View Full Version : An Age Without Orton

It has been a couple of weeks since Randy Orton suffered his shoulder injury. What has Raw been like since the loss of The Legend Killer and what steps should they take to fill that gap?

His "Angry Orton" character just doesn't feel natural. The man is still really mechanic in his delivery, too.

That's exactly it. Orton needs to go back to his more Evolution-based character. More bag-shitting antics.

Orton's gimmick is almost identical to Triple H's in 1999-2001, but he doesn't have the charisma or talent to pull it off.

I don't think Orton's gimmick is at fault. One problem with Orton however, is that they're making him look a league below Cena/HHH. During the Wrestlemania, he was clearly made to look inferior (i.e. before Mania, HHH and Cena were almost ignoring Orton and focusing on one another). Orton's Mania victory was made to look like a fluke.

On top of that - Orton has always had to cheat DRASTICALLY in order to beat HHH and Cena (while doing very clean jobs).

Between 99-01, Triple H scored almost clean victories over Foley, The Rock, Austin, Kane, Big Show, and anyone else that was worth a lick.

Big difference in booking.

Beyond that, wrestlers made Trips look good. Most of Orton's major victories have done nothing to make him look like anything more than a second-rate threat. We're not even talking about wins and losses, now.

There are really only two victories that have made Orton look like a threat in my eyes... Beating Benoit for the World Heavyweight Championship and beating Foley at Backlash. You could probably throw RVD in there too when he won the IC Title, but to relate back to what was said earlier, his Evolution gimmick was it, the psychotic badass really doesn't work.

Personally, I've noticed quite a drop in my "Oh, shit, here we go again" sensation while watching Raw. It's still there, of course, but not nearly as bad.

Mr. Nerfect
06-18-2008, 10:30 PM
Chris Benoit and Mick Foley both made Orton look like a star. Foley really started the upwards main event momentum for Randy Orton (in a big way, at least). Chris Benoit got a great match out of Orton before dropping the World Heavyweight Title to him, and the fucking Toronto crowd was cheering for Orton. Then he got bitched out by Triple H.

Mr. Nerfect
06-18-2008, 10:33 PM
Orton really should have taken over Evolution, and Triple H should have chased the title as a face to prove he can still do it, or Orton should have handed the belt over to Triple H when asked, and continued his feud with Chris Benoit, who would have been upset Orton would just throw away the World Title like that. Orton goes on to win the Royal Rumble, and when Triple H assumes Orton is going to SmackDown! to divide and conquer with Evolution, Orton gives Triple H an RKO, and signs the contract for a World Heavyweight Title match at WrestleMania 21.

That's completely understandable. Like I said, I still feel it, but at least when those two talk, it's not the same script verbatum every week. "You see, full name of my opponent, I'm the greatest there is! I was on top for six months, in a very vague way, and don't forget, I beat Triple H to start my reign!" Blah, blah, blah.

Also, I have no reason to judge Cena or H as bad people, which runs in stark contrast to the stories of Randy "Shitbag" Orton.

Mr. Nerfect
06-19-2008, 09:27 AM
Randy Orton should be drafted to SmackDown! next week as a way of reminding people he exists, and getting marks to tune into the show, because they are the only people who think Orton is worth something.

I wouldn't mind seeing Orton go to Smackdown. With Cena and HHH dominating the top spots on RAW (or atleast destined to dominate), I think Smackdown will give Orton more opportunities. My problem with Orton being on RAW, is the fact that he's been made to look FAR inferior to both Cena and HHH (i.e. only getting fluke victories, or getting beaten very cleanly).

In fact - I'd like to see a lot upper mid-card wrestlers move to Smackdown....wrestlers that have 'stagnant' characters/statuses, but are still worthy enough to be champ. JBL, Chris Jericho, and Umaga are a few that come to mind.

On RAW - I'd like to see get stacked with a lot of the promising talents....and people that have a serious chance of "moving up the ladder" within a relatively short time frame. These guys include Jeff Hardy, Ken Kennedy, Santino Marello (my current favorite wrestler), MVP, CM Punk, Shelton Benjamin, etc.

The other day - I stated that D'Lo Brown should go to Smackdown. I take that back - I would much rather see him on RAW.

Randy Orton the InterContinental Champion was great. I don't even know what it was about him at that time that made him so awesome, but there it was.

He hasn't been anything remarkable since then. I can't name one above-average match he's had since Orton vs. Cactus Jack at Backlash 2004.

Maybe Orton vs. Jeff Hardy at the Rumble, but only barely.

The Optimist
06-21-2008, 06:49 AM
Even that was a monstrous let down. I know I probably sound immature, but Jeff should have been put over there. He had the momentum of a freight train going in to that match and it was just another Randy Orton job. He gets beaten and beaten and beaten then the face gets dropped by one RKO.
