What Pulling Back The Curtain REALLY Means

pyroandballyhoo.com

Let me tell you what drives me absolutely crazy about Dixie Carter — she’ll get an idea, minutes later she’ll put her idea over to everybody in the office, and within hours, shes talking about that idea on interviews and through social media.

By week two, the idea is already dead.

Look, let me first say — I HAVE NUMEROUS WEAKNESSES AND FLAWS. Maybe too many to even mention. However, I am constantly working on my shortcomings every single day, even at the age of 54. It’s call “learning: from your mistakes”. It’s something that we all try to do because we’re NOT perfect, and FAR from it. But you live and learn. That’s what the trials and tribulations in life are all about. In working with Dixie for over 10 years, the inability to attempt to strengthen her weaknesses has not only hurt her company, but more importantly it has eliminated her credibility. Over the years, when Dixie builds up a huge forthcoming announcement concerning her company, we have been trained to know that her words and promises will be empty before they even come out of her mouth.

Case in point: “TNA is going to pull back the curtain”.

Truly, does Dixie even understand what that means before she says it? I had Nigel McGuinness on The Swerve a few weeks ago, and in talking about his LA FIGHTS reality-based wrestling concept, Nigel talks about storylines that are true to life in wrestling in 2015. He talks about wrestlers dealing with injuries, concussions, perhaps coming back early to work for monetary reasons. He then goes on to discuss the idea of telling the story of a gay performer in a male testosterone driven business. In other words, he made a statement concerning how the storytelling would be different with his new wrestling project, and then he went on to give examples.

Dixie, in turn, talks about “pulling back the curtain” without explaining what that means besides “cameras being everywhere backstage”, as they’ve been in wrestling for almost the last 20 YEARS NOW! That’s not new — been there, done that. So in pulling back the curtain, what exactly does she mean? Well, I would have to think we got our answer last night when the “secret cameras” caught Low-Ki and Samoa Joe trying to enter the building, which they had already been in, so I guess it would technically be a “re-enter”, wearing Halloween masks. Why the masks, you ask? Because funny masks have always been a trademark when it comes to bad, fake, unbelievable, insult-the-intelligence-of-your-audience wrestling.

Are you guys kidding me? Where was the curtain pulled back last night? When we saw a shot of John Gaburick and Matt Conway sitting at the guerrilla position? Was that it? Or perhaps it was seeing MVP “get mad” after Bobby Lashley jacked him up. Yeah, we CERTAINLY have never see that before.

Dixie, stop saying things you’re going to do when you have ZERO intention of doing them. It’s just getting to the point of being old and tired. You want to know what pulling the curtain back really means? Here are some examples that I’m going to give you, ABSOLUTELY FREE, because you would never get these ideas pitched by your own writers.

THE SALARIES OF THE BOYS. WHY DOES WRESTLER A MAKE MORE THAN WRESTLER B.

WRESTLERS WORKING WITH INJURIES BECAUSE THEY CAN’T AFFORD NOT TO.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT TOWARDS FEMALES IN THE WORKPLACE.

DISGRUNTLED WRESTLERS WHO HAVE ISSUES WITH THE CREATIVE TEAM.

DISGRUNTLED WRESTLERS WHO HAVE “REAL” ISSUES WITH YOU.

WRESTLERS BEING PAID SLAVE WAGES AND NOT LIKING IT.

“INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS” WHO ARE HAVING PROBLEMS AFFORDING THE NECESSARY HEALTH CARE FOR THEIR FAMILIES.

WRESTLERS FAILING DRUG TESTS.

WRESTLERS BEING SUSPENDED FOR FAILING DRUG TESTS.

WRESTLERS BEING “COVERED” WHEN FAILING DRUG TESTS.

SEEING THE ACTUAL “DRUG TESTING”.

THE IMPACT THAT BEING AWAY FROM FAMILY HAS ON THE PERFORMERS.

THE INFIDELITY THAT GOES COMES ON THE ROAD.

WRESTLERS ADDICTION TO PRESCRIBED PAIN MEDS.

WRESTLERS CONTACTING HEPATITIS C.

WRESTLERS CONTRACTS NOT BEING RENEWED.

FRIENDS BACKSTABBING FRIENDS TO PROTECT THEIR SPOT.

FRIENDS BACKSTABBING FRIENDS TO TAKE THEIR SPOT.

Is that enough or would you like me to go on? THAT is pulling back the curtain. Those are the REAL issues in professional wrestling today. What — are you telling me they don’t exist? I literally came up with that list as quickly as I could write it because I dealt with every one of those issues throughout my career in the business. Every GOD FORSAKEN one of them! You say you’re going to “pull back the curtain” — then THAT’S where you go! If not, and you have no intention to do so, THEN SIMPLY DON’T SAY IT!!!

Guys re-entering the building, playing trick-or-treat is NOT REAL. It is silly, stupid, immature, and not what any wrestling fan wants to see. It’s 2015 — you have an opportunity to finally put your company on the map, by daring to be different. Latex masks aren’t different.

My advice? Just think before you speak. It’s really that simple. Are we capable of doing what I’m about to say, or,should I perhaps just think a bit more on it? The problem with wrestling today is that NOBODY knows how to do reality TV, outside of the guys who write Total Divas. Those guys get it, and the reason why is that they’re from the world of television, and not bad, fake wrestling.

Now you can either get pissed by what I just said or…admit your failure to produce, and try to correct it. That’s up to you.

Trick or freakin’ treat.

Russo calling something silly and immature, there's an irony there.

..... So people are complaining about the new look/ style of Impact? Personally I like it. It's a little "different", a lot of people will say TNA is trying to rip off "Lucha Underground" but where Underground is more of a dramatic/ almost Novella like feel, Impact is suppose to blur the lines between wrestling and real life. We all know it's fake, but you still watch tv to be entertained and that's what TNA is trying to be, a different form of entertainment

SlickyTrickyDamon 01-11-2015 03:11 PM

GORILLA position. Not Guerrilla. Vince Russo needs to get kicked in the external occipital protuberance!

Theo Dious 01-11-2015 03:25 PM

STOP ENCOURAGING THIS TWAT.

el bobbo 01-11-2015 07:09 PM

How does Vince Russo make money these days?

Shisen Kopf 01-11-2015 09:21 PM

Fuck these meltzer sheep. Great article.

Mr. Nerfect 01-12-2015 04:17 AM

He's got some points. It's hard to get enthused about TNA, even though it has supposedly been quite good for a little while now. A large part of that has probably been getting rid of Russo.

#1-norm-fan 01-12-2015 04:30 AM

One thing TNA is doing right is they seem to be letting guys sink or swim on their own promo-wise and not having writers write out the same generic promo for everyone on the roster like WWE seems to do. No one is gonna get over on delivering some shitty writer's boring promo. They need to just let guys improvise and see who can step up.

Mr. Nerfect 01-12-2015 05:21 AM

The promo style in TNA does feel more natural. Even guys like Jeff Hardy stink it up less, because they get to be more organic.

don't think he realises that "pulling back the curtain" means legitimising wrestling and restoring the suspense of disbelief

CSL 01-13-2015 11:21 AM

heard somebody describe Russo as "an annoying petulant child" recently, this seems to fit in with that. The emphasising the "pulling back the curtain" idea is dumb if they aren't going to specifically try and do something a bit different with it but he knows what they mean by it, that ridiculous list of things in capital letters is just point-scoring with "the internet"
