May 1, 2007 - Luke Ford, a relatively unknown 26-year-old actor from Australia, has been selected by Universal to star opposite Brendan Fraser in The Mummy 3 and potentially carry on The Mummy franchise.

Director Rob Cohen tells Daily Variety, "We may spin off into a complete father-son direction with Brendan, but by getting an actor who is in his 20s and not a teenager, we can also put the future on his shoulders. He tested against four much more established actors, and he was magic when he read with Brendan."

Ford will play the son of Rick and Evy O'Connell in the film, a role that had been rumored to go to 17-year-old Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker star Alex Pettyfer, but filmmakers ultimately chose to go in a more mature direction.
The Mummy 3 (possibly called Mummy: Curse of the Dragon) action will begin in the past, tracing the ancient Chinese origins of a shape-shifting mummy (played by Jet Li), a former emperor who was cursed by a female wizard. Michelle Yeoh will play the wizard.

Rachel Weisz dropped out of the project last month and the script was reportedly being rewritten to nix her character. Today's Variety reports, however, that Universal has tested six actresses to replace Weisz. It's unclear at this time what approach they're taking.

Cohen is directing the flick from a script by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (Smallville).

The Mummy 3 reportedly starts shooting in Montreal on July 27, and then will move to locations in China. The film is set for a July 2008 release.

JET LI as the mummy? WTF

Just get rid of the Weisz character. Much easier than recasting.

This film just doesn't need to be made, at all.

The first one was a really good action/fantasy film. The second one blew. If this is made it could go either way.....doesn't need to be made, but then that could be said of 99% of films.

They decided to go with the Scorpion King instead of this.

...No...

The talk was always that the Scorpion King was a relatively separate entity, and they were planning on a third movie which did not have Frasier in it. They were planning it when the SK movie was already done (5 years ago). In interviews, SK was described as a spin-off to the franchise, and they detailed some small bits about the third...

The Mummy is like one my fav movies ever. I loved that whole concept of him taking human parts to put him self together again.

But the 2nd one sucked.

I would be waaaaaay more on board with Fraser starring in Encino Man 2: Back to the Stone Age than this.

Why would you add Asians to an Egyptian themed movie. That's stupid. There are enough myths and fables that revolve around ancient Egypt that none of this stuff is needed.

Let alone that it makes no sense.

The movie is clearly not Egyptian themed anymore

Is adding Chinese inluences to an anachronistic series really a problem?

Jet Li is a talented actor. He can play an ancient egyptian mummy with ease.

So Oded Fehr is not in this one? You would think that after combating a Mummy once and then again his character and Brenden Fraiser's might exchange cell phone information in case the matter comes up again. Oh well, good luck, Rick.

After seeing him as a Gigolo it's hard to see him as anything other than except when he cut his hair and appeared on Charmed.

I can't believe this is likely going to be the movie that finally beats TDK. I hope it doesn't, maybe it won't, but it's probably going to be the case.
How anyone can tolerate Brendan Fraser in anything other than Encino Man is beyond me.
