So I have the urge to listen to some of the more avant-garde, improvisational jazz music, but my knowledge of jazz in general is limited. I don't know how many of you here actually listen to jazz, especially the more experimental stuff, but any suggestions will be welcome.

I know of Eric Dolphy and his "Out to Lunch" album, and I know of John Zorn, though I could do with some suggestions in regard to his extensive back-catalog.

So shoot!

Ornette Coleman. Start with the Shape of Jazz to Come and then the obviously titled Free Jazz (which is one of tyhe most fucked up albums I've ever heard).

I've been trying to get the desire to find my notebook from the Jazz class I took yto help you more, but I haven't gotten there yet. Sorry.

I love Charlie Mingus' records. Particulally Tijuana Moods. It's so unique to hear improvised music lead from the bass. Like nothing else.

Coltrane is the obvious choice for picking up more about the style, but Sun Ra is worth a listen. He has always said that all his music was written as such, Which I guess removes it from Free-form, but it was always coupled with the genre due to how free and unprepared it sounded. Check it out.
