View Full Version : Can we stop comparing other matches to HBK vs. Taker??

Juan

Please? That was the best match WWE has churned out in a long time. Comparing it to any other match is really unfair.

Thank You

Almost as good of a thread as HBK/Taker.

Which HBK/Taker match are you refering to Juan? Can I compare matches to their Hell in a Cell?

There are too many rules. :(

On the one hand, it is kinda unfair. On the other, it reminded a lot of people that the current product is pretty mediocre. Can you blame them for being excited about a bona fide amazing match?

I will just say this...HBK vs. Taker was awesome, yes, but WM XXIV, HBK v. Flair has to be amongst some of Shawn's best performances.

Shadow

I think XIX with Jericho pretty much trumps that performance in terms of a guy who can actually fly with HBK on a big stage.

Was up out of my seat every second for that match.

Eh, Taker/Michaels was better than those two matches mentioned, imo. I dunno how you can say Taker couldn't go with Michaels.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. That match, for me, defines the Sports Entertainment singles match. It had everything you need in it without going over the top (no pun intended) and without relying on gimmicks.

First time in a VERY long time I had been on the edge of my seat yelling in joy and marking out at the screen.

To be fair, if Jericho vs Mysterio happened at Wrestlemania where it was a mask vs title match instead of at The Bash, I personally believe it would have been rated as being just as good a match as HBK vs Taker. The fact that HBK vs Taker happened at Wrestlemania in front of such a huge crowd with a huge buildup made it more of a big match feel in comparison to a midcard match on a crappy PPV.

This is a good point. It's also the fact that WWE will give Shawn Michaels over 30 minutes to drag anyone to a match that people will say is one of the greatest matches ever at WrestleMania and at WrestleMania only. The man is only human.

I don't think Jericho vs. Mysterio would be put on the same level though simply for it happening at WrestleMania though. HBK and Taker did make something special. Atmosphere or not. And this coming from someone who hates seeing HBK lose and sees him as the only person I can truly suspend reality as root for as if everything is real.

Lets face it, only a moron would think Mysterio would lose his mask in his match against Jericho. But to the credit of Mysterio and Jericho, both guys gave it their all in their match and suspended disbelief. If two guys can suspend disbelief in a match and hook people in emotionally enough into a match to think that anything is possible then they have done their job effectively. Jericho and Mysterio did that effectively at The Bash and did that without having to wrestle 30 minutes.

Still think they wouldn't make Rey unmask ever AND show his face? He's already been unmasked, and it's only a matter of WHEN, not IF, Rey has to not only unmask forever, but show his face to everyone.

if Rey Mysterio was unmasked in WWE then his career would be effectively over. Unmasking other wrestlers helped enhance their career (especially for Kane for about 12 months). There's so much more money to be made from having Rey masked as opposed to being unmasked.

Unmasking Rey isn't like it would be the first thing Vince has done just for a lonely laugh...we all know the guy has a twisted sense of humor at times, and sometimes he does things like that just for his own amusement, not the fans...

Vince is all about the money. Even he would not do that for a laugh without there being some sort of financial incentive.

Yeah Rey won't be unmasked, ever. He might take it off when he retires or something, as some sort of respect thing, I dunno.

But the mask is massive merchandise, kids love Rey, and it's all about his heritage and whatever. Didn't he have to wrestle mask-free in WCW which he found disrespectful.

Kane and Hurricane's masks were gimmick masks, Rey's mask is Oscar Gutierrez's mask, all about tradition and heritage. Not that Vince would care about that normally, but Rey's a superstar, so will at least have some say over issues like that.

I don't think Shawn has really been dragging anybody to good matches at Wrestlemania, save maybe Cena and even that's debatable. He's had great opponents on the big shows and he knows how to bring the best out of all of the guys he faces. I know I've heard the whole "good thing he dragged Taker through that match" and it makes me cringe everytime I hear it. Taker is a great performer and has watchable matches no matter who he faces. Bats is not considered a genius ring worker and the Taker/Batista series of matches were incredible.

I wasn't really referring to Taker per se. More just the fact that HBK vs. anyone is the guaranteed money match because it doesn't matter who you put him up against.

Great point. I'm not trying to drag out an argument here, but I honestly don't think Vince would give a fuck less what Rey's traditions are. Granted I respect the lucha libre tradition of not having to unmask oneself in public, but Vince would still just find a way to slap his likeness onto new merch every so often, and he'd still rake in the money on Rey's popularity just off of t-shirts, sweatbands, etc.

I doubt it. Pretty sure the kids that buy most of Rey's merchandise don't care that he isn't a hoss. And besides, they already have a seemingly real life super hero

I was comparing Rey with the mask as opposed to him without the mask. He is much more marketable with the mask. I know they don't care he is a hoss but we saw how interest dropped in Rey when he was forced to wrestle without his mask in WCW.

Granted, this was a rare thing, but from the front page, Clark actually had a link to a pic of Rey last night getting unmasked and you can actually see him trying to cover up his face:

http://wzronline.com/wp-content/gallery/reynewunmasked/1.jpg
Now don't get me wrong. I am NOT saying that this will become a permanent thing or anything. Just wanted to prove to everyone here who said this would not happen with Rey at all, are now wrong.

Juan
07-13-2009, 05:20 AM

They did the same spot at Extreme Rules. The people saying this will never happen are saying that Rey will never be unmasked permanently, not that his mask will never come off of his face in a match EVER. Are you that dense?

I don't think Vince is stupid enough to blow all the merchandise sales that Rey's mask generates. WCW found out that kind of thing the hard way.
