yeah, the first name that came to mind was John Lennon, and then I thought for about 2 more Seconds and decided on Elvis.

I think it comes down to Lennon and Cobain, with the argument being somewhat parallel to Ali vs. Jordan. I really don't know who to pick.

Lennon: Hogan.
Elvis: The Rock.
Cobain: Gillberg.

I don't think its Cobain personally, I think Cobain is to Lennon or Elvis what Michael Jordan was to Muhammed Ali in that argument tbh

I thought somebody else had actually legitimately put his name forward:o

Thing is someone probably will, hell there were a number of people in the sports forum who think Wayne gretzky is a bigger sporting icon than Muhammed Ali:lol:

Seriously, Elvis strikes a chord in a way nobody else does. The Beatles are probably a close second as a group, and Hendrix (Overrated though he is) has to be up there.

Michael jackson, lol. Of course Cobain is more influential. Seriously, besides being able to moonwalk, who has Jackson influenced or what has he influenced in terms of music.

Look, all MJ influences now are little kids into his bedroom.

Kurt Cobain did, too. He liked to steal songs and little kids' innocence.

Elvis. The Beatles had the maximum chart topper albums. Jim Hendrix and Led Zepellin for their contribution to rock. Bryan Adams and Sting are really popular back in south east Asia.

Elvis, followed closely by The Beatles. Personal preference is for the lads, but people worship Elvis in a way that nobody else compares to.

Every generation has their musical icons...You went from Elvis to the Beatles, to Led Zeppelin and well....well the 80's yeah, whatever, and then Nirvana.

I'd say the Beatles probably created the biggest stir and perhaps the largest impact.

My question is, how long til we see another icon?

Damn sure not in this era. Not nessecrily because of lack of talent, but we live in a time where you can literaly choke on the cynicism. EVERYTHING gets shit on at one time or another. And EVERYTHING is "overrated".

That's a rather cynical approach. Though it's hard to foresee a musical icon being produced in an era of corporate pablum. It's not so much that everything's overrated as it is everthing is dumbed down for the sake of consumerism. This happened in the 70s, 80s, and 90s as well, just not to the same level. It was realistically possible for someone to break away from the pack in those decades.

Maybe it is, I'm just fed up with people liking music based on whats "cool" to like and dislike, rather than what they actually enjoy. I'll bet half the people who make fun of fallout boy secretly like them. Not saying they're the next icon, but just an example of my meaning.

And while I agree that the industry is corporate driven, I don't think it's quite as bad as the late90's/early00's. Back then everything seemed to be sound alike female pop stars and boy bands. I remember truthfully thinking that rock could die back then.

Kane Knight
01-12-2008, 05:22 PM
I don't pay attention to the whole "It's cool to hate" argument, since it seems to be a pop trend in and of itself to accuse people of "just hating it because it's cool" to do so.

I think Panda Bear, Conor Oberst, and several others are going to be Indie Icons.

Eminem is an Icon for sure. As is Tupac.

It will take time for us to be seperate, when rap is looked on as legitimate as rock (which it should be and is by very many)
