A little more info on gems:

Catch up on what we know so far, after the break!

Capcom said it's Magic: The Gathering meets Street Fighter.

Gems are equipped prior to a match and add special abilities or buffs to your character. Gems only add abilities when they are activated in a match. Activation requirements vary. You may need to land a certain number of normals or specials, or you may have to take a certain amount of damage.

Certain gems can be equipped in multiples, with activation requirements increasing for each successive gem. The enhancements also stack. For example, the first two Power gems add 10% each to attack power, while the third adds another twenty. When all three are activated, that enables a 40% damage boost.

There are also support abilities such as auto-guard and auto-throw break. Auto guard guards any attack, so long as you are able (i.e. not in recovery frames) but costs 1 bar of meter per blocked attack. If you have no meter while the auto-guard gem is active, it won't do anything.

Awesome. Sooner than I thought.

Khuntry 10-15-2011 03:42 AM

this game... is awesome.

Kalyx triaD 10-15-2011 03:50 AM

Says before I says again: Fighting game of 2012.

Drakul 10-16-2011 02:43 AM

I've been wondering if gems and Pandora can be used simultaneously or if Pandora deactivates gems.

Pandora gives you a huge power boost and red gems give you power boosts as well, the more red gems you use, the bigger the boost.
So, what if I play as Zangief, use a power gem in every slot, activate them all and then activate Pandora? Zangiefs SPD does about 50% damage when he's using Pandora, even without gems activated.

Would I be in some kind of "one hit KO" mode if I had both activated?

Kalyx triaD 10-16-2011 03:39 AM

I remember seeing a Pandora mode with orbs flying around you. I suspect Pandora activated all your Gems at once. So yeah... you'd be a god. That makes Pandora a bit more dangerous, I guess. Still needs more time.

Drakul 10-16-2011 04:01 AM

The cool thing is that I could go that route or I can use his built in strength and use the gems to make him move really fast, making it easier to grab people.
Same for other characters, if Akuma is in, he's always pretty speedy, so you could just stuff him full of whatever gems will increase his health bar and be much more of a challenge for whoever you're fighting.

Kalyx triaD 10-16-2011 12:01 PM

Buffing your weakness character or skill-wise would be a good idea. I wanna know what the other Gems are. 45 seems like a lot of ideas.

Drakul 10-16-2011 12:20 PM

They are probably including multiples.

Drakul 10-18-2011 08:20 AM

30 min interview about Gems that I didn't watch:
<iframe width="640" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/u65y6Grl3m4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Run down by someone that did watch it:

• There will be no option to disable gems in SFxT. Ono said they're too important to the gameplay.

• Gems are designed to be complex — for advanced players. They really want you to think about which gems will fit your play style and approach.

• Preset gem packages for new players will help them along, though.

• The DLC load times for SSF4 AE are partially a problem with the infrastructure on XBL/PSN. Capcom is aware that this is an issue, though.

• Not all gems in SFxT will be opened up from the get go, DLC and other stuff will make more of them available. There will be a starter set available right out of the gate.

• There are two kinds of gems, one is passive and another is active. One type is geared towards new players, that help with blocking and throwing, and another type of gems that are for high level players, the latter of which adding a more strategic element.

Drakul 10-21-2011 07:21 AM

A few bits of info from a 9 minute audio interview with Seth Killian.

Quote:

• Gems are specific to each character on your team in SFxT. i.e. If you have Ryu and Kazuya on your squad, each fighter can have their own set of gems, they don't have to share the same 5.

• He adds that gems can be used to help balance the game yourself, adding relatively small bonuses to your attributes.

• Seth mentions that people haven't had a chance to go hands on with the gem system, but he understands there's not that much information out there. He hopes people check it out before they jump the gun.

Eventhubs says it's clearly this character:

Another thing I saw on Tuesday, on Street Fighters Facebook page:

Quote:

Who's ready for Halloween? Street Fighter's Vega and Tekken's King stay ready. You have to respect the commitment.
Maybe it's nothing, maybe Vega will be reveal on Halloween.

