Alternative bands like Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit become so unpopular?

Because nu metal is terrible, probably.

Limp Bizkit are probably one of the worst relics of the nu-metal fad, along with Papa Roach and Alien Ant Farm

I always thought Linkin Park were good. I mean Minutes 2 Midnight is no where near shit.

I am not a big Fred Durst fan but the "Take a look around" and "Build a bridge" tracks were good.

Oh god, Alien Ant Farm. Are they still a band?

And you have all their records. Don't lie!

I believe a better question would be, why were bands like Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park ever popular.

I saw Alien Ant Farm (inadvertently) when they opened for 311 and they didn't play their cover of Smooth Criminal. Seriously, guys? You have one fucking song and you don't even play it?

A lot of people hated Limp Bizkit from the get-go, and Linkin Park have been mocked mercilessly since they put out Hybrid Theory. Papa Roach, too. Don't know about AAF.

But seriously, do you think this came out of a vacuum or something?

None of those bands were anything special.

Linkin Park is fairly good. But I dunno, whenever they release a new album, I always enjoy it, and listen to it a lot. But then after a few weeks, I get sick of it, and don't listen to it anymore. And it's not like other bands where if I get sick of them, I can give myself a break from them, and I'll eventually want to hear them again. No, once I'm sick of a linkin park album, I'm sick of it for good.

But props to them for entertaining me for a few weeks, I guess?

One of the other things I'd like to mention is that Linkin Park's popularity hasn't really gone anywhere. They're still seeing strong sales off M2M, even though the record is pretty lackluster. Their sales outdid Hybrid Theory, and it's impossible to judge Meteora within an early time period, so that's hard to nail down. However, M2M has had as many singles that have charted well as Meteora's singles.

I'm not even gonna look at Limp Bizkit, but reallly, I think this illustrates the point.

I love LP, listening to them now. I like LB. I can give a shit about popularity, people don't dictate my listening habits. I actually kinda like when artist aren't talked about anymore - nothing like some newb wearing LP or Motorhead tees around album-drop time and fading away waiting for the next act. That happens in all genres though. Damn annoying.

3 Dollar Bill Y'all wasn't bad.
Hybrid Theory wasn't bad until it got over played.

That's about as far as those bands go. I really wish Mike Shinoda would walk away from Linkin Park and do his own thing though.

It really is. Their attempt to expand betrays their lack of depth. Even LP fans seem to be nonplussed, by and large.

HT was so amazingly homogenous, and I think that hurt them, too. Which is amazing, considering the demos they did weren't quite as generic before their producers stepped in. But HT was like three beats with slightly different lyrics and the same theme in a lot of them.

Still, I liked the album, sameyness and all. Meteora was better in terms of diversity, but still sort of rehashed the same themes, phrased all of the songs the same way, etc.

Of course, I don't get the overplaying of it because I live in a shitty small town, and even the nearby college rock stations never really did the nu metal shit. That might have worn on me, but I still listen to a few LP songs now and again.

Someone should explain he doesn't have to LOOK like Rob Reiner to direct.
