Kanye West: Total Douchebag?

"I realize that my place and position in history is that I will go down as the voice of this generation, of this decade, I will be the loudest voice," he said in an interview on Wednesday. "It's me settling into that position of just really accepting that it's one thing to say you want to do it and it's another thing to really end up being like Michael Jordan."

The Grammy-winning rapper-producer said Justin Timberlake had a chance to be music's MVP, but hasn't put out enough material. (Timberlake's last album was in 2006, while West released a CD last year and is releasing his latest — "808s and Heartbreak" — on Nov. 24.)

"There were people who had the potential to do it but they went on vacation, so when Justin went on vacation I made albums," he said. "And it just came out to be that."

West, 31, said life has been difficult since his mother's death. Donda West died last November after having plastic surgery.
"I'm just going through balancing that. And I always used to have that support system, you know. My mom would be there; no matter what, she was there before everything," he said. "We were together for like 30 years. And you know now when I'm on that stage and I look out and I say, 'What am I going to do with the rest of my life?' Like when does a real life start?' Because I have sacrificed real life to be a celebrity and to give this art to people, which is great. It is great that I was able to do that, I'm not trying to shun that in any way, but it's definitely a Catch-22 and it's bittersweet."

Yeah, he is a total d-bag.. He is mad cocky and arrogant, but can still make a bad ass beat..

I don't ever buy his albums though..

ct2k 11-15-2008 10:55 AM

He makes pop music, damn good pop music

BigDaddyCool 11-15-2008 11:21 AM

Maybe it is because I only listen to the Rock station and avoid watching Mtv, but I barely know who this guy is.

ct2k 11-15-2008 11:22 AM

BDC you're a liar and a thief

Kris P Lettus 11-15-2008 11:29 AM

BDC, you are so full of shit..

Even if what you said was true, why would you post about it??

I don't follow wrestling closely, have I ever popped into the RAW thread and been like "I don't watch wrestling, so I have no idea what you guys are talking about"??

No, I don't, cause that would be pointless and stupid..

.44 Magdalene 11-15-2008 11:30 AM

There's actually a handful of posters that do that

.44 Magdalene 11-15-2008 11:30 AM

"TNA? People still watch this shit?"

BigDaddyCool 11-15-2008 11:44 AM

I mean I know he is that guy that said Bush doesn't care about black people after the hurricane. And I've heard in other threads that guy is a cockbag. But I'm not familiar with his music. And I can post in whatever thread I want.

Kris P Lettus 11-15-2008 11:50 AM

I'm pretty sure you've heard his songs because they are used in main stream media all the time..

Sure, you can post in any thread you want.. Doesn't make it any less pointless and stupid though..

BigDaddyCool 11-15-2008 11:54 AM

I'm sure I've heard his songs too, just wouldn't know them.

Kris P Lettus 11-15-2008 12:02 PM

LOL @ you being too cool for pop culture

.44 Magdalene 11-15-2008 12:05 PM

To be honest, about the only song of his I recognize instantly is the one that has Daft Punk playing in the background. I don't watch many music videos since losing access to IMF, and I don't listen to stations that would probably play Kanye West, though. Just not really the sort of music I bother with.

Kris P Lettus 11-15-2008 12:08 PM

I love Hip Hop, but not pop..

LOL you hypocrite.

Anyway, BDC saw "douchebag" and was immediately attracted to the thread. He can't help it.

And Kanye is a massive douchebag, at least in public. I don't know him personally, and can't help but think he's pulling a PT Barnum on the wigger community.

Kris P Lettus 11-15-2008 02:30 PM

How am I a hypocrite??

Jeritron 11-15-2008 02:59 PM

Any of you ever consider that this is his 'gimmick' and although he's likely very cocky, he probably does and says this stuff on purpose to further his media image and create publicity? It has worked very well thus far and I think it's obvious that at some point he began to run with it.

Champion of Europa 11-15-2008 03:01 PM

I enjoy his music and could care less about how he acts.

Jeritron 11-15-2008 03:09 PM

Yea I agree with CoE. It's not really my job to run personality judgement on people. There are tons of celebrities who are cocky as hell, and arrogant. Some probably are more so but they image they convey is less authentic. All that matters to me is what music he releases since I don't really know him and he's not exactly in my life other than an occasional soundbite.

He doesn't do or say anything that's morally or ethically wrong. It's not like an actor comitting a heinous crime, or an athlete being caught taking steroids. It's just a guy acting like a prick and everyone takes exception to it because of what we consider admirable in people's personalities.
OJ Simpson and Chris Benoit are douchebags.
Can't see this being really important to anything he does or anyone who listens to music. So he's cocky and a 'douchebag'. Pete Townsend is a pedophile and has been caught, but I don't see anyone calling him a douchbag or rebuking his music.

LoDownM 11-15-2008 03:21 PM

The only song anyone will remember of Kanye's is Through the Wire in 15 years.

DrA 11-15-2008 03:35 PM

What a wonderful decade to be the voice of.

No way..

He has had way bigger "pop" hits than that..

Bad Company 11-17-2008 12:01 AM

Well, it was either him or the Ting Tings

Jeritron 11-17-2008 12:05 AM

It was between him and the Teryaki Boys

Another spot on assessment brought to you by Jeriton.

Anyways, for all the bragging and cockiness the guy puts on one hell of a show. I went to see his concert on Saturday night and it was nothing short of awesome.

I'm not a fan of the 'cockiness' but see a lot of it as tounge in cheek. At one point he says how on reviewer had said that his show was the "greatest hip-hop show they had ever seen" and he questions why it's not the "greatest show, period". TBH the guy has a point on that. I've seen Muse who were heralded as the 'Best Live Act' at some point this year and what he did blew them clean out of the water.

.44 Magdalene 11-17-2008 03:09 AM

Being a douche for the press it gets him doesn't really make him less of a douche.

'great' and 'hip-hop' don't belong in the same sentence.

No, the exact opposite. I realize I'm a fat accountant. That is lame. So I might aswell execpt my lameness and hate pop culture because I'm not accepted in it or whatever.

GD 11-17-2008 09:28 AM

I liked his song with Mayer. Actually that was the only Kane west song I ever liked.
