College Football 2007 Thread

Yeah I know the season is still a few months away, but magazines are coming out, and its starting to become a big disscussion on ESPN and the rosters are set. I will give you my preseason top 15 and my 5 Heisman finalists.

RP 06-09-2007 03:38 PM

PURDUE BOILERMAKERS!

mrslackalack 06-09-2007 03:46 PM

1. USC

Strengths: VERY deep and loaded on all sides of the ball.

Weaknesses: Losing Dwayne Jarrett and Steve Smith means new WR's have to step up (which they will)

2. Michigan

Strengths: The Big Three are all back (Henne, Hart, Manningham) great OL

Weaknesses: Lost a lot of guys on defense to the NFL so it will inexpirenced

3. LSU

Strengths: Might have the Nations best defense

Weaknesses: QB Matt Flynn has been a backup for several years and has big shoes to fill replacing Jamarcus Russell

4. West Virginia

Strengths: 2 Deadly Heisman Contenders Pat White and Steve Slaton

Weaknesses The defense gives up a lot of points

5. Louisville

Strengths: My Heisman Winner (QB Brian Brohm) Great WRs and RBs

Weaknesses: Lost sev key defensive players, defense is unproven and a New Head Coach they have

6. Florida

Strengths: Tebow is finally full time starter, lots of great young talent, great recruiting class

Weaknesses: lost a lot of defensive guys to the NFL like Michigan

7. UCLA

Strengths: Great momentum heading into season, return many key players

Weaknesses: QB battle has emerged between veteran starter Ben Olsen and Pat Cowan

8. Wisconsin

Strengths: Return many key players back

Weaknesses: lost Joe Thomas at OL, havent named a starting QB yet

9. Virginia Tech

Strengths: Great LB and CB crew, Brandon Ore is the best RB that the nation dont know about, the casual fans will be rooting for them

Weaknesses: Might be out of the title picture early with a Giant road game at LSU

10. Texas

Strengths: Limas Sweed the best WR in the country in my opinion, McCoy should be better

Weaknesses: With all the talent the secondary they were 99th in Pass Def now that their 3 best pass defenders are gone to the NFL the Pass Def might be one of the worst in the country

11. Oklahoma

Strengths: Great defense, Allen Patrick did well in AP's absence last year, have a great RB coming in as well thats compared to Reggie Bush

Weaknesses: No expirence at QB

12. Auburn

Strengths: Great Defense, Cox is a veteran QB

Weaknesses: Lost Irons at RB

13. Rutgers

Strengths: Many players return including Ray Rice, great recruiting class

Weaknesses: Lost leader Brian Leonard

14. Ohio State

Strengths: Lots of key guys on defense are back, RB Chris Wells might be better than Pittman

Weaknesses: lots of youth and inexpirence on the offensive side of the ball

15. Arkansas

Strengths: RUN-DMC is the best RB in the country, great offense.

Weaknesses: many top players from last season either went to the NFL or trnasferred

mrslackalack 06-09-2007 03:47 PM

5 Heisman Finalists

Brian Brohm QB Louisville (winner)
Darren McFadden Arkansas
Steve Slaton RB West Virginia

Michigan SHOULD do work this season, I mean look at all the talent they have coming back. They lost their best corner, but he got burned against all the top guys anyway so they should be able to replace him. Losing Woodley is gonna hurt them though, as well as Branch. It is Michigan though, I am sure they will reload.

Florida's offense should be fine, only thing is who is gonna be the sparkplug off the bench now that Tebow is running the show? Hopefully Tebow gets his shit kicked in though because he was homeschooled and I think home schooling is the most retard thing on the face of the Earth lol I dunno how their D will be, I assuming it will be reoaded but they did lose a lot. I don't see them winning the SEC again tho

mrslackalack 06-09-2007 09:48 PM

I am going to rank Confrences as well. The first is the SEC, which looks WIDE open and its the deepest its ever in. As several anylists have said, there is 10 out of the 12 teams in this league could make the SEC Title game. The sad part is only 8 teams of the 12 get bowl bids

I am hoping since Boston College has a new coach now they'll stop underachieving and actaully make it to the ACC Title game

mrslackalack 06-10-2007 10:25 PM

One preseason publication I read actually had BC as the ACC Champ.

