So I Have A Virus

So a few days ago, I began noticing that certain words were becoming links to adverts and also adverts being placed all over sites where no adverts had been before. I mentioned this in the "100,000" Replies thread and I was informed by Hollywood Hasney that is was Spyware. Then I was told by Guru Dave to install Spybot.

Well, along with installing and running Spybot, I also did a MalwareBytes scan, and both found stuff and I thought that was the end of my problem. But it wasn't. I still have random text being linked to adverts and advert bars on pages. Along with that, my computer is beginning to run slower and slower every day. I also tried doing a system restore but nothing changed.

I don't know how I manged to get the virus as I only ever really visit the same four or five sites every day. I don't know what else I can download to get rid of this, so any help would be much appreciated. :y:

There's 2 other things to try. One is to try a different browser or to check the add-ons of your existing browser. You may have installed some kind of add-on that does that for you.

The other is to go into SpyBot and look in the options. There's one to do a scan next time Windows starts-up. Turn that on and restart the PC and it will do the scan before anything else in Windows starts-up, so will probably find a couple more things too.

Sorry I can't be more specific on that second one, been a while since I've done it.

Well, thanks for your advice and I first tried the Spybot one you mentioned.

I did a scan and it came back with about 10 threats, 7 of them from Zango. I got rid of them and also did the whole Windows start-up scan you mentioned and nothing changed.

I also removed some weird Google toolbar thing for my browser that I don't remember downloading and again, nothing changed. :-\

If it's that text enhance shit, these steps can apparently remove it

Well that did help a bit.

I checked the list of names on that site that text enhance goes by and I found that I had two of them. I disabled one of them, but for some reason, I'm unable to disable the other one. :-\

All I get is this:

I can't seem to enable or disable it at all, for some reason.

Be cool, class.

Just disabling extentions was one of the fixes, did you check the others on the site? You can stop Flash having 3rd party storage, or you can manually remove all the files and registry entries.

The second option can be a bit of a ballache, but I'd recommend doing it to completely kill the stupid thing off.

Well, I've just disabled 3rd party storage with Flash and at the moment, that seems to have done the trick. :y:

I've checked the sites where ad banners were showing up before and also where linked text was appearing, and they all seem to be gone now.

So thanks alot for your help. It's greatly appreciated.

I was gonna ask what browser you used, but I think you mentioned Google and I assumed Chrome. I don't know what that has for Add-Ons, but Firefox has an ad-block thing that works amazingly well. Well, for me at least.

But yeah, looks like you got it fixed. Congrats, man
