Frankly, the idea of a flame thrower alone fills me with girlish glee.

WWII

Booooo

Yeah, that.

I like CoD just fine, but the WWII thing has run its course.

Hitler existed, Holocaust happened, etc, etc. We don't need 400 perspectives on it, and 100 different one man army POVs.

Even so...I'll play it, because I know even though it's mostly rehashed from before, I still like it quite a bit. Guess I just got used to the Modern Warfare.

However...A flamethrower is always killer, no matter what time period it exists in.

The only plus I see in this is that we're going out of Germany and going island hopping in the Pacific. A route most game developers rarely take when they take on a game based on WWII. Then again, there was Medal of Honor: Rising Sun. And that, IMO, is at the bottom of the barrel in that franchise.

After reading that, this doesn't bode well so far. Come on Infinity Ward, up the cash if need be to lock up the rights to the franchise.

They are actually trying to do so, I believe. Don't think it's gonna happen tho. Activision has much deeper pockets.

If they do anymore WWII games after this (Where you're not gassing Jews, that is) they should be overly American-ised.

Like have no other countries in it other than the evil ones and America and you win the game by scoring a field goal with Hitlers head while the world chants USA.

If it was Infinity Ward making this I wouldn't mind at all that they are doing the Pacific Theatre.

However, it's Treyarch, creators of the ass-wipe game of the series, CoD3. This game will sell out the ass even though it is destined to be an epic phail.

COD3 is the WORST game in the series.

It is an average at best game and if it wasn't labled as Call of Duty 3 it would have failed in sales as well. The only reason that game sold is because they leeched off of Infinity Wards greatness.

Senior producer Noah Heller offered some insight into its absence, saying, "We're getting rid of the number in Call of Duty for a very specific reason: It's because we want you to know that when you're playing Call of Duty: World at War you're playing the best shooter, the best WW2 game ever. Likewise when you're playing Modern Warfare, likewise when you play any game that will be called Call of Duty."

From Gamespot:

Treyarch's Call of Duty: World at War hasn't even stormed the beaches yet, but Activision is already talking about the next full installment in the series. In a half-day analysts' presentation yesterday, Activision Publishing president and CEO Mike Griffith confirmed that franchise creator Infinity Ward would be returning to develop the next Call of Duty game, which he referred to as Call of Duty 6 and pegged as a 2009 release.

As for World at War, Griffith talked about Activision's efforts to monetize the franchise's online play. Specifically, he said that the Treyarch game would have three times the downloadable content as Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and mentioned "Day One Advantage" premium content. Later in the presentation, the Day One Advantage was explained as "the ability to accelerate your experience points when you play online."

Griffith said that the publisher was looking hard at additional ways of expanding the game's business model, and noted there was "tremendous opportunity" to bring the series to new "theaters, game designs, and plotlines" in the future.

http://www.destructoid.com/world-at-war-will-not-charge-for-level-ups-104005.phtml

Yesterday we reported that Call of Duty: World at War would offer multiplayer DLC at launch that would give paying customers a "Day 1 Advantage." It was reported that this "advantage" would mean CoD going the Tales of Vesperia route by offering experience points for a price. According to Treyarch, that's not actually true, although you can still get your hands on a multiplayer edge.

Despite the quotes that have been attributed to Activision, the game's developer has clarified that there will not be any "Day 1" DLC:

Mentions about Day 1 content are actually a reference to what the marketing guys have been calling a "Day One Advantage" or a "Tactical Edge," a program we have going with Gamestop. Users who pre-order Call of Duty World at War with Gamestop, or who buy the collector's edition from them, will get immediate access to a high-level rifle (for pre-orders) or LMG (for collector's edition) that other players will have to unlock via ranking up in multiplayer.

IGN:

October 13, 2008 - The dogs of war are being unleashed today, as Activision Publishing, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) and developer Treyarch announced the launch of the multiplayer beta for Call of Duty: World at War on the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft. Console players can guarantee themselves a token by pre-ordering the game at North American GameStop retail locations,* or online. Call of Duty fans that register to become members at callofduty.com are also eligible to receive a token, but these tokens are limited in supply, so register today. Windows PC fans can expect a multiplayer beta soon. For more information about either beta and the opportunity to secure a beta token or key, fans can also visit www.callofduty.com/beta.

The Call of Duty: World at War multiplayer betas will provide players with an opportunity to play as U.S. Marines, German Wehrmacht, Japanese Imperial Army and Russian Red Army factions in a variety of game types (Team Death Match, Free-For-All, Capture the Flag and War), across three different maps:

* Castle: The Imperial Japanese Army faces off against the Marine Raiders in a daytime battle, located on the grounds of an ancient, Japanese castle.

* Makin: The U.S. Marine Raiders square off against the Imperial Japanese Army in a nighttime fight, set in an outpost on the Makin Atoll in the Pacific.

* Roundhouse: The Wehrmact will fight the Red Army to the bitter end in a daytime struggle that features tank and infantry combat, set in a desolate, war-torn European train depot.

The betas will last for a few weeks; however, the full battle will commence on November 11, 2008 when Call of Duty: World at War is released to retailers nationwide.

So a buddy of mine who works for Infinity Ward is in town and he informed me of something interesting that I thought might make a difference for some people. I know everyone is complaining that this is back to WWII BUT the reason for that it Infinity Ward has it in their contract that Treyarch can't do anything that post dates the 70s. So there's your reason.

Hadn't played CoD since number 2 online but played on this one last night on the XBox 360 at my brother's house. For me, the dogs and tanks spoil it a bit. I don't mind the odd tank map but it seemed like quite a few from what I played, the dogs are just stupid along the lines of what Blitz was saying. I felt the best way to play was to camp which isn't the best. Having said that, I was hooked and had to drag myself away from it before I done something like stop there all night.
