBK as a champion, just clarifying some of the things.

03-21-2007, 02:48 PM
Personally, I just can't argue in the favor of HBK. He had some classic matches and in the post-Hogan WWE he was the first guy to show he potential to make money for the company. But at some point being a good employee has to mean more than being a draw. HBK as a champion (back in the day,) was among the worst of all time. Meh.

The One
03-21-2007, 02:50 PM
No one was truly worried Michaels wasn't going to put over Austin. He was going to. Even if he wasn't injured he was going to. And he did. He was a true pro about that. I know I've heard the story of Taker talking to him too, but that was more of the fact that Taker and Michaels have never really gotten along, and Taker wanted to be a bit of a mellow dramatic bitch about everything.

And personally, I can not even begin to see how people put Bret above Michaels. But that's just me I suppose...

Really, the ONLY times Michaels has ever been confirmed to be too much of a political backstaber and uncoperative, was with the Hart family. I don't know why everyone is so quick to jump on Michaels as being this guy who never did what was right for the company, he did do what was right or the company, he just didn't want to make Bret look good. Which is fine, since Bret really wasn't all that interested in making him look good. Both of them had incredible chemistry with each other so in the end during matches they both looked like a million bucks, but neither one was interested in putting the other one over. Just like Bret refused to put Michaels over in Montreal, except it back fired on him, so "Oh No!" let's feek sympathy for Bret and villify Michaels when they were both guilty of the exact same thing towards one another.

Neither are world titles...RoH is like one step away from solidifying themselves though.Somoa Joe had the longest title reign to date when he held the belt for 22 months. During his reign, ROH held a cross-promotional show with Frontier Wrestling Alliance (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frontier_Wrestling_Alliance) in the United Kingdom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom) on May 17 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_17), 2003 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2003) called Frontiers of Honor. At that show, Joe earned the championship World Title status (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Heavyweight_Championship#Active_World_Heavyweight_Championships) when he defended it against The Zebra Kid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_Bevis). Since then the title has been defended in Germany (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germany), Canada (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada), Switzerland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switzerland), Austria (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austria), Mexico (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexico) and Japan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japan).
