(Warning: Rant) Comedy on TV/in movies today...

This was originally going to be a reply in the wrestling forum but it's better to post it here I'd say. It's a rant and it's late so I've probably fucked something up. I haven't edited it so there are a few things that still reference what was in the previous thread, the fact that I hate Conan O'Brien and most of the forum seems to love him.

-

Excuse me for not conforming to the forums' general consensus of what they consider "funny".

I'm not afraid to say it. Conan sucks, American Pie is one of the trashiest, worst franchises of all time and Will Ferrel is an overrated douchebag who, like many SNL alumni of the past 10 years, thinks he's the funniest thing ever and has to make shitty movie after shitty movie with the same fucking underlying story and the "kids" eat it up.

I'm a 90's/00's kid and the good shit stopped flowing around 97. It seems to me that the 80's and even 70's were the eras of awesome as far as comedy goes.

Now, if you like any of the things mentioned here, that's fine, "whatever floats your boat" as they say.

I've been watching the comedy scene in TV and movies over my lifetime, and once the 2000's hit every fucking comedy movie is cheap sex joke after cheap booze run after cheap laugh.

I understand that I have an odd taste in comedy and I accept it. I even admit that some of the things I watch are similar to some things listed here. I'd much rather watch a rerun of Three's Company, watch Leno or watch a classic like Ghostbusters than watch the trash that gets thrown in the movie theaters or on the "hip" talk shows like Conan.

I know I don't have to watch it, but the mainstream is so swamped with this shit that it's hard to avoid at least getting the jist of what this-or-that movie's comedy is based on.

Yeah, so this was just a rant and I know a lot of people won't agree (at least that's what I assume) but I'm just tired of hearing "Will Ferrel is the best shit evarz" and "LOLOLZ CONAN PRETENDED TO BE A PUPPET AGAIN! XD AND OMFG HE HAD THA MASTURBATING BEAR! OMFG HOW FUNNYZ"...

And before anyone even asks, a sampling of what I consider to be "funny"...

Ghostbusters
Three's Company
Drew Carey Show
Wayne's World
Ace Ventura
King of Queens
Jim Carey
South Park
SNL before 96 or so (It's okay right now for the most part)

So yeah, bash, talk, agree, disagree, I don't care I'm fucking tired.

Xero 05-25-2007 11:58 PM

Highlights for the lazy people:

Conan sucks
Will Ferrel = One Trick Pony
American Pie = Awful
Leno = The Man
1970-80's Sitcoms = Awesome
Most comedy on TV is shit
Me = Expecting a bit of shit for this but thought I'd get it out there

What Would Kevin Do? 05-26-2007 12:09 AM

It's all subjective anyway, so why bother?

Personally, I love Conan and I can't stand Leno at all. I'm not going to say you're wrong though. God forbid people disagree on what's funny.

RP 05-26-2007 12:16 AM

Ace Ventura and Waynes World were two of the worst movies i've ever seen

Drew Carey show sucked cause Drew Carey sucks.

Champion of Europa 05-26-2007 01:50 AM

You can't explain what makes certain things funny. If you laugh, you laugh.

I've only really got a problem with you if you like Epic Movie or Date Movie or its general ilk.

Then you're a god-damned idiot.

Blitz 05-26-2007 02:42 AM

So hugely wrong.

Mr Regal 05-26-2007 07:34 AM

Some of the best comedy ever created has happened over the last decade.

The Office
Arrested Development
South Park
Peep Show

I would think of more, but I'm hungover and can't make my brain work so....

Although i have to admit the bad outweighs the good.

Kane Knight 05-26-2007 08:09 AM

Conan doesn't suck, but he's massively overrated. Will Ferrel is like the least funniest guy ever. I laugh more at reels of famine.

Mr Regal 05-26-2007 08:51 AM

you sick fuck

Kane Knight 05-26-2007 09:03 AM

Oh, and these "the 90s/00s/whatever suck" arguments are retarded.

Mostly because, while most of the comedy Regal mentioned sucks as much ass as a Telletubby (Puprle or not), there's always a share of crap the "kids" will eat up before they grow up.