Captain of Fun 10-28-2011 02:53 AM

She's a good fit for this game.

Funky Fly 10-28-2011 01:52 PM

Win. Some of my Tekken favourites are in. Still waiting on Bruce, Bryan and Eddy.

Captain of Fun 10-28-2011 05:32 PM

I'd say Bruce is unlikely, but Bryan and Eddy are two of the most populare characters in the series. No way do they get left out.

Kalyx triaD 10-28-2011 09:48 PM

I wouldn't say they're that popular over Jin and Nina.

Captain of Fun 10-29-2011 02:06 AM

I said two of the most popular. Not THE most popular.

Drakul 10-29-2011 03:20 AM

Is the LE up for pre order on any US sites? I can't see it on any UK sites yet.

Also, he adds that it's possible not to select any gems before a match, but there isn't a no gems option which locks them out of play.

This is a really good write up if you're interested in more details about the gem system. Here's a snip.

The Money Specter

How players will be able to get gems has also been a major topic of player discussion, with rumors suggesting microtransactions or grinding will be necessary.

"At this point we're still sort of figuring that stuff out," says Killian. "The game comes with some gems, some of them will be available as preorder bonuses and things like that." Some may be available packaged with DLC, as well.

"There's also worry about this guy [that] has more money and buys the special edition -- will he have an advantage over me?" The answer, says Killian, is no. "The gems, in the way we've approached them, are balanced against each other."

"If one gem has a bigger damage bonus, it has harder activation conditions."

Drakul 11-01-2011 04:21 AM

Pandora could be cut.

Here is what Seth had to say.

Pandora [mode] right now I would say is pretty weak-sauce. I would not activate it. We're still playing with it and trying to figure [it] out... This is not the final form.

We're going to try to make Pandora more interesting or just cut it, I'm not above cutting it even though we just announced it.

So they might cut Pandora and it turns out you can start a match without selecting any gems. I get the feeling the community bitching about every little thing that isn't "tourney worthy" is a big factor in those design choices. Which is stupid.

It's good when a company listens to the fanbase but do they have to listen to the wrong things? Gems were supposed to be a big deal in the game but now it seems they aren't. They can't be, if you can play without them. Pandora was supposed to be a big "unholy gamble" mechanic but they might just get rid of it, though I hope they don't. I'd rather then just fixed it up a bit.

Maybe, instead of designing the game to what a small section of the people that play it want, Capcom could tell those people to adapt.

If they want to play as Ryu with in a generic, vanilla match. Go play SFII or SFIV.

Kalyx triaD 11-01-2011 11:42 AM

I'd just make the timer longer, perhaps relative to how much life your possessed partner had at the time. It's a cool idea, but the timer is short and more property adjustments should happen to allow more chances to open somebody up (like unblockable status on certain attacks).

Boomer 11-01-2011 12:07 PM

All this online hate about the gem system is stupid. The game is like five months out, and no one has even played a demo with the gem system implemented. I will definitely be upset if the gem system is ignored by the tournament scene.

Kalyx triaD 11-01-2011 12:39 PM

The DLC/preorder thing is what really set people off (and I sympathize a bit), Capcom got carried away there. If the Gems were all stock and unlocked as you go, like getting better versions of a certain Gem after a while, people would be more accepting I think. Why would you say you need something and then charge premium for some? Of course that would draw lines in the sand (not only in the tourny scene).

And yeah some people don't like the Gems in general. Fuck em. Not every game has to be 'tourny viable'.

FPS games can do it with guns and racers can do it with cars. RDR did it with one of its DLC packs. If you bought a certain pack (I forget which) you got access to guns in Free Roam that those without the pack couldn't use. The loading screen even tells you that hitting someone who hasn't bought the tomahawk with the tomahawk would kill them in one hit.

I don't think anyone kicked up a fuss about that (even when one of them was an explosive rifle. One bullet from that and you are blown to mush.) or when someone used their preorder bonus super car in a Forza game in an online race.

