Really liking this. Have listened to it twice in a row so far and listening a third time now. "Lo-fi" with kind of a "surreal" sound to it. Pretty great.

6.5/10

straight up rock and roll coming out of rockford, illinois. just saw them play on saturday night and picked up this, their newest effort. it's pretty straight forward, but they bring it hard. i can see getting sick of it after awhile as it will end up all sounding the same. love the guy's voice, though. my favorite track is probably "a gentleman's wager." i'm at work rigth now otherwise i'd check and see if they have stuff up on youtube. they probably do.

Paloma Faith - Do You Want The Truth, Or Something Beautiful - 8/10.

As a few of you might have picked up over time, I listen to alsorts. Someone suggested to me that I might see the merit in this record, and they really weren't wrong.

It isn't even something that I would usually be into, but Paloma is so charismatic and compelling with her look and vocal, it is hard not to appreciate her on first impression. After that, you start to unfold her lyrics and music. She siings about relavance in her life and tends to be in a similar vein to someone like Lily Allen, but far more elequant and traditional in it's prose. Her vocal is like Etta James, steeped in the traditions of 50's female Jazz vocalists. And the music is just classic pop construction, with Jazz influenced melodies. I merely dream of being able to write pop songs as good as this.

My only critizism of the album is how it's produced. It can sound quite manufactured, particulally the drum sounds used. Which I can understand for the market it's aimed at, but they could have gotten a better, more live sounding sound from it. If you listen to her live, it blows the record out of the water in my opinion. I also think the mixing levels are pretty poor in places. The shame of it is that she is trying to be a truely credible pop musician, and to be let down by production is almost going to alienate the audience she wouldn't have if she was a more mainstream popista.

Stone Cold Sober is a great song, but this one is my favourite. The marketing and promotion must have been fucking woeful because this had a pretty poor showing in the charts, and for me it's as good as anything the pop world has ever produced. If I had finished writing this song on a guitar, and ran through it the final time, I would be 100% convinced I had just written a number 1.

But then, promoting a 'credible pop star' is a fine line when not trying to send a distorted message to the audience.

Here are the albums I got lately:

IAM - 20

A legendary French rap group which decided to have a live concert in front of the pyramids of Gizeh for their 20th anniversary. All their hits rearranged with an orchestra, some arab instruments and singers, etc. One of the best live albums I have heard.
10/10

Sage Francis - Sick of Wasting

His latest album of rarities, collaborations and b-sides. There are a couple of good tracks, particularly "SFR Pays Dues". This one is definitely the best from the album. Some of the older stuff and some of the radio appearances either sound cheap or isn't that good at all. Still, more good than bad, as usual.
7/10

Flight of the Conchords - I Told You I Was Freaky

Their second album is not as good as the first one. There are 5 songs I would listen to regularly, the others are either too far from their folk roots musically or not funny enough. Still, "Hurt Feelings", "You Don't Have To Be A Prostitute" and "Angels" are worth listening to.

I will for sure do that. That album is, in my opinion, what rock should be.

Last album I listened to was The Pains of Being Pure of Heart- ST. This sounds like a combination of The Smiths meet some 1990's dreampop, a lot less mopey than Morrissey lyrics though.

Best song would be "The Tenure Itch."

First of all, it's about time this epic performance came about, in such high quality. One of the most memorable live shows of it's time, and the moment Nirvana sort of was at their peak...or very close to it.
The dvd obviously doesnt edit out anything..no time constraints. The CD does edit out most of the talking and joking, all that banter, but the songs are kickass so whatever. If you ever liked Nirvana and/or just love great live shows, this is pretty essential.

Most modern rock bands do not have the balls to make an album like this (ala Breaking Benjamin, Papa Roach, Sick Puppies) The fact that two established 90's vets and a rock god from the 70's took this long to make such an awesome "modern rock" record says a lot about the abysmal state of the music industry/why I have been listening to a lot of indie and electronic lately.

Bob Dylan - The Times They Are A-Changin'

9/10

This record was masterfully put together. Dylan had a true sense of the times and he often portrayed his knowledge in his songwriting. This album was released in 1964. The amazing thing is, things had not begun to change just yet until after Dylan wrote The Times They Are A-Changin'. Why I think that is amazing is because because he was such a smart person, he basically predicted change to come before it actually did. A savvy album.

I rated it 9 out of 10 because no album can ever be absolutely perfect. But this is as close as they come.

It's one of the best sounding rock bands I have ever heard. It's full of really sick hooks and riffs, and I love Homme's voice.... But there are only 2 or 3 really good songs, the rest are blazé and the lyrics are pretty much forgettable.

