The 6th World Cup kicks off on the 8th of Sept.

45 Days to go.

The Draw Can be found here.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/rugby_union/3711557.stm

Pool A
England, South Africa, Samoa, USA, Tonga

Pool B
Australia, Wales, Fiji, Canada, Japan

Pool C
New Zealand, Scotland, Italy, Romania, Portugal

Pool D
France, Ireland, Argentina, Georgia, Namibia

I'm obviously rooting for a NZ win, but it'll be a tough ask. Well, after the pool matches anyway

WHO DO YOU SUPPORT? :)

Nah, the only teams that really stand a chance are New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, or France.
The English, Argentinians, Irish and Welsh are a long shot, and could beat anyone (Except New Zealand) on a really good day.
Other Teams like Samoa, Italy, Fiji can play a tough game, but won't trouble the bigger sides.

I'd say the Quarter Finals will be.

Australia v England
New Zealand v Argentina
South Africa v Wales
France v Scotland

The Semi Finals will be
Australia v New Zealand
South Africa v France

God knows what will happen after that!

Dunno how good your squad was earlier this year, but you lost 2-0 to the argies at home, which is always a tough ask, I know, but in a RWC year it's not the best time to lose to them.

Then again, we've lost to Aussie this year.

England and SA were in the same pool last time - seeing the poms beat the filthy wankers at Subiaco Oval is one of my all time sporting highlights.

I don't think the poms have the team to do it this year, and the Aussies will make the quarters, but no futher.

Canada will beat Wales - mark my words.

Well, Weepu was unlucky to miss out, but I'm actually concerned about our other 1/2backs after Kelleher had a shocker in the last test, and leonard and Ellis haven't been the best so far in the Air NZ cup.
That Eye injury has all but put sommerville out, after he just got back from blowing his achilles, and after seeing the wellington scrum get destroyed by Hawkes Bay on the weekend, I'd hardly be confident with Schwalger lining up for the All Blacks. Centre is still a mess, Conrad really needed more game time on the weekend and having Tana inside him off the bench would of been great. But it didn't happen. Bloody Wellington.

Lol that game was awful. Every try was just identical. Then again, it was only a friendly, and we played our second string team. Last time we played England in a competitive game, we won back in March in the 6 Nations ;)

World Cup will be totally different though. We'll make the Quarter Finals easily. As runners-up anyway. We've got Australia at home at the Millenium Stadium. The last 2 times we've played Australia here we beat them 24-22 and drew 29-29. And when we played them a couple of months ago in Australia we were winning until the very last play of the game (granted the following week we played again and lost 31-0, but never mind).

Really don't want to play The Boks in the Quarters, so winning the group would be huge.

I want the All Blacks to take it but im not confident really.

Too many "Slight injuries" and injury prone players in the squad for my liking.

If everything falls into place and theres no injuries then it will go good for them I thin but if Robinson gets injured and theres a few other fragile ones there (Richie MC Caw concussion anyone) we could be in a bit of trouble.

Also I dont like Sione Lauaki, maybe I am missing something but I would much rather have seen just about anyone else in the team beside him. That being said I dont see a lot of Rugby anymore doue to work so hopefully hes a lot more consistent nowadays.

I think Australia is always a threat, I am hopefull for the Springboks I always have a soft spot for them and England look a little better but there game is so reliant on defense and Wilkinson that if either of them let them down there fucked.

Oh and fuck the French, I want to see Japan beat them, La Porte is a wank.

Ireland could and should win this pool now and avoid the All-Blacks. We're better than Argentina and we're better than France on our day. We could give them a hiding if tonight's France shows up.

It would be just like the French to come back from last night's game and go on to win the group. They've lost the first game in the 6 Nations a number of times but somehow managed to scrape it back up there and win the whole thing.

France are sort of like Ireland's bogey team. No matter how well Ireland play against them they just seem to never be able to get the job done when the 80 minutes are up. Last night's result was pretty crazy though! Missed it as I was wasting my time down at Rodney Parade watching The Gwent Dragons vs Cardiff Blues.

I honestly thought the Italians would put up a tougher match.

Grown men playing little kids was Australia v Japan, although I thought the Japs started well, and the early penalty goals from Australia was cynical rugby considering who the opponent was. I’m watching the Pom v USA replay – bugger me the Poms look terrible, and the Yanks look quite good.

Bad Company

England are just so fucking slow

You look at New Zealand and Australia, they pass quickly, they get the game moving as much as possible and they play smart kicks into space,

Do England do any of these things? Do they fuck. They think they can drag themselves to victories like they did 4 years ago, and its just not gonna happen. South Africa are going to turn them over on Friday and the Aussies will embarrass them in the Quarter Finals.

The mans a fucking beast, cant wait to see what he can do outside of the rough stuff a little more.

And apparently Carl Heyman will see time at Lock, interesting call but I can see it. With Masoe, Lauaki and Collins in the loose there should be plenty of lineout options against a minnow team.

Couldnt agree more on Canrad Smith, him being fit and in form would be a huge boost going into the semis. He plays the traditional Centre so well with his great passing game. Thats going to be invaluable with guys like HOwleet, Sivivatu and Rockoko (SP?) on the wings.

