My computer's being all kinds of ridiculous...

So I've got Microsoft Security Essentials. It found a couple issues the other day and removed them. No biggie. But soon after. I realized I couldn't get online. It just stays "identifying".

At this point, I noticed MSE's real-time protection was off and when I try to turn it on, it stalls for a minute before saying it couldn't turn real-time protection on. (Error code: 0x8000705b4)

I then noticed my firewall was off as well. When I try to turn it on it tell me it can't (Error code 0x80070424)

So I try making sure windows update has updated everything. I click to open it and it just stalls for about a minute and when it finally comes on and I try to check for updates, it tells me it can't because it's not turned on.

After looking up fixes online for a bit, I finally gave up and did a system restore. Tried every available restore date and each time, it came back saying it couldn't complete successfully.

My computer was running fine a few days ago so I'm guessing there's one thing that fucked all this up. I just can't figure out what it is and I am not exactly computer savvy.

Anyone have any ideas, TP dub??? :-\

Oh and if it's important, I'm running Windows 7

Pretty sure you have a virus.

It might not be the same virus as above, but the procedure to possibly remove it is something I would do.

Trying this now.

#1-norm-fan 02-24-2012 09:55 PM

Downloaded mbam on another computer and put it on with the update. As soon as I started the scan, it said it had to shut down. :-\

How about in safe mode?

#1-norm-fan 02-25-2012 12:56 AM

Tried safe mode too. Same deal.

If it means anything, I did a full scan with MSE again and nothing came up.

Like I said, this started after I did a scan and removed a virus so I'm guessing the removal of that virus somehow messed something up?

This is going to be a weird question, but have you frequented Pornhub at all recently?

I was on there id say a year ago and caught a virus that did exactly what you are describing. It masks the firewalls and will not let you do any sort of scan whatsoever to rid yourself of it, even in safe mode.

Also, when you scan with windows defender it finishes your scan quickly with a lot less files scanned then your computer has and I believe says you need to download some antivirus or buy some upgrade or some bullshit.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I had to reformat.

Hmm. Pornhub is not one of my go-to porn sites. lol. I may have been there somewhat recently though.

But, dammit. Reformat huh? I wouldn't even know where to start.

Do you have your windows disk?

Purgatory 02-25-2012 08:43 PM

If your PC came with a Master Restore Disc, just throw that in and reboot. The PC should prompt and ask you what you want to do. There's a non-destructive option, which basically partitions your hd and puts your personal files there, then reinstalls your PC to factory settings (differs a bit according to PC sometimes). Then, theres the total and complete wipe option that totally restores your PC to the day you turned it on for the first time.

It's a shitty option, I hated doing it personally, but it's the only way to fix some problems.

El Fangel 02-25-2012 08:55 PM

The virus infects System32 files from what I know. A computer repair technician and myself spent hours trying everything short of reformating before we had to.

#1-norm-fan 02-25-2012 09:58 PM

Yeah, my computer's a netbook. No disk.

El Fangel 02-25-2012 11:11 PM

Out of my field of expertise then. sorry man.

There are many ways to install windows without CD/DVD, however the best way is by creating a windows [7, vista or xp] bootable USB drive.

Creating a Windows 7 [ Vista or XP] bootable USB drive in a few easy steps.

Requirements:
Windows 7 ,or Vista or XP ISO
4GB+ USB Pen drive (for windows 7 or vista) or 2 GB (for windows XP)
UNetbootin tool, Download here http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ [...] latest.exe and save it. (is free software)

(backup any data on the USB, as it will be formatted)

Step 1: Insert USB pen drive into the USB port

Step 2: From the Start menu, go to My computer, right click on the USB drive, then select Format. In format windows, under File System choose NTFS. then click Start. Once complete close the window.

Step 3: Open the UNetbootin tool (from the location you saved it in), when the the program opens up, 'Diskimage' [in the middle] should be selected . Now click on 3 dots [...] to browse
for your Windows 7, Vista, or XP ISO image file.

Step 4: At the bottom of the Unetbootin windows , the setting should be

Type: USB Drive
Drive: for this, you choose your correct usb drive letter

Step 5: Start the process by clicking OK

Wait as the ISO is extracted to your USB drive; once is done, you will have a bootable Windows 7/Vista/XP USB drive .

Your USB drive is ready to boot and install Windows.
...

Remember you need to change the boot priorty in the Bios, change it to USB (from the HDD or CD ROM/DVD drive)

I have little to no experience with net books, so had to hunt around for this. Seems like it should work if done correctly.

#1-norm-fan 02-26-2012 01:07 PM

Gonna give this a try. Thanks