The Strokes - Is This It

10/10

Every song is beautiful. The Lo-fi electic indie sound was virtually invented with this record. Julian's voice is so unique and lazily perfect and suits the music of the band so well. I put it on because I saw it was top of the NME best albums of the decade, and because they are touring next year, and after listening to it for the first time in a while, it's hard to argue against it.

Lol, I just started naming off late nineties indie bands. I know a whole bunch more, but I didn't think it would be fair to actually look them up or it'd be cheating. Probably not cheating, but I would have felt kind of dickish for actually looking up information. being informed would be a huge advantage against fabien in this conversation.

The only bands you listed either weren't or aren't big enough to have been a notable influence on modern indie bands, in the context we are discussing, weren't classed as indie in the first place, or both.

My point is, guided by voices did little to influence The Strokes. It's blaitantly all 70's guitar bands and 80's electro bands. they say so themselves.

Radiohead - Ok computer

8/10

After years of refusing to check out radiohead due to my hate towards gimpy-eyed Thom Yorke, I finally bit the bullet and bought this album. I have to say I actually quite liked it. I thought it was just OK when I first heard it. Continue to listen to it and I think it really grows on you. See them live and then it becomes amazing. I felt the same way with The Bends album it got better after time and a live show.

Incubus is pretty much my favorite band ever, so I may be a little biased on the rating. "Paper Shoes" isn't even really my favorite song on the album, but it'd be hard to pick just one. They really ventured out in this album and weren't afraid to take risks, which I feel paid off. There were rock out moments, chill out moments, great lyrics, and great music. I feel like I want to listen to this album every day.

I am going through a few of my old albums.

The Streets- A Grand Don't Come For Free.

For a time this album almost spoke directly to me. It still does in many ways. Dry Your Eyes is an amazing song lyrically. Mike Skinner always had that gift of honesty and sincerity that made it feel like you were just listening to a pal just have a chat with you about his life.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/x7MCbis75wk&hl=en_GB&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/x7MCbis75wk&hl=en_GB&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

There are better songs on the album, but this one is probably the song I identify with most. Even if you remove the whole plot of his girl Simone cheating on him with his friend Dan no song really sums up clubbing like this. Even down to taking too much MDMA because you original think the pills are shit so you get overwhelmed to the point where you can just sorta move your arms.

One of the few songs that hits me just right.

I'd give the album 9.5/10

Die Antwoord - $o$: 7/10
Busta Rhymes - Total Devastation (Best Of): 8/10
Modest Mouse - The Moon & Antarctica: 9/10

That's some of the stuff I just got tonight. Completed my Modest Mouse collection, only had the two most recent albums before that.

"My Dinosaur Life" is the first MCS album I got since their first one. Very "pop", but very enjoyable too. Lots of catchy songs on that album.

I've been on a Busta Rhymes nostalgia trip since I heard his "Don't Touch Me" song remixed on "Ocarina of Rhyme", so I got this one. I really enjoy Busta Rhymes' delivery.

Die Antwoord was recommended to me by Zelda. The girl's voice is really annoying at first, but then you get used to it, and as you keep listening to the album, some of the songs reminds you of MIA's songs with world beats and stuff like that. "Enter The Ninja" is silly but catchy as hell.

KRS-One - A Retrospective: 7/10
Oxmo Puccino - Opéra Puccino: 8/10
Wyclef Jean - Toussaint St-Jean (From the Hut to the Projects to the Mansion): 5/10

I got the KRS-One album because it occured to me I only had like two songs of his which I enjoyed tremendously, so I should get more. Some of the old stuff isn't really my cup of tea. I love the lyrics, but some of the beats don't seem good enough, even though I should be the last guy to be judging that. However, there are more than enough great tracks to make this album worth your time if you don't have anything else by the guy.

Oxmo Puccino is a French rapper, and this is his first album released in 1998. I missed it at the time because I was poor, even though I knew the guy because he is often featured on IAM's records, and IAM are my favorites. Anyway, I rediscovered the guy recently, and it's a shame I didn't do it sooner. That album would have been playing non-stop in my CD player back then. It still holds up well. Awesome delivery and great lyrics. Some songs are catchy as hell too.

Wyclef's latest is probably one of his weakest record ever. Most of the songs are either flat or annoying, and the one I enjoyed the most features Cindy Lauper, which is kinda weird. Out of 17 tracks, I really enjoyed about 3 or 4. The rest are kinda bland.

My roommate told me to listen to tracks called "Promise Kept" and "Sometimes". Been hooked ever since.

9/10. Love their sound. Reminds me of the 80s alot, but could easily be mainstream today. Surprised the US hasn't heard as much of them but i think they are big in Norway.