I can't stand Ireland. They're the most overrated team in World rugby. Every year people go on about how awesome they are, and how it will be 'their year' in the 6 Nations every year. When the hell was the last time they won it? Or anything for that matter (the only thing I can remember them winning in recent history is the Triple Crown and that's hardly something to jump up on the rooftops and shout about). They have the potential, just never get the big wins.

Calling them overrated is letting them off the hook. They've got the talent, they're just losers. Absolute chokers. They always give France a headstart, tonight was no different. Giving away stupid fucking penalties so they could pretend they were hard done by.

I'll know better than to talk this lot up ever again. No point talking about potential, they should be at their peak. Waste of talent, waste of everybody's time. We're going to get destroyed by Argentina next week, then the All Blacks will destroy those French frog bastards.

I have come to the conclusion that things like the Haka should be reserved solely for the All Blacks, or only teams that are dominant in their sport.

I've seen too many times other NZ sporting teams or other rugby teams (like Fiji tonight) do their own versions, and those hold no credibility when your team is shit. The point of these is to be intimitading to your opposition, and that doesn't help when you're no good at the sport that you're playing.

The atmosphere watching it in the Newport RFC Club house this evening, unbelievable. The place went nuts when France scored that 2nd try!! Incredible. Everyone was behind the French, dieing to see the favourites get knocked out, and every tackle made by the French everyone gasped in relief that the All blacks didn't break through. My hands are hurting from clapping and my throat is half lost from cheering, I haven't been caught up in a game like that in a long time. That's why we love this sport!

As much as this hurts I have been picking it since the beggining of the week, and the dread of it happening has been there longer.

Without sounding to one eyed I felt Mc Alistair was hard done by and I wish we had have one to see Bernard Laporte knocked out. I dislike that smug little prick with an unbridled intensity.

That being said I think the ABs really let themselves down with some stupid decision making and they deserved to lose more than the French deserved to win IMO.

Lucky I put $100 on the South Africans and not the ABs lol.

Also this does give rise to a very interesting scenario in how far the Pumas can go, wouldnt a World cup Final match put them in a beautiful position to bargain for a 4 nations to replace the Tri nations.

Team Sheep
10-07-2007, 05:12 AM
Without a doubt Argentina have already proven that they deserve to be in one of the world's top competitions, by beating France and Ireland, and very well Scotland today. That would be 3 of the 6 nations they've beaten. Would then set up a huge semi final with South Africa then, and who knows how that game could go? After this world cup we've learnt not to assume anything in rugby anymore.

A France/Argentina final would be pretty incredible. The tournament ends with the game it started with.

I think probably everybody in the stadium thought it was a forward pass for the Jauzion try. Great party in town before and afterwards with the Kiwis, even though they were all sick as dogs at being defeated. This really intense, possibly insane Kiwi taught me the Haka. We had to take our shirts off apparently, but a couple of extremely fit Kiwi birds explained to me later that this is normal procedure.

I always thought that it's a lot harder to get upsets in rugby than in football(soccer), because it's a more structured and controlled game. In soccer the ball is constantly loose, so anything could happen.

Team Sheep
10-14-2007, 06:19 AM
Yeah France had no room to breathe. I must ask, how does it feel to be a Kiwi, to have dominated World Rugby over the past 4 years, setting your own standard that was superior to the rest of the world, where no country could even touch you. Then in the space of 80 mins, your 4 years of dominance just crumbles.

And then ask an Englishman the exact opposite. To be the World's whipping boys by suffering thrashing after thrashing by the rest of the World for 4 years, being labeled as the worst world champions ever, and then turning it on in the Quarter finals and finding themselves in a final again.

It would truly rank as one of, if not the greatest sporting achievement ever if they win next week.

Bad Company
10-14-2007, 06:35 AM
It was tough to watch, especially as I knew early in the 2nd half we'd probably lose it, but I also remember the heartbreakers from 95, 99, and 03 very well, so it was certainly the easiest of those losses to take. I got over 03 quick as well, cause I was there.

The problem with the English is that they still thought they were going to win it, despite how bad their team was.
Our Faith was justified, it's been a serious 4 years and it's always been about the world cup. We had the best side in the world, had beaten all the NH nations convincingly, multiple times, had the Bledisloe cup and Tri-Nations. As well as beating Argentina at home a couple of years ago.
We had rotated our players over the process and had awesome coverage in most positions, and they were all ready to go.
We still had a makeshift centre, which has been an issue in the last 2 world cups, so it was frustrating it ended up like that, and I personally would have fielded a different side against France.

The All Blacks Still Rule :D

10-14-2007, 06:53 AM
I don't think many Englishman actually expected us to retain the title, semi finals would have done for me given the performances in the 4 years since the last world cup. Yeah there's been criticism of several performances since that time but that was pretty much justified in my opinion, it didn't mean to say 'oh we shouldn't be losing a game because we're world champions', more of a feeling that we didn't want to disgrace ourselves as them.

With regards to the how does it feel question - fucking marvellous :D It really beggars belief. If you'd have said to someone when we were getting battered by South Africa, and losing every away game in recent memory, that we'd make the world cup final, you'd have been laughed off the planet.

Quality atmosphere in the bar for the game too, body odour galore but it was just magic.
