While still in high school in Ukiah, California, Davey Havok (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Davey_Havok) (vocals), Mark Stopholese (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Stopholese) (guitar) and Vic Chalker (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vic_Chalker) (bass) formed an outfit called AFI in 1991. At the time, the band did not know how to play any instruments. Stopholese suggested his friend Adam Carson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adam_Carson), who had a drum kit, join the band. Stopholese learned guitar and Chalker learned bass (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bass_guitar), but Chalker was soon replaced by Geoff Kresge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geoff_Kresge) and AFI made their first EP in recording Dork (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dork_%28EP%29) (1993) with the now defunct Loose Change (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loose_Change_%28band%29), which included future AFI guitarist Jade Puget (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jade_Puget).
AFI disbanded when its members attended different colleges, including UC Berkeley (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_California%2C_Berkeley) where members of the band lived and practiced for a time in the basement of the Delta Chi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delta_Chi) fraternity house on Channing Way. Kresge moved to New York (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York) where he played with Blanks 77 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blanks_77). After reuniting to perform a live show, the other members decided to drop out of college to play full-time with AFI. Between 1993 and 1995 they released several vinyl EPs (Behind the Times (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Behind_the_Times); Eddie Picnic's All Wet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddie_Picnic%27s_All_Wet); This Is Berkeley, Not West Bay (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/This_Is_Berkeley%2C_Not_West_Bay); AFI/Heckle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AFI/Heckle_Split); Bombing the Bay (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombing_the_Bay); Fly in the Ointment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fly_in_the_Ointment);) independently. Their first full-length, Answer That and Stay Fashionable (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Answer_That_and_Stay_Fashionable) was released in 1995 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1995_in_music). In 1996, the band released their second album, Very Proud of Ya (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Very_Proud_of_Ya), on Nitro Records (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitro_Records). The songs "Cruise Control" and "Love Is a Many Splendored Thing" from Very Proud of Ya were used in the 1996 independent film Mary Jane's Not a Virgin Anymore, which was first screened in 1997 and also featured Havok in a small role.
After several tours in support of the album Very Proud of Ya, Kresge decided to leave the group. His spot was filled by Hunter Burgan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hunter_Burgan) for the remaining Very Proud of Ya tour dates. Burgan went on to help AFI record Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shut_Your_Mouth_and_Open_Your_Eyes) (1997) and was invited to become the full-time bassist. Future AFI guitarist Jade Puget also provided background vocals on Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes, making it the first album to feature all four current members of the band.

I really enjoy Black Sails In the Sunset, The Art of Drowning (especially this), and Sing the Sorrow. Their new one is not so hot. I hope they stop making shit like that.

I love their old stuff. Decemberunderground isn't bad, but not as good as their traditional sound.

8. I seem to be in the minority in that I enjoy their more recent albums to the earlier ones.