If it worries them so much, tourney players can just not use the preorder gems in tournies and make a list of which gems they can use. Maybe whichever gems give the smallest boost in speed/strength/vitality etc.

As for Pandora, my only problem with it was that you just had to block or run away for 7 seconds and the Pandora user would die. I just read today that another way around it would be to activate your Pandora a second or two after your opponent activates theirs so they die first.
So if they could sort that out, we'd be good to go.

Maybe have Pandora only usable by whoever activates it first in a match. Maybe have guarding a bad choice with a high enough chip damage from Pandora attacks to give the opponent reason to try and fight instead.

Kalyx triaD 11-01-2011 03:45 PM

Fuck it, all Pandora attacks should be unblockable. Then I wouldn't care about the time limit and shit gets hype/terrifying real quick.

Drakul 11-01-2011 03:51 PM

Unblockable Pandora Hadoukens. Chilling.

Captain of Fun 11-01-2011 03:53 PM

Gems offer so much strategy and depth. Pussy ass tourney players can go fuck themselves. TPWW crowd is where it's at.

Hell, the Dramatic Battle thing with two characters on your ass (especially both human controlled) will lead to way worse unblockable set-ups. Pandora might as well be crazy.

Drakul 11-01-2011 04:25 PM

I've already seen what my future holds when my opponent has both his guys on screen at once. Ryu on one side, Ken on the other. Hadoukenfest.
It's actually in one of the trailers that shows off having both characters on screen.

Kalyx triaD 11-01-2011 04:30 PM

More likely your big guys are gonna deal with tandem jump attack + low attack strings. Fireballs from both sides will be a cake walk.

Drakul 11-01-2011 04:34 PM

I'm hoping it will be. I guess a spinning clothesline should deal with something like that. I wonder if they'll have a "range" gem. So your attacks have a bigger range. Or would that be a bit too much?

Kalyx triaD 11-01-2011 04:36 PM

That may be possible, since they said they have other Gems of different types. Probably have throw range extenders as well.

Drakul 11-02-2011 02:21 AM

I guess it depends how far they want to go with gems. The "safe" option would be to have gems only effect attributes like speed and stamina.
If they wanted to go all out, they could add in things like increasing your range, maybe an armour gem that decreases the damage you take when you get under 30% or something and walk through projectiles after you get hit by 3 or 4 in a certain time limit.

I'm not bumping the SSFIV thread so I'll put this here:
<object style="height: 390px; width: 640px"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/tsCN7bkvL_k?version=3&feature=player_detailpage"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/tsCN7bkvL_k?version=3&feature=player_detailpage" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="360"></object>

Emperor Smeat 11-08-2011 06:32 PM

Capcom assures potential consumers that they have zero plans for a Super or yearly edition for SFxT and instead the game will be supported just with DLC like they had promised but failed with MvC 3.

Also confined is these DLC updates will mostly be patches and maybe colors/outfits instead of just new characters and/or modes.

http://www.egmnow.com/articles/news/...e-dlc-updates/

Drakul 11-09-2011 02:06 AM

Seth has said there are a lot of characters still to come, including old characters that have yet to come back. SF1 characters, maybe?

I'm thinking the next two SF guys will be Vega and M.Bison, though my reason is a little weak.

The Street Fighter Facebook page made mention of SFxT on Halloween saying King of Tekken and Vega of Street fighter are ready for Halloween all year round.

Then, yesterday, they made a SFxT post asking who was the better villan, Heihachi or Bison.

Ok, it's a little weak, like I said, but it is odd that the last two times they made a SFxT post it contained two SF guys that haven't shown up and would go togethor as a team (Team Shadowloo).

Drakul 11-11-2011 02:42 AM

Okay, everyone I want is in the game except Sodom. If he gets in, I'll be completely happy with the entire game.

I need Vega too so my brother and I can team up online.

Kalyx triaD 11-11-2011 04:57 AM

R.Mika. I recall her being closer to Fuerte than a grappler (Alpha 3 was a long time ago, need to reference vids).

Maki from Final Fight would be fun.