BCWWF 06-10-2007 10:52 PM

I am most familiar with the Big 12 and overall I like your picks. Oklahoma and Texas are going to be the best two teams again but right now it's hard to say which one is the best. Oklahoma State has some awesome offensive players coming back and Missouri should easily have a top-5 national offense this year, but both are prone to slip ups. Barring a breakdown they could easily be in those positions though. OSU might have a harder time being third, since it will play head to head with Texas and Oklahoma, but while MU has Nebraska at home, they also have Oklahoma in Norman and Texas A&M at home, but a 9-3 season or even 10-2 is very possible.

mrslackalack 06-14-2007 11:13 PM

What is everybodys take on Notre Dame this season? I see them as a 9-4 8-5 type of year as they lost lots of players and no way should Darius Walker have went pro. Klausen could be something special for ND and he has a lot of hype but he might not start early on.

James Steele 06-18-2007 06:31 AM

Whoever wins the Red River Shootout will be in the National Championship game.

James Steele 06-18-2007 06:31 AM

Which means my SOONERS will break bitchboy McCoy in half.

I wouldn't be suprised if they do this year.

They got a lot of key personal back, for the first time since Bucknell they have a good coach (yes, I know what O'brien did for the school and how everyone loved coughlin)

Also, the new strength coach is from Auburn, his nick name there was Satin and he's already told the players he doesn't care if they hate him. Right now, they're just doing strength and conditioning and he's really pushing them.

Now, yes there is a chance it could case them to wear out early, I disagree, typically the teams in this great shape win the close games at the end of the season, something BC has always had trouble with.

Going to be a fun home season... Florida State, Miami, NC State.

Plus I think next year or the year after they start up with Notre Dame again and they have a pending deal for like 2010 and 2011 with USC.

mrslackalack 06-18-2007 10:07 PM

Which is HUGE for BC in national exposure and the BCS

BCWWF 06-18-2007 11:32 PM

Winner of the Red River Shootout could lose in the national championship, but I don't see either team winning it.

mrslackalack 06-18-2007 11:37 PM

I believe the National Title game will be USC vs 1 loss SEC/Big 10 Champ or a Undefeated BE team (WV, UL)

BC's has 2 major problems

1) is O'brien would have a brain fart and forget to look at the clock late in the game and blow a game they should win.

2) BC fans don't "travel well" this is why 2yrs ago BC had a better record then Clemson but Clemson got a better bowl game. Clemson fans travel huge and spend a lot of money, BC fans simply don't. For BC to have a shot at a big time bowl it's the ACC championship, otherwise they'll be at some little bowl we've never heard of, no matter how good they do.

Jesus Shuttlesworth 06-19-2007 05:13 PM

I know a kid on the BC team and his summer "break" was about 5 days. I guess you where right about the new strength coach lol

mrslackalack 06-19-2007 09:49 PM

lol

mrslackalack 06-19-2007 09:50 PM

RIP Indiana Coach Hep.

mrslackalack 06-19-2007 09:52 PM

It looked like he was turning Indiana around as last season they had a big win over Iowa and a impressive blowout over Mich St. that made them fire John L. Smith. a friend of mine thats a trainer at IU told me Coach Hep was an incredible person and that she thinks hes changed IU fb for the better.

mrslackalack 06-19-2007 09:54 PM

Its tragic that the Big Ten has had 2 head football coaches pass away in the past year.

That's actually pretty normal, they're doing strength and classes now, I don't think they're allowed to put on Pads until sometime in July and they I think get a break late July or Early August.

But yeah, they all say the new guy is working them a lot harder, I think it will turn out to be a good thing but we'll see.

He was amazing. So sad that he died. He's really turn this IU program face up and headed in the right direction. He's recruited some really good players this year. I really think this team is gunna make a bowl game this season and alot has to do with coach hoeppner

mrslackalack 06-20-2007 10:15 PM

Yeah I believe so RP because the only time UK played IU under Coach Hep he destroyed us. Indiana is def a sleeper team in the Big Ten considering their best players are young and they have a lot of motavation now. I see them possibly making a bowl and def pulling off an upset or 2.

Interesting rankings on the CFB teams on what they have done this decade thus far.

MTH15 08-03-2007 08:22 AM

VT is my favorate college. We Takin Over this year.

mrslackalack 08-03-2007 08:49 AM

They are my preseason ACC Champ and a legit National Title Threat if they can beat LSU in Baton Rouge early in the season.