This shit's nothing that didn't happen in the 80s. I know. I was there. Cheap Sex jokes and booze runs? Yeah, they got that idea from the 70s and 80s.

ct2k 05-26-2007 09:07 AM

Funniest tv shows ever =

South Park
Royle Family
Phoenix Nights
The Office
The Simpsons

Shit like King of Queens or fucking Leno doesn't come close to this stuff

Mr Regal 05-26-2007 09:14 AM

Add Peep Show to that you son of a bitch:mad:

ct2k 05-26-2007 10:13 AM

Yeah Peep Show is good too.

But still, I think Phoenix Nights is probably overall the best sitcom ever. Just the amount of unbelievable gags, one liners, hidden jokes and random celebrity shoutouts is superb, not to mention the fact that it is so realistic at the same time.

What other show ever has namechecked Bob Carolgees, Jockey Wilson or Tony Knowles?:D

Oh, I know this, but personally, when I compare most later decades, the 80's had less shit and better stuff than the 90's and 00's.

But, again, as said, it's all subjective.

Kane Knight 05-26-2007 11:30 AM

It also helps that you're looking at one selectively, and the other rather thoroughly. Previous decades get filtered in our minds.

I'm not even arguing that it's subjective, because by definition, opinions on entertainment are subjective. I don't care about that, because that's usually the cry of a moron. It's a form of stating the obvious. What I am arguing is that it's a constant process.

The Royle Family depresses the fuck out of me.

But Ricky Tomlinson's laugh is fucking gold.

I can think of maybe 3 post-2000 comedy movie that I liked. I can name at least 8 from the 80's right off the bat.

It may be selective overall, which I will admit, but when it comes to movies I enjoyed, the 80's wins out.

PapaGeorgio 05-26-2007 01:01 PM

I can somewhat agree with what he is saying. I think part of the problem is people close to my age (college kids) tend to have a limited scope on what they see. So when they see a Will Ferrell movie or watch Donnie Darko/Boondock Saints they automatically make it out to be the best thing ever. But just because they overrated something doesn't mean it is terrible. Do I think Will Ferrell is terribly overrated, yes, but I can still laugh at his shit.

Addiitonally, I understand you point of nothing but dick and fart jokes, to take a line from Kevin Smith (who I am a fan of for the record). One of my favorite shows is The Joey Bishop Show, an older show from the 60's, or for more popular example a show like Honeymooners. The jokes on there are just so basic, yet they are fairly rare by today standards which make them hilarious to me. They also are much more pure, something shitty sitcoms lack today (According To Jim, etc).

Finally, I think your problem is you just need to expand your horizon. Watch some of the shows people mentioned above, they are all great. Go download The Larry Sanders Show series, start getting into the independent movie scene. But to be honest I'm not sure how much you'd like those, cause I generally hate a few of the shows you mentioned like Leno, but at same time love Ghostbusters. Also if you haven't watched TAXI, the tv show not the shitty movie.

Rammsteinmad 05-26-2007 03:29 PM

I acknowledge your post Xero. Not agreeing with it all, but not disagreeing either.

I just wanted to add that I've haven't seen much of Will Farell, but though he was funny in Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back.

Really? I could probably name more than three, and I'm the elitist fuck who hates everything. :p

The 80s are over, and so you've had chance to enjoy the best, ignore the worst, and sift through the diamonds in the rough.

Mercury Bullet 05-26-2007 05:25 PM

Two words: Dane Cook

Two more words: Is funny

PapaGeorgio 05-26-2007 05:26 PM

Two more words: but overrated

Kane Knight 05-26-2007 05:58 PM

Dane Cook has actually NEVER made me laugh. I say this in all seriousness.

I can't even agree he's funny, because he just doesn't do it for me. Period. I don't know what it is, either.

Jeritron 05-26-2007 06:33 PM

He's far from funny. I'm in KK's boat. The guy has never made me laugh. It seems like he's trying to hard and forcing it. He's like that kid you know that wants to be funny so bad but never is.

PapaGeorgio 05-26-2007 08:10 PM

I can acknowledge he is funny, but not nearly as funny as people make him out to be. I have seen a lot worse, and a lot better than him. It also depends on a persons sense of humor, some people like Carrot Top or Gallagher, while they may not be hilarious to me (Gallagher is funny but not so much Carrot Top) I can still recognize them as being funny.

