Kurt Angle versus Chris Benoit @ Backlash '01 = 6.6

Given that some said they enjoyed this match better than their match at WrestleMania X-Seven, I'm a bit surprized at the 6.6 rating. I remember this match being much better than it was at the time I watched it on Pay Per View back in 2001. I just re-watched the match today and it was definitely kind of blah/whatever.

The next installment of the Kurt Angle versus Chris Benoit, Rate the Match series is from the 2003 Royal Rumble and it was for the WWE Championship. In what might be their best match, and the remembered for the huge standing ovation that Chris Benoit recieved afterwards. This match tore the freaking house down, and it was right after the very ugly HHH/Steiner match.

9.5 My match of the year for 2003, and the standing ovation with Benoit was incredible.

10. Everything about this match was perfect.

The build up - Can Benoit become a Champion? Can he win the big one?
The match - Fast paced. Non-stop action. Great spots.
The end - Excellent finish. Puts both men over.
Post-match - Benoit's first proper "Ovation". Signified him becoming a "Main Eventer".

Everything about this match was spot on. My second favourite match of all time. The only one I like before is the WM20 Triple Threat. Being a Benoit mark you can probably guess why.

Easily the best match I had seen in years. It had great spots, solid mat-work in between said spots, and most of all, suspended my disbelief. Even though everyone in the arena knew damn well that Benoit wasn't going over while they were pushing Angle/Brock, by the time the match ended, you really believed he could have.

This should have been their legacy to professional wrestling...y'know, if Angle hadn't gone all looney and Benoit hadn't murdered his wife and son.

The only thing holding this down from being a 10 is the buildup. While watching this, I really didn't think Benoit had a chance of winning the Championship because everyone knew that Angle/Lesnar was most likely main eventing WM19. It just had "filler" written on it for me. But regardless, the match was AMAZING.
