When did you realize Vince McMahon owned the WWF

I started watching the WWF in 1987 when I was 5 and probably didn't realize Vince owned the company till at the earliest 1996.

Always thought he was just an announcer.

Nowhere Man 08-14-2014 09:06 PM

I didn't get into wrestling until well into the Attitude Era, so Vince was always "the guy who owns the place" to me.

Bad News Gertner 08-14-2014 09:11 PM

It's crazy thinking Vince is just this annoying announcer and yet he's a fucking multi millionaire allbthat time

Shisen Kopf 08-14-2014 09:42 PM

The steroid scandal in 1992. The had a report about it on Hard Copy or one of those tabloid shows and it said Vince was the owner. Lost all respect for Jack Tunney after that. He was just on air talent :(

Yeah not to be all "I knew any before anyone else" but right before they launched the WBF there was an article in one my my dads magazines he showed me. I learned then that he was the owner, and in better shape than just about every wrestler as well. so that was like 1990

Ol Dirty Dastard 08-14-2014 10:38 PM

1996-1997 when my dad told me, and it still didn't sink in fully until after the screwjob.

Emperor Smeat 08-14-2014 11:12 PM

When ECW "invaded" the WWF and Heyman kept praising Vince for allowing them air time.

#1-norm-fan 08-15-2014 04:32 AM

I think I knew for as long as I can remember because my dad and grandma were wrestling fans and I knew important stuff like that.

Pretty sure it was mentioned in the papers here when they did Summerslam in '92, I don't think I gave any real thought to it ever though.

Innovator 08-15-2014 07:27 AM

Yeah I think 97 when Bret started cutting promos at Vince complaining

Innovator 08-15-2014 07:28 AM

I realized how smart it was putting himself as the lead announcer, being able to control the amount of hype each person gets

Sixx 08-15-2014 08:25 AM

Attitude Era. That's when I started watching WWF. Took me a while to figure it out, though, cause it was on German sports television called DSF, so I didn't really know what the promos were about or anything.

SlickyTrickyDamon 08-15-2014 08:53 AM

When he started getting in trouble in the steroid trial and media appearances around that time involving sexual scandals.

SlickyTrickyDamon 08-15-2014 08:54 AM

Have you guys seen recent pics of Vince? He looks way skinnier right now. I think he might be pretty sick.

Innovator 08-15-2014 09:25 AM

That or he thought "I'm almost 70, I shouldn't be carrying so much weight"

I never understood why he was complaining to Vince until after SurvivorSeries when Mr Macnahon was born with the Bret screwed Bret speech. I am pretty niave.

Seth82 08-15-2014 12:23 PM

I think I figured it out around the time I first got on the net.

That was like 1996. I found out that Vincent. J. McMahon was the promoter of the WWWF and it all sorta clicked into place.

Fignuts 08-15-2014 11:58 PM

Steroid scandal

OverTaker 08-18-2014 08:11 AM

Austin Vs McMahon is when I put it all together.