Usher - Raymond v. Raymond

8/10. I've always liked Usher. I love the production on this album. To really grasp the production and the mastering, you should listen to this on your ipod with some headphones. Will still sound good on a stereo or car stereo, but its great on my Droid. People say he's trying to go to his "Confession" days, but its not that simililar other than the points made about the songs. I mean, what singer/musician isn't talking about either money, the opposite (or same for George Michael) sex, love, trials and tribulations, etc.

Jay-Z - Blueprint III

9.5/10. He is the best. He is starting to get into the realm (if he wasn't already) of the best rapper EVER. He is too consistent (minus Kingdom Come..not a TERRIBLE album, but not a good comeback album) in the game for anybody to deny his greatness. His lyrics are better than 90% of the game and usually when you are in rap for a while, you "lose your touch." Not for Hov (or Nas for that matter).

Love "Young Forever", "Thank You", "DOA", "As Real As It Gets", basically the whole album. Only reason why it didn't get a 10 was because i cannot get into "Venus v. Mars". lol

Old one, but I just learned it existed. This is actually Fatboy Slim under a new name, with fatured artists as guests. There are some good tracks, like those with Emmy The Great, Iggy Pop and David Byrne & Dizee Rascal. There are a couple of tracks that feel like filler, but at least they aren't annoying beats like what I seem to find on some albums of that genre. Solid effort all the way.

I've seen them so many times and each time is incredible. And Tom always sounds a bit different for tv performances. I love the way he sings, and I don't like how everyone on youtube knock his voice then claim to love his band(s). That doesn't work for me.

As for the show on Monday, he sounded f'n awesome and the show was the same. I'm still waiting for some more high quality vids to surface from it.

Sum 41 - Underclass Hero

Fucking great album, 9/10.

It ventures back to their punk sound as opposed to hardcore which the previous two albums were. However, dealing with the same issues that I very much relate to. Finding worth, dealing with feeling little or no ambition because of the world around you and the cards you've been dealt, having little faith in people and the government, etc.

I did also have a chance to pick up the new Godsmack album, The Oracle.

It was ok, I've followed Godsmack forever and have liked all their stuff. They've never changed. That's cool because they stay true to their sound, but it might not be so good because unless you really know, you can't tell which songs are from which album.

I'll give it a 7/10, average. When I was in high school I would have given it a 9/10 but I observe their music a little differently now as my musical taste has begun to define itself.

Good album from Cage, although as a whole, I prefered "Hell's Winter". Standout track is "Fat Kids Need An Anthem", but this is an album I can easily listen to all the way without skipping a song.

Sage Francis - Li(f)e: 7/10

Sage is probably my favorite rapper, but I feel this album is not up to par with his last two. The beats are less catchy, the lyrics didn't get my attention as much, something seems "off" with it. It's not bad by any mean, as it is still good enough to keep, and maybe it'll grow on me eventually, but he's done better.

Rasputina - Sister Kinderhook

8/10

Another strong album from Melora and Co. Lyrically, it is stronger than Oh Perilous World, which suffered from lyrics that felt quite stilted at times. Musically, I think more interesting than they have done in quite awhile. Arrangement-wise, they have stripped all the recorders, dulcimers and pianos from the previous album; and kept just clean cellos, the occasional banjo, and the appearance of a erhu on one track. With the exception of one brief appearance, they have got rid of the distorted cellos, which was quite a surprise.

I think the only other person who listens to Rasputina on this board is WWKD, but all should listen to the cello-rific goodness.

Wavves - King of the Beach
Couple of "mad blink-182-ish" songs on the album. Pretty good. Just leaked so none of the songs I wanted to post are anywhere, but this is the "single" I guess:

Jack Johnson - To The Sea

So Jack has been a summertime favorite of mine for several years. I didn't even know he had a new album come out. Must not publicize himself being that he owns his own label I guess he doesn't feel he needs to anymore.

Anyways, I downloaded it. It is ok. Nothing will be as good as his first album (the next 2 had equally impressive songs).

This one is just about as average as his last one...if not more so.

6/10

Allen-Lande: The Revenge

Allen-Lande is Russell Allen of Symphony X and Jorn Lande of Jorn and Master Plan. 2 of Progressive Metal's great front men combining voices and forces for the sake of greatness. 11/10 (The extra 1 is for the Album Art.)

I want to pick up their first one "The Battle" and the new one coming out soon "The Showdown".

Kate Bush - The Sensual World

7.5/10

Does not reach the heights of Hounds of Love, but still a good album.

Never much paid attention beyond hearing Starry Eyed a few times on the radio, but Ellie Goulding was AMAZING @ Glastonbury.

So, I got the album, "Lights".

Good album, best song imo is Salt Skin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3XXBJUshwc&fmt=18)

IMO it's "pop" and on that fact, it's nice there is good pop around, not all fucking rnb wannabes with fucking auto-tune.
