February 27, 2004 - Midway Entertainment on Friday announced that it was in development with the next installment of its gory fighting franchise, Mortal Kombat: Deception, for PlayStation 2 and Xbox. The company, however, made no mention of a GameCube version, which led to speculation that the game might not be made for Nintendo's console.

The publisher this afternoon confirmed to IGN that it is has no plans to develop a GCN build of Deception. "Mortal Kombat: Deception is not under development for GameCube," a Midway representative said.
Mortal Kombat: Deception, billed as the prettiest and goriest Mortal Kombat outing to date, features the return of classic franchise character Baraka, as well as Scorpion, Mileena and Sub-Zero, among others. The fighter enables players to brawl in fully destructible environments and use the arenas themselves as weapons. For instance, it's possible to fight around a set of rotating blades and to throw one's opponent into the sharp devices in order to grind him or her to bloody shreds.

Mortal Kombat 5: Deadly Alliance released for GameCube, PlayStation 2 and Xbox in 2002. The title sold almost 1.1 million units on PS2, 460,000 on Xbox and 205,000 on GCN respectively, according to NPD data.

Furthermore, Midway may be discontinuing its GameCube lineup altogether. "Midway is still selectively considering software for GameCube. However, there are no titles in development for the console at this time," a spokesperson for the company added.

Whispers from Midway executives as far back as two months ago hinted that such a move might be in the making, but until today the publisher refused to make an official statement.

IGNcube has removed Mortal Kombat: Deception and all other Midway titles from our release dates section. Readers still interested in Mortal Kombat: Deception can check out IGN's early impressions of the game right here.