But yeah, agree that Dane Cook is forcing out stuff sometimes. No reason for all the screaming and yelling, just doesn't work right for me. But much like my movie theory, I don't think the average person watches a wide variety of stand up comedy (shows or live). So they find something decent and overrate the fuck out of it. And the main thing that annoys me about these college kids who do this, I don't mind them having there own opinions on what they like. But they constantly quote/do impressions of these things (Will Ferrell, Family Guy, Borat, latest hit things) which truly annoys me. As one it's hardly ever creative or original, memorizing something that somebody else wrote and performed doesn't make you funny. And constantly hearing this shit over and over begins to carry over to the shows/movies/etc. and lessens the enjoyment of them. And these people are mostly get with the program trendy tools who hop on whatever the latest fad is. Example being Borat, so many were clueless he was a character before the movie (see: Ali G Show). Again, don't mind there ignorance to it, just that they act like huge fucking idiots about these type of things.

Yeah, expect I didn't live through the 80's...

Kane Knight 05-26-2007 10:35 PM

Yeah, except you didn't have to....

Kane Knight 05-26-2007 10:43 PM

Also, keep in mind I grew up on the Marx Brothers, the Three Stooges, Jack Benny, and so on. Bewitched was a comedy staple at my house. IT's not to say I didn't watch anything modern, but I mean, it was GROUCHO FFS. He said stuff that you still probably couldn't get away with on TV.

Musically, I as the same. The Who, the Beatles. Queen. Ritchie Valens. Doo Wop and R&B. Sam Cooke. The Coasters.

And while I love the best of the 70s, they had to be one of the worst decades EVER musically. Same's true for the 40s and 50s with TV. Thegreatest was brilliant. The worst? Up there.

Blitz 05-27-2007 02:53 AM

Dane Cook is the polar opposite of funny.

ct2k 05-27-2007 07:28 AM

As far as Will Ferrell goes....well he's hit and miss for me, sometimes I'm laughing out loud, others I'm wishing he'd shut up, so meh:-\

IC Champion 05-27-2007 11:44 AM

Arrested Development and The Office are two of the funniest shows I've ever seen.

Mr Regal 05-27-2007 11:53 AM

and peep show too....why the fuck is everyone shunning peep show.

Jizz cocks.

Indifferent Clox 05-27-2007 02:06 PM

I like conan I don't like most comedy on tv, I enjoy family guy south park, adult swim daily show colbert report, chapelle. I like woody allen and zazie de la metro.

XL 05-27-2007 02:25 PM

There's plenty of good comdey out there.

Personally I love Will Ferrall simply for Anchorman.
Peep Show is laugh out loud funny
Arrested Development is probably the most under appreciated/underrated show ever.
Phoenix Nights is one of the funniest shows ever
The Office ruled all (except prolly Phoenix Nights)
Extras is lol at points.

Here's a couple no one's mentioned...

The League of Gentlemen was oe of the funniest shows of the 90's.

And how can you not mention Curb Your Enthusiasm!??

Kane Knight 05-27-2007 05:15 PM

Evolution was 2000 or so, right? That was kickass (Sure, it was essentially Ghostbusters with aliens instead, but it was good).

Every Kevin Smith comedy since 2000 has been good, though J&SBSB, Clerks 2, and Jersey Girl do pale compared to his earlier stuff. Hell, Jersey Girl is brilliant if for no other reason than J-Lo's death...Otherwise, it's still pretty good.

Super Troopers, Saved, Nemo, Eurotrip. I'm not even going to go into anything obscure, foreign, or artsy. The 90s had an assload I could name--I watched more movies in the 90s than I do now, though. Hell, between Men in Tights and Kevin Smith, the 90s could have sucked ass otherwise and still worked out as a decent decade.

Stickman 05-28-2007 02:06 PM

I'd watch Leno and Lettermin over Conan everyday of the week.

Jon Kano 05-28-2007 02:59 PM

I wish operation good guys has more of a distribution and viewing. Its fucking gold and was made a good 5-6 years before The Office and you can tell Gervaise stole quite a lot from it.

Check it out online if you can find it, Operation Good Guys, its like a mockumentary about a squad of police officers and their operations and attempts to get better at policing. Fucking hilarious.

Reno 911? But yeah Gervais was also influenced heavily by Larry Sanders Show, which is pretty obvious.
