10th Planet Jiu Jitsu

I've been doing some reading up on Eddie Bravo and 10th Planet, mainly due to Rogan, partly due to the little "feud" with Josh Barnett. Anyway, I've come to the following conclusion: Eddie Bravo is a fucking Carny as far as Jiu Jitsu goes.

I've seen the three main tenents of his system: the Rubber Guard, the Lockdown, and the Twister.

1. The Twister: This one was the one that caused the "feud" with Barnett. He claims to have invented the move, when in reality it is a Catch Wrestling move. Aka the Cobra Twist or the Guillotine.

2. The Lockdown: Not so much as the Twister, but from what I've seen, it's another Catch Wrestling move: the Scorpion Leglock. But, he "invented" it. yeah.

3. the Rubber Guard: From what I can tell, it's a decent move. I won't give it hell except for this: you need to be flexible to pull it off. Joe Rogan is allegedly very flexible and is a Bravo student. He's also talked about having two ACL surgeries. Coincidence? I think not.

Then, there's his fighting record: He beat Royler Gracie and lost to someone else. No World titles or anything else. Basically, he's milking one win for all its worth. More power to him, I guess.

In essence, Eddie Bravo is a carny who is using Catch Wrestling moves in Brazillian Jiu Jitsu. Far from the first to do it (Kimura, anyone?). And yet, he also insists on insulting Catch Wrestling.

I'll have more on it at a later time. Until then. Opinions?

I've read Eddie Bravo's Ju Jitsu training book..

He says that Joe Rogan could easily complete at 170lbs in the UFC..

Plus, Josh Barnett is a f'n douche..

As a fan, I'll admit that Barnett is a douche. But during their little "debate" as it were, Bravo was making the outrageous claims for the most part (showing utter ignorance towards Catch), while Barnett was speaking logically on the subject. The whole thing started after Shayna Bazler won that fight by Cobra Twist (aka Twister, aka Guillotine). Of course, Bravo claimed to have invented the hold, Barnett said basically "The Hell You Did."

That, and there's the Dark Planet Catch Wrestling website that Bravo put up before the 'debate.'

I would like to see James Wilks (CSW) vs Joe Rogan (10th Planet JJ). I would call Wilks by submission.

Well neither of them invented the twister/cobra twist because it is a move called the guillotine that has been used in regular wrestling for decades to pin the opponent.

Bravo's stuff is just like anyone else who is a who is successful by using "new" or unorthodox technique. Unless your him or possess very similar attributes to him, the techniques are not going to work for you.

Actually, Barnett NEVER claimed he invented the move. He said it dated back to Catch Wrestling, like you said. If I misrepresented that statement, I appologize.

Add that to my original post about how the Twister/Cobra Twist/Guillotine was based in Catch Wrestling. The Double Wristlock was a Catch Submission for Decades before Kimura snapped Helio Gracie's arm with it.

Barnett even said he thinks the Rubber Guard (the only move I WILL give Bravo credit for) is decent, but there's too many knee injuries for the Rubber Guard user for him to actually promote it.

My main beef with Bravo is his love of putting down something he has borrowed Liberally from.