Supreme Olajuwon 08-03-2007 11:36 PM

first rankings came out today

Boise State is 23rd. They're not even the highest ranked non-BCS team.

mrslackalack 08-04-2007 12:22 PM

I thought USC would be a uninamous selection for #1 but they werent at all.

Kris P Lettus 08-04-2007 12:32 PM

SEC is gonna be sick this year..

LSU and Arkansas are already in the top five in the coaches polls.. Bama should be good with Saban.. Urban Myers is a great coach and weill def take Florida back to a bowl game.. Soth Carolina should be good with Spurrier.. Kenntucky is supposedly gonna be decent this year..

SEC>*

Kris P Lettus 08-04-2007 12:32 PM

USC would be shit if they had any comp in their confrence..

Pac 10 is a f'n joke..

mrslackalack 08-04-2007 12:36 PM

haha Les Miles said the exact same thing basically.

mrslackalack 08-04-2007 12:38 PM

Herbstreit actually said the Pac-10 could be just as good as the SEC this season which I cant see at all because many are saying this is the most talented and deep the SEC has ever been.

mrslackalack 08-04-2007 12:39 PM

Plus Auburn, Tenn, and UGA should still be good as well.

mrslackalack 08-04-2007 12:41 PM

Every1 in the SEC but Florida had 2 losses in league play last season thats how deep the league is. Florida actually should have had 2 losses as well as South Carolina had them on the ropes but Florida blocked 2 FGs in a row to win by 1.

Kris P Lettus 08-04-2007 12:42 PM

Yeah and the SEC is constantly good..

Pac as good as the SEC??

Give me a f'n break..

Arizona
Arizona State
California
Oregon
Oregon State
Stanford
UCLA
USC
Washington
Washington State

Compared to:

LSU
Florida
Auburn
SC
Arkansas
Bama
Tenn
Kenn
Ole Miss
MSU
Georgia
Vandy

Come on..

mrslackalack 08-04-2007 12:48 PM

I guess Herb is hating on the SEC since his Buckeyes got destroyed by the Gators. The only postive SEC thing I have heard him say this season is the best QB in the country this season in his opinion was Andre Woodson of UK.

mrslackalack 08-04-2007 12:49 PM

This thread needs to become sticky.

I don't know about all that. I know you are an SEC dickrider and the Pac10 is pretty weak but USC is still LOADED with tons of talent. I think they would be a top team in any conference in the country, including the SEC

I guess people are quick to forget that USC absolutely romped Arkansas (you know, the team that played in the SEC Championship game) last year 50-14?

mrslackalack 08-04-2007 03:42 PM

That is a great point Stima but Ark didnt have Mcfadden in that game.

mrslackalack 08-04-2007 03:43 PM

Not saying Ark would have won with him, but the score would have been much closer than 50-14

yerp

Jesus Shuttlesworth 08-04-2007 06:38 PM

lol it was 50-14, not like it USC won by 10 points or something

Does McFadden play defense too? Because they did drop 50 on them...

SEC >* THO NOBODY CAN TOUCH ANYONE FROM THE SEC

Also, USC used a true freshman running back in that game but alright, McFadden was out so that makes USC shit if they where in the SEC.

Kris P Lettus 08-04-2007 07:04 PM

Dude, settle down..

USC wouldn't costantly be ranked number one in the coaches polls, every year, if they were in a division as good as the SEC..

You said the EXACT same thing last year about the Saints and the AFC..

STFU

Jesus Shuttlesworth 08-04-2007 07:34 PM

With the talent they've had they would be able to, if anything you should argue that if USC was in the SEC they wouldn't be able to pull as good of a recruiting class year after year because there is more competition for recruits. Nah fuck that though, USC would definitely be shit in the SEC.

Also, pretty slick telling me to shut the fuck up when you start it off by saying something stupid

mrslackalack 08-04-2007 09:54 PM

USC has the #2 SOS in the country this season so they will have earned their NC if they win it.

mrslackalack 08-04-2007 09:55 PM

My only concern with USC is losing all those great WRs they did like Smith and Jarrett but they always seem to reload with them.

Jesus Shuttlesworth 08-04-2007 09:55 PM

Nah that doesn't matter, they aren't in the SEC they are shit

mrslackalack 08-04-2007 10:07 PM

Crazy thing is the Big East won that trophy they give for the confrence that has the best bowl record that season.

Jesus Shuttlesworth 08-05-2007 12:29 AM

I don't put much stock into that thing since there are so many bowl games now one conference can catch a few good match ups and run away with it.

I am looking foward to seeing what happens w/ the Big East. I would've liked to see Michael Bush come back for his senior season, it would have made Louisville even that much better. I still think it will come down to Louisville and WVU for the Big East title though. I also wouldn't be surprised to see Rutgers lose 3 or 4 games this upcoming season.

Just heard that Matt Ryan of BC was named the ACC Pre-Season Player of the Year. Kinda surprising to see a guy from BC get something like that, ACC has been kinda down lately tho lol

I doubt that. They pulled the top player of last year's recruiting class out of Louisiana. I think there was a thread on it.

mrslackalack 08-05-2007 10:16 PM

yup there was a thread on that

mrslackalack 08-05-2007 10:19 PM

I think the Big East will come down to WV and UL as well. Rutgers will still be good and will prolly finish 3rd. South Florida might be in the mix as well as they return a lot from last years team that dominated WV at WV. Also dont count out Pitt who had a great recruiting class this year and is getting used to Wannstedts system and Cincy who returns some good talent and they destroyed Rutgers last season.

mrslackalack 08-05-2007 10:21 PM

LOL at Lee Corso ''Dustin Diamond has a better chance to win an Oscar than Kentucky ever does winning the SEC Championship''

While Kentuckys been medicore in their FB history they actually have a couple SEC titles as recently as 76.

mrslackalack 08-05-2007 10:23 PM

Every1 was like WHAT when Duke FB got a vote in the polls. I didnt know this but Spurrier votes for Duke every season out of respect because they gave him his first big shot at coaching College Football.

Yeah that doesn't matter though, who cares if USC gets a bunch of top recruits who go on to be 1st round picks in the NFL? They wouldn't be able to hang in the SEC

Jesus Shuttlesworth 08-24-2007 01:25 AM

Weatherford is the starter at FSU....it blows my mind how 2 out of the 3 "major" football powerhouses in the state of Florida haven't had a great QB in years (it's been like 10 years at this point for Florida State and like 4 for Miami)

mrslackalack 08-24-2007 03:17 PM

Joe Schad said that he thinks that South Florida actually could be the 2nd best team in the State of Florida after UF. He thinks they could be better than Miami and FSU.

mrslackalack 08-24-2007 03:18 PM

6 days till the season starts!

Jesus Shuttlesworth 08-24-2007 03:31 PM

FSU and Miami both have outstanding defenses, so they are both better than South Florida with or without a good offense IMO

mrslackalack 08-24-2007 04:32 PM

Great point made there because while FSU and Miamis offense has been Medicore the past few years their defenses have been great and contain many blue chip and hs all-american recruits. While USF has a great QB in Grothe who some are already comparing to Favre they dont have the defense like a Miami or FSU.

Supreme Olajuwon 08-25-2007 12:13 PM

mrslackalack 08-27-2007 11:58 AM

The college football section in my local paper had Florida preseason ranked SEVENTH in the SEC. They had LSU, Auburn, Tenn, Georgia, Arkansas, and South Carolina ranked ahead of them.

Jesus Shuttlesworth 08-27-2007 01:47 PM

Until South Carolina gets a real QB they will be average at best, I also got a feeling that Arkansas isn't going to be as good as last year but I dunno.

Really can't see UF finishing 7th, maybe 3rd or 4th

mrslackalack 08-27-2007 10:10 PM

Thats where I see them as well. The sleeper team to def watch out for is UK. While they usually have the worst luck in college football. They return almost everybody from their 8-5 Music City Bowl Winning team over Clemson. They have one of the nations best offenses and special teams and while the defense is not great its very young. Woodson/Little/Burton are as good as a QB/RB/WR set as you can find in the county this season. The only problem for UK this season will be their difficult schedule. They play Louisville, Tennesee, Florida, and LSU at home, and have road games at Georgia, Arkansas, and South Carolina

Waiting for Purdue vs Toledo.

Appalachian St look straight up faster then Michigan right now.

Jesus Shuttlesworth 09-01-2007 01:35 PM

Wish App State vs Michigan was on in my area

RP 09-01-2007 01:39 PM

Appalachian St is playing with incredible confidence. One receiver is faster then everyone on the field and there QB just leaped over a pile into the endzone for a td. Pretty incredible.
